I'm currently subject to being buzzed by loads of awesome fighter jets and stuff. Most of which I recognise, but oddly there are some I don't... I figure they might be chinese and so on. My Aircraft nerddom has failed me.

Any idea what this is:

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8430/7495195128_0cd8770532.jpg

Or this is:

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7129/7495194738_ee5370a22b.jpg

This is a JF-17 Thunder, that looks remarkably like a cross between a F20 Tigershark and a F-18 Hornet...

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8432/7495194324_e213aac0b2.jpg

Can anyone out-nerd the plane nerd? (and try not to cheat by using Google etc! Wink )

They don't look the same, and they definitely are not F-4 Phantoms. The Phantom is a lot longer, has low delta wing with dihedral tips.

The top one appears to have no leading edge root extensions, and the tailpipes look different.

There are similarities though, as in the tailplane...

Still pretty sure they are the same plane, same armament same number on the side (01) same marking, (red star) same shape tail.

Are chinese planes allowed anywhere near our airspace? I wouldn't have though so.

Maybe they have finally got round to filming... https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1745960/

Off topic but I was surprised the Turkish plane that was recently shot down was a Phantom.
I thought being such and old airframe/design it would have been retired years ago.
Apparently revamped with modern electronics.

The harrier dated back to the 60's and we still use them. Phantom Was around in what late 50's? it's not surprising a country like turkey uses them.

Well duh if you're going to do a false flag attack and or provide a propaganda pretext to an invasion to scare the population into supporting YET another war 'on humanitarian reasons' Wink you're going to use something old and decrepid.

Not something brand new which costs 200 million quid. The blokes in China used an old 1960s plane to 'crash' with a US spy plane.

I thought we spent a shed load of money upgrading them.

Then sold them to the US Marine Corps for spares for pennies.

As Far as I'm aware the Navy haven't got any (well they have they are sitting in a warehouse in Yeovil. I thought the Army still flew them. Even the Yanks are replacing them.

Its a T-50. One of the Black Eagles display team who've been getting some serious biggups around the airshow circuit this summer.

These are my favourite plane, A10, that canon fire shells of depleted uranium the size of milk bottles at about 4000rpm.

It fucks tanks.

I've seen picture of ones that have landed missing half a wing with an engine gone too. Hardcore plane.[/list]

It does a pretty good job of fucking up the long term health of friendly soldiers and anything else that breathes in the DU dust, whether at the wreckage site or elsewhere if it's travelled on the wind or brought home with a dusty kit bag. 4.5 billion year half life, tremendous stuff. A great use for nuclear waste you'd otherwise have to spend millions on storing somewhere safe and far away.
