been looking for this vid for a while, it's nice to see a CR500 being ridden flat out in every gear, without certain death or injury! Laughing

Yeah the spanking big sportsbike's bit was pretty cool!

The two things i've noticed though were firstly how scary is the sound is of a CR500 being revved right out? it just sounds wrong, like it does when you hear a Harley Davidson or a VW beetle being revved into the redzone lol!

Secondly is holding a 500cc MX 2stroke engine at full throttle at high speeds for fairly long periods abusing it or even likely to cause engine damage? Some of the comments were basically saying that the guy was killing the motor by riding it like that on a big long track.

I would assume in an MX event that the throttle would be wide open not for very long and not at all unless the rider was a fearless big hard bastard that was having a bad day!

On a dirt track, they go full throttle all the time, the difference is, that the rear wheel slippes on dirt and on the tarmac not, which makes it harder for the engine. I've seen few RS125 damaged because of the rider who went full throttle on highway and when he was about to exit it, he cuts off the throttle right away, which means lack of fuel going in and the engine isn't lubricated well although it still revs high.

Very cool, 2-stoke supermotos are rare (well above 125's), always nice to see/hear one.

Nice, like the way he used all the track plus a bit more, good on the brakes as well.

Aye, they don't look too quick do they. Be interesting to see how it would compare with similar standard riders...could still be quicker through many of the corners but not by anything like as much.

That CR500 has to be great at fast change of directions, but can it slow down from high speed as fast as a sports bike with 2x320mm disc with pair of multi piston callipers? I doubt it Cool

My YZF450 could out-brake most of my mates on sports bikes from it's top speed of 100mph.
Was running a single floating 320mm disc, with twin pot nisin caliper/racing pads.
Dont forget, it's only half the weight of a sports bike.

That CR500 looked insane. I always hear stories about how "mental" and fast they are.
But I dont think that looked a great deal faster than a modern 450f.

Heh, I totally forgot its top speed was only around 100 Embarassed , I've also heard some stories about enduros with street wheels and brakes that could go ,easily, over 120 on the tar. I also think, that modern 4 stroke would be faster than the CR500, at least on the road with street wheels. I might be wrong, but I think that single cylinder 500cc 2 stroke isn't really the best engine for riding like that guy who had a laugh at the track in the video.

The bars and more upright rider position are big helpers here, I used to had GPz, tall bike with bars way higher than the seat and it was easier to ride it than my CB1 and CB1 is definitely easier to ride than CBR900RR I've tried. I mean slow speed, maneuvering and quick change of direction.

Good example of what I mean is gymkhana, where you can see various bikes and each bike's got the same thing, handle bars way higher the the seat.

My 690 can do 120 with standard gearing Cool A lot of sumo's could it's just they are geared for tight tracks where acceleration is more important.

A big brembo or beringer set up on such a light bike will give you 1 finger stoppies no problem, especially when race spec sumo's are so light.

It's pretty well acepted and has been for years that a 450MX bike would be faster and better off road than a 500cc 2stroke.

On an SM track and especially the tighter ones the 450 should be much quicker too.

For top speed it depends on how they are geared, but with std engines id expect there not to be much in it. The 2stroke won't really overev and is all done before 6500rpm, so you need to gear it right, and getting tall enough gearing for 100mph+ seems to be difficult to find.

For drag racing and maybe beach racing the 500 should be quite alot faster than the 450's, but then i suppose a fair few 500's are tuned and im not so sure there is potential in a 450cc 4stroke for another 20bhp to be gained?

It does look to me that the CR500 in this vid is way ahead on braking performance too, and that it's limited gearing wise as expected on the straights.

What i would like to know is at what speed does say a 160bhp superbike weighing 170kg's start to really out accelerate a 60bhp 100kg bike?

I had a few standing starts with sports bikes on my YZF450.
Speed wise, the 450F was literally side by side with most of my mates sports bikes, until they clicked into second gear. Which is somewhere between 70mph and 100mph.
By this time, the 450F had already shifted up all 4 gears, and was nearing it's top speed of 100mph.

And of couse, second gear, the mid-range speed really starts to pick up on a supersports, and they just take off, leaving the YZF standing.
