Okay, so I've got a Suzi Intruder 125 which I bought privately for £700 in 2009 (see sig) and I was leafing through one of the bike mags the other week to see older and higher milage VL125s going for double this amount!!! (Blimey, this is old news, they've gone UP!!!)

So mine has only done nearly 8000miles, but I would expect a 12 year old 125 to be worth less than what I paid for it, not double!

Now, I'm not in the market for a bigger bike yet (still on the A2 licence for another 15 months) but is it me, or is the market a little screwed?

Andy

Agree with that.
My lad went to a dealer to see about trading in for when he has passed his test.
He is a bit naive but hopefully will learn.
Anyhow, dealer said he'd give him £500.
So he took that as gospel and when his mate said he'd give him £450 he was about to sell it.

Anyhow I was a bit miffed as I knew that couldn't be right.
Turns out (using WiseBuyer's Guide - there's also this site - priceanybike.com) that trade-in should be around £900.
However, buy private is £750 to £1100 and buy from dealer is around £1400.

So I can take from that dealers have a good mark-up/profit margin and they like to take advantage of 17 year olds.

Turns out now he may keep it for another year anyhow.

Thumbs Up

I would ignore that tbh. Wait till you try and sell it and see how the real world operates Sad

I recently sold my GZ125. It was 2006 with 20k miles. I paid £950 (probs too much) spent £500'ish and had all the receipts. Got rid of the bits of rust, re-painted the swing-arm. Was T&T and had full service on it and both tyres had 5mm+ tread on it. Needed nothing doing for a good 12months.

I started at £1100 and tried for weeks and weeks to sell it. I couldn't get big bike on road until this was sold. In the end I sold it about 6 weeks later for £750.

Not all dealers are bad.

I traded in my '99 GSXR for £1400.

Which was probably (maybe a little less) than I would of got it for privately.

Check this out:-

https://www.buysellmoto.com/layouts/index.php?view=5&mot_id=8224

At current exchange rates, and taking into account, import duty and carriage, this guy will make 1700 Euro profit, which equates to exactly 1000 Cyprus pounds, funnily enough! Rolling Eyes

EDIT
It's a 2011,FFS, I assumed it was new! Shocked

No, they aren't. I traded my busa for £5000 when they were going for between £5500 & £6000 privately. I also got the best part of £1000 selling all the extras (exhaust, rear sets etc.) so I did OK.

Obviously the more expensive the bike you are buying the more money you will be offered for trade in.

All that said, if you were to go into a dealer and try and sell them your bike for cash, I'm sure they would offer you peanuts.

Seems like you didnt do very well.
I had a GZ125 2005 with 16k miles, bought private for £630, spent around £150 on it, then sold it on private about 8 months later for £850, after i had had an off and grazed the exhaust.

Very Happy

That made me laugh.

Cos I liked it when I first saw it and the price was in the right ball park. Really happy with it but I've got to keep it cos I can't afford a bigger bike just yet.

I'm probably going for a tourer next, although it'll all depend on whether I can touch the floor. I'm a bit of a short arse (5' 6" with a 27" inside leg, getting trousers that fit is a bitch!) so the low size of a cruiser is handy for me.

Comfortable riding position, low seat height, pleasing lines, low down grunt, engine configuration, belt drive, exhaust tone, steering geometry....
