Can't be too physically demanding, but something the kids would never forget would be good, so any ideas welcome

If they're a bit older and the whole family are reasonably adventurous then what about 'Go Ape' - high ropes courses found in various locations throughout Britain.

2 x 4 year olds and a 9 year old. Think the high rope things would be too much. I do like the sandcastle idea, something good would be the sort of thing that would trigger the memory randomly. Keep the ideas coming, I will try as many as I can and report back

oldest a girl, twins a mix. done the first football match,fishing etc. just want to keep a steady flow of things for them to look back on, think i will need to do them sooner rather than later. zoo trips and bird cebtre etc can fill in the gaps.

camping? though the weather isn't brill it'd be easy to make it something like comfortable.

I remember him leaving us when I was 10. It'd probably kill him to know that's my most vivid childhood memory though as we get on like best mates nowadays.

Other memories include catching my first (and only) fish, beach-casting on a wild and windy Western Shore, learning to play snooker and being so small I had to use a rest for every shot, helping to strip down various cars in the driveway and seeing a foal being born at around 2 in the morning.

lol at 22 you can do things yourself. camping is one i have overlooked, need to be in garden but it backs onto woods and plenty of wildlife, good shout, will build a wee campfire for that one.

Not overly similar - but this year I've started to carry a mini USB flash drive on my car / bike keys - each month I write a letter to my kids (currently 2 & 4 years old) and record little video's of random things like something I might be doing at work, or a short video of us at the park or something, so that if I'm ever in an accident or anything happens to me, my kids will always have something to remember me with and a bit of a letter / video for me to say good bye and tell them I love them, I don't have a great deal to leave them, I don't own a house and don't have any savings, but at least they'll know they mattered to me.

TBH, I don't think it needs to be anything spectacular or amazing, it's more about just having some time together.

Probably my fondest childhood memory is me, my brother and my Dad shooting a plastic heron to pieces with an air rifle in the back garden.

I was probably about 5 years old when we did this.

Maybe the 9 year old will be a little harder to entertain, but for the 4 year olds, it's really just being there for silly little things. My youngest 2 are simply pleased, they don't want big toys or flashy trips away - an afternoon in the local play park is all they ask for.

My memories of early childhood are prompted by a few photographs, so try to take plenty of pictures - particularly for the little ones' benefit.

I just spent a small fortune taking my kids to a theme park, and they probably had more fun playing in the paddling pool when we got back, so it is not necessarily about spunking loads of money on them.

If you back onto a wood, is there any option of rope swings or tree houses / gang huts? If you can spend time making the swing or building the hut with them, even if they are doing the work under your guidance, they will probably treasure that more than material things.

Mrs C has fond memories of making Christmas decorations with her mum. She suggested going to a ceramic experience type place and doing something similar. The beauty of a special Christmas decoration is that it will conjure that memory every year when the tree goes up.

My earliest and probably fondest memories with my Dad weren't crazy once in a lifetime deals or anything like that. We went fishing once which is where I learnt I don't like fishing but I still remember it to this day and it was about 22 years ago. We used to have a lot of BBQ's and he always used to wear this really horrible Hawaiian shirt and shorts combo that always used to make me laugh. He used to be a lorry driver and one day he took me out in his lorry which was amazing being 4 years old and driving around in a massive huge Scania tractor unit. I used to be nuts on trains too and my Dad would always traipse around various steam days and model railway exhibitions with me as a kid. For my fourth birthday my parents managed to get me on the footplate of The City Of Truro steam train for a small journey on an open day, it blew my mind as a kid and while my Mum managed to jump up on the footplate for the short journey with me, my Dad was waiting with a beaming smile when we got back to the station. Every Christmas my Dad would put on Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band as he used to really like the Beatles and I still always remember that when I hear any song from that album.

As soon as I was big enough to reach the pillion pegs on his motorbike he used to take me out on it most times he went out. He'd often say that he'd forget I was even there as I was so small and light (my Dad is a big guy). He'd do this thing where he'd tickle my knee every time we went over 100mph but I highly suspect we rarely got anywhere near that fast but as I couldn't see the clocks over his shoulder I didn't know any better. We also did a lot of bike rallies as I was nuts on bikes from a very young age. My Mum followed us in a car until she got her own bike license so that turned into more of a family thing as I got older.

We used to travel to a lot of folk festivals when I was a kid as my Mum used to be a traditional Welsh clog dancer (NOT a morris dancer ). These things were held quite often next to beaches or woods so when there was downtime after we'd pitched the tents we'd often go for walks on the beach or through the woods etc which was always fun.

I suppose my biggest most overriding memory of my Dad is that he was/is always just there. He gave up long distance lorry driving to watch me grow up as he missed my two older sisters growing up, obviously at the time I didn't appreciate the gravity of that gesture but I fully appreciate it now.

I'm lucky enough to still have both of my parents and they're still together. I still have some things I'd really like to do with my parents and my Dad especially before it's too late, I'm hoping to get at least one or two of those things crossed off this summer. The main one being I'd like to go on a motorbike ride with my Dad (but both on our own bikes!). I obviously have my bike but I need to find someone who will lend me a bike to use for the day, I have some photos planned for the day as well as I found that I have very few photos of my Dad and I together for some reason.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you probably don't need to do some grand gesture or mad once in a lifetime thing with your kids for them to remember you forever, I think just being there for them while you can be is the best thing you can do. My love of motorbikes was encouraged by my Dad so anything I do with motorbikes reminds me of my Dad. Every time I see a lorry I think of my Dad. Every time I see a steam train or a big model train set I think of my Dad. Every time I see anything to do with fishing I remember that time I went fishing with my Dad and fell asleep. Every time I see a horrible Hawaiian shirt I think of my Dad BBQing away.

This thread has got me thinking back to all of my childhood memories with my Dad and making me quite sad that I've moved away from home now I just hope I can be as good a Dad as mine has been when I eventually have kids.

My kids remember swimming in the loch between Aviemore and Cairngorm at an early age. Looks like Scotland is on your doorstep, ideal for 'controlled' wilderness camps, fishing, trawling through the rubbish on the Western seashores, wildlife watching. Even just a jolly out on the train makes for a fun day out at that age.
