I went to book mod 2 yesterday and all of the available dates were over a month away, except one...
So I'm having a go at it tomorrow morning ____________________

You will still be able to do a restricted test,,but not on a 125,,they are making it a 395 or 400cc with the same restrictions as now with the 125,,just another way of the riding schools making money because you cant legally take a 400cc on the road by yourself so you have to have an instructor,,or as the other guys say,,das will still be the norm.. |

I'm going to pass my 125 test by January (well, that's the plan) but I'm just wondering that's all |
3rd Directive Licence Laws / Impending Licence Changes
1/ EU law would actually prohibit unsupervised L-Plating. ALL we have on that one is a policticians 'promice' (worth about as much as 'No New Taxes') that WE will have an 'exemption' and will be keeping it.
What THAT means could be no more than come January, any-one with a CBT cert can carry on riding until it runs out!
2/ As now, you can avoid repeat CBT by taking tests. There IS an A1 Licence group for 14.5bhp 125's 'only'.
CURRENTLY, its a redundant group, no one bothers with it as it only lets you ride what you can on L-Plates, and the 'tests' to get the group are exactly the same as testing for full A-Group, whether restricted on a 125 or unrestricted under DAS provisions.
Only 'thing' is the machine requirements are slacker and you don't have to have a 'full' 125cc bike....
As from Jan 2013 under 3rd Dir, STRICTLY this is the 'First' licence, and you ought NOT be able to ride ANYTHING until you have gained it, See 1/ contension over unsupervised L-Plating & 'Promice' to keep it.
Test requirements go up to whats currently in force for 'Restricted' licence, ie a full-fat 120-125cc machine. And you will have to pass the tests and hold the A1 entitlement for 2 years before you might 'upgrade' to an A2.....
Another polictians 'promice'; we MAY get an 'Upgrade by Training' scheme so you dont have to re-test, just do something 'like' a CBT course on a 400ish 45bhp bike.
Also 'speculation only' regarding whether there will be some form of 'direct access' to A2 for over 19's or even over 21's, taking the tests on a 45bhp bike, without doing the A1 first & waiting two years...
But yes, that 35bhp restriction will remain as long as you don't upgrade to full A via whatever scheme they put in place.
Many people BELIEVE that this will be the case... personally I dont!
Leaving it to the last minute to publish the parliamentary bill to be made into UK Law, I suspect that we will get a straight copy & past of 3rd Directive wording into what the MP's vote on, PROBABLY with some quick addendum, saying 'existing riders on CBT may continue riding until validity expires' or that CBT certs will continue to be issued until X date, and then unsupervised L-Plating permitted until X date two years after, then NO L-Plating.....
We REALLY dont have any answers; only questions.
SO... test on a 125 under 'Standard-Bike' rules before Jan you'll get Full A group licence with 33bhp power restriction that WILL REMAIN at 33bhp until the expiry of that restriction, when it will lapse to become a full, unrestricted A group licence.
Test under DAS you get full unrestricted A straight away.
Wait until after January......
You will be able to test on your 125 for a 125 'only' A1 licence... two years after passing that, you MAY be able to 'upgrade' via training to A2, and then two years after doing that MAY be able to upgrade by training to full unrestricted licence...
IF we get that; mayt be the only way to a full licence for younger riders, and MAY still be a lower cost way to a full licence, than a full DAS course.....
But DAS is retained, unfortunately by 3rd Directive, so we keep crash-course that makes MOST road-deaths, and if we keep the L-Plate laws, which provides biggest 'accident' rate in biking, letting no-nothing numpties loose barely knowing more than their indicator from their observation.....
The entire system will simply 'encourage' more people to stay in the unqualified, untrained danger-zone of unsuparvised L-Plating skewing the stats against them even more.....
And pushing more to wait it out and jump in the deep end via a crash-course to kill themselves, skewing stats that end as well! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Oh, I agree that it can't go on indefinitely, but let's not panic pre-emptively. |
That's about all we can say; we have seen nothing to date!
APART from the express wording of published EU 3rd Directive law, in which unsupervised L-Plating is actually prohibited!
I would say that THAT was more than 'suggestion' of a threat?!
All we have to suggest WE wont get it remains a politicians 'promice', which can be twisted many, many ways!
And with 3rd Directive deadline getting closer and closer, I really DO fear, that they will do as they did with the 1982 Learner-Laws, and steam-roller the bill through parliment with cursory debate, and PROBABLY on a hastily drafted white paper, that I really DO fear is likely to be a simple cut & paste job of the EU Directive!
As for 'Panicking'? Well, I'm-All-Right-Jack, thank-you very much; none of it will effect me, as I have my licence thank-you very much; but DO think its worth pointing out to newbies it COULD effect, quite significantly, who are maybe 'banking' on that politician's promise to be able to get to and from work or college, as a long-term transport solution! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
