They have known about stuff like this for years, also they have a white line paint that is grippy too, however it costs like 3p more per meter than the slippery stuff so they don't use it.

MAG have been actively campaigning for these for a couple of years with some success.

The arguement from the councils generally ended up as it was too expensive but a number of towns have taken the initative as part of traffic reduction improvements. Totnes was one of the last.

Saw these on TV the other day, one council is replacing all of them (probably over time rather than immediately). The benefit they were espousing was because they're not made of metal no-one's nicking em.

It's amazing how a financial pressure suddenly moves things forward no matter how hard the campaigning had been...

About time! they should of started this a long time ago, why the fuck did they event put metal drain covers on the road anyway.

Not sure if you're serious, but the simple answer is that plastics and composites did not exist in the 1800s when they were first installed.

So we can thank pikeys for forcing councils to install safer covers. I knew they had to have some purpose. Thumbs Up

yeah but think is, if the council laid PROPER roads then they'd have little reason to dig them up again to spend the left over budget!

(this being that each council is given X amount per year and if they spend for example, £1200 out of £1500 a year, the following year they'll only be given £1200 so they spend the extra buy digging up roads to keep thier budget)

Coming up out of Bridgetown towards Paignton is probably one of the worst stretches of bike-eating manhole covers that I've ever ridden
