...or something. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Just got back from my CBT. Oh my.

The classroom bit wasn't too bad and didn't seem to be too long. When we got to actually sit on the bikes (mine was a Honda CG) I had the sudden thought that maybe I shouldn't be thinking about big bike DAS. It's was a little 125, it seemed mahooosive.

Anyway we did the car park bit with the cones, I do appear to have some clutch control issues that I do need to sort out so will actually go for a bit of extra training I think. I'm concerned that if I just practice I'll be learning/engraining bad habits. The trainer did mention that the bigger bikes are easier, but I really think I should fix the problem.

I also had another issue where I was covering the front brake and clutch - he said he wasn't sure how I was managing to ride like that but that it would be a pretty instant fail in a test because "you can't be in control of the bike like that". When we went out on the road, I wasn't really doing it at all.

After the car parky bit we split into 2 groups of 2. Our trainer took us out on some country roads to start with. I swear to you I was screaming in my helmet with joy as we swept around the corners. Probably a good job that it we didn't have 2-way radios (unidirectional). Very Happy We went through some villages - It was fantastic. We stopped at some shops for a chat about how we felt. When we took our helmets off both of us being trained had massive grins on our faces. We knew that what we just did was what it's all about. It was totally fscking amazing.

Then we did some 'about town' work - not as much fun, but kind of essential I know.

The trainer said we both had good road positioning and he was pleased with our life savers and observations. I did have some issues with finding neutral when we stopped, it seemed to take me ages to get it. Strangely, cancelling my indicators wasn't an issue. Got a tip from the trainer, basically said that when you change into 2nd and release the clutch just tap the button "You can't over cancel them"

The other student and I chatted for about half an hour after we got our certs. We both want to do big bike DAS, I think we might end up doing it at the same time. Both of us were pretty pumped but it was quite tiring 8am start, 3pm end.

I know I'm going to love this....

I do wish that ~25 years ago when I first got on a bike, the CBT had been around and forced on us. That way I wouldn't have just jumped on a bike with no training and I wouldn't have ended up being hit by a truck and not getting back on a bike for 25 years. 25 wasted years Crying or Very sad

Ok, I exaggerated a little. I see little bikes all over the place, they look tiny. This didn't look tiny. Very Happy

around 25 years ago, but I'd had no training at all. A mate explained what stuff did and then I used it for 2 months - max (was a long time ago now Wink ) before my incident. I've never been on one since. Until today. Very Happy

Today was just fantastic. It took a little while to get confidence but after a while it was fine.

Relax. You'll build your confidence as the day progresses. At the end, I'm betting you'll be chomping at the bit to book your CBT.

I honestly hope so! what's your plan now? are you going to get a 125 to potter about on? or wait ?

i'm ready for my theory and hazard perception, will do that once I have done my CBT.

I don't think i'll have my full licence this year though

Originally I was going to do big bike DAS which would allow me to ride any bike immediately. I'm now thinking about getting a 125 and getting a few months of practice first. I'm also considering a bit more tuition to iron out my rough edges and the issues I've had.

I did my theory first, only because I'm so old you didn't do that when I took my car test Wink - So it was like a test for me, to see if I should go further with the 'bike thing'.

There's no need to rush, your CBT will last 2 years as will your theory.

Take your time, relax and enjoy it. Trust me - it gets less frightening and more fun quickly. The only downside is that your jaw will ache from all the grinning you're about to do Very Happy

I guess the law's changed again. I passed my bike test in 1990 when there was no theory test. I finally did my car test in 2004 but because I already had a full bike license I didn't have to do the theory.

Maybe it's assumed someone with a full bike license is already awesome and doesn't need any silly theory test? Very Happy

Thanks, it was just so much fun. The guy who took us out on the road was pretty good, I could clearly see in my mirrors that he was riding close to the central white line to protect us a bit from any [s]nut jobs[/s] one in cages that might appear behind.

You thought about doing your DAS and just running a 125 for 6 months anyway?? Insurance would probably be hell of a lot cheaper, and then when/if you get bored of it you can upgrade when you want!

Good luck with it all though

I'm torn between doing DAS and not. I think I'm going to book a 4 hour lesson for next week (if I can) and then chat with the instructor and see what he thinks.

Did my CBT yesterday and was deemed not fit to go on the road for the last bit (I concurred completely - I'd have said 'no' if they'd asked me to go out anyway).

Still had a jolly good time, even though I was bricking it every time I was trying to stop and not quickly remembering how to =P It all feels so alien at the moment.
I'm really surprised at how much of me aches this morning, but probably shouldn't be, given that I'm a pasty office-rat. Dropped the bike once (while stationary) because my noodle limbs couldn't hold it once it went past the tipping point.

Going back Saturday for some one-on-one to see if I can persuade my brain and body to work together on the matter. Twitchy little 125, you shall not defeat me!

I did my CBT yesterday too. It was very frustrating. I couldnt get things to come together at first, and by dinnertime I was adamant I wasnt going out on the road, but after a coffee and a chat, I did, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I know I need a lot more practice and experience, but I still passed Smile I think I will get a 125 for a while and run around on that before going for DAS. I'm determined to do it - even if I am a girl...lol Very Happy

It's quite funny looking at you guys get this excited about 125s. Not knocking it, i was exactly the same, and grinned like an idiot all the time. But, just wait until you've finished your DAS, get on a big bike and really give it some beans. It's a whoooollleeee new world on this side Mr. Green

Speaking of which. I always thought it would be a good idea for local people to get together and help others out. For example, if there were any newbies in the Bournemouth area, i'd happily come say hello, let you have a poke around my bike, and even take you for a spin on the back. I know i'd have loved something like that when i was getting going over a year ago now.
