Is it a good idea for me to strap the laptop to the rear seat (in it's case obviously..) As long as it's strapped on well then I don't see any problems (unless crash or it rains Laughing)

Does anyone carry a laptop regularily?

I have mine in a backpack at the minute which is unsafe and uncomfortable.. I've ordered a laptop case and was hoping to just bungee it to the rear seat.

p.s. the R6 hates me Evil or Very Mad

I don't see it being any different to strapping anything else to the back seat.

Personally I carry mine in my tankbag cos it's the right shape.

i imagine if your riding an r6, at your level of skill your not going to drop your bike, i dont do it myslef, but dropping my bike and recking the laptop would be my only fear, other wise go for it.

Is this just for transportation, or is it going to be running?

That's good then Thumbs Up I was worried it could damage the laptop in some way or another... it doesn't fit in my usual 1 strap backpack or my tank bag (small tank bag Crying or Very sad) but I think I'll just strap the laptop case to rear seat with a plastic bag over it if it's raining.. pesky R6 doesn't have anywhere to clip the bungees too which is a pain in the arse but I'll get over it Laughing

They do some cases with airbags in them, we tested them and they came out a lot better than most other cases we tried.

I've bought my second laptop in two months (Business use and a crap insurance dealing, don't ask!) and this time I got a rucksack type laptop case, for the specific purpose that I can then use the bike for work when I'm out and about and carry the laptop with me.

Has a decent clip across the two straps to stop it from moving around and also has clips across the zip to stop it coming undone and falling out.

Haven't tested it yet mind. Rolling Eyes

I've got one of those as well. It's absolutely ideal. It carries the laptop along with plug, mousemat and mouse, and still has room for two lever arch files.

Cost me £3.50 on St Albans Market at a luggage stall - well worth it!

I've often strapped the laptop in its briefcase thingy to the back with a couple of bungees as well with no problems.

Just don't forget that your bags may not be waterproof, and that this is more likely to be a problem than dropping it.

Thumbs Up

I bought a rucksack from Halfords for a tenner. Nothing special, just a camping type daysack with two large compartments. One of the compartments is actually the exact size for my laptop, and behind it is the gel padding that is supposed to support the weight of whatever is in the bag. This gel padding keeps the latop nicely off of my back, and when the laptop is warm, it warms the gel.

Better than any heated clothing! Thumbs Up

I also put all of my papwerwork / bike mags etc in the other compartment and my PSU and mouse goes in the smaller compartment on the front. I've never had any trouble with it, and yeah so I wouldn't want to crash with it, but hopefully its held far enough away from me that it would not dig into me in a crash.

Plus, If I wanted I could start up Winamp, bung it on random, plug in my 'ear hook' type earphones and listen to some rock! Cool

I take my laptop to and from work regularly, use one of these either place it on the tank or by my side. Obviously using the shoulder strap provided.

Funny you mention this as I found yesterday a chap here where I work transports his laptop in a tank bag too. I imagine vibration is the killer, however most laptop bags have padding.

My laptop is 35x28x5cm and it's a heavy bastard. Like YamsR6 I carry mine in my back pack and it's extremely uncomfortable. Does anybody know if something that size will fit in their tank bag, so I know what bag to get?

I had a rucksack that has the airbags in it. I've carried that on the bike regularly, and have never had any problems. I have also dropped the bag with the laptop in it (not off the bike, but off a sack trolley whilst legging it through hospital corridors...) and the bag protected it really well. No damage done at all. Thumbs Up

The worst thing is trying to carry a violin... now THAT is unstable!

Step 1. Put laptop in some old sheets, and wrap it up.
Step 2. Put wrapped up laptop under your clothes i.e. on your belly/chest
Step 3. if youve got 1 piece leathers or zip up two piece then that should be ok. If not just get a belt and put it round belly, over your shirt, thus trapping laptop between belt and neck.
Step 4. Dont lie on tank when riding or this will crush/scratch/mark the laptop.

Very Happy Very Happy

I am "NOT ALLOWED" to carry a laptop, my courier firm will not allow it. Anyone wants a laptop despatched it has to be done in a smartcar or van. (only a few courier firms have that policy)

However when I was at quicksilver (crap company) I was forced to carry laptops, I always carried them in my artwork bag which was fine.

I've been told that the motherboard can get damaged when carried on a motorbike, I don't know if that's true, can anyone confirm that?

Well the PCMCIA port is ripped off the motherboard of my laptop... but that was from dropping it on the wireless card - (card was fine Laughing ).

and the case for it is falling apart - theres a big crack in it... but I think I did more damage to it while on a push bike (I had a slight accident involving sabotaged brakes whilst pushbiking into college).

Overall I don't think biking with it has done it any harm atall - other factors have.

This is a Dell Inspiron 2600 btw, few years old now but I'd happily buy a laptop from Dell when I leave college and have to give this one back (in millions of pieces, probably).

Bad Idea Yams,
Laptops whilst are portable are not a great ideas in cars let alone strapped on sportsbikes, its not the motherboard that goes its the hard drive, the vibrations will eventually clap it out, its ok for the occasional trip but i would not reccomend it regularly,
