Hi, I'm trying to get my head around the changes to he license in January and how they might affect me. I know this has been coverd in various posts and mikes very helpful website, but I'm still confused.

I'm 30 and will be doing my CBT on Sunday.

So below is my attempt to summarise.

Pre jan 2013

If I take my Full test on a 125cc then I can ride upto 33bhp for two years, then whatever I like.
If I take my full test on a 500cc then I can ride what I like now.
If I do a DAS course I can ride what I like as well?
A DAS course is a combination of recognised a recognised training structure with the tests for mod 1&2 at the end?

Post jan 2013 - if we are all still here Shocked

I have to take my test on a 125 wait 2 years.
then take another test on a 400cc, then wait two years
Then take my test on a 600cc and I have a full license.
I cannot go from CBT, straight to a 600cc test to get my full license?

I know this has been covered before but if someone could validate what I've said above that would be grand.

Thanks.

Currently, the minimum age to do DAS is 21, post January 2013 that changes to 24, so at 30 it won't affect you. You can just do DAS either now or next year and get a full license straight away.

Is DAS the only way to a full license straight away though?

Could I for example, practice on my 125 for 90% of the time, then take a few lessons on a 500cc bike and use that on the test? I've just read mikes website and I'm still confused by what DAS is.

YES....

But DAS is DSA test scheme NOT a course!

YES.

DAS courses are ONLY training, nothing more.

Its on the site!

What is 'DAS'?

DAS - 'Rules'

1/ you may take tests on DAS eligible 'big-bike'
2/ you may ride such 'big-bike' on L-Plates ahead of test, PROVIDED you are on a 'lesson' with DSA Approved DAS instructor.

Absolutely NO compunction to do a DAS course. LESS an 'Intensive' DAS course.

I have a CB750, Snowie if she had a car and car licence & the insurance on her car had 'any Vehicle with Owners Concent' extension.... I could pillion to the Test Centre, slap L-Plates on the 750, and stick her into test signing the waiver and if necessary showing her car insurance cert showing she is covered to ride the bike.

She would NOT have to have ANY training or practice before hand....

She need not even have ridden a sodding bike before!

Chances of passing are 'slim'... but thems the rules and the bit teh schools dont like you to know.

Tests are conducted by the DSA NOT teh School..... School may BOOK tests and take you to the test centre, but they dont conduct them, ultimately comes down to the DSA examiners and they dont care whether you have done a course or who's bike you are on, ONLY whether you can ride the bludy thing.

I did read that mike but I have a few questions questions

What is a DAS elegible big bike?

Can I train up on my 125, take a few lessons on a 500 with an instructor on L plates.
Get to the test centre, let's assume I use your method above (my dad has a full bike license). Stick L plates on and take the test.

At the moment it is a bike with more than about 45bhp - so pretty much any 500 or bigger.

This will change with the new license regs to be a bike of at least (I think - don't quote me on the exact numbers) 598cc and ~55bhp

Yes you can do the above but dont forget you will need to be insured on your dads bike as a learner for the day of the test!

my car insurance states "and any motor vehicle not belonging to the policy holder - third party only, with the owners consent, as long as he/she is not the registered owner and such motor vehicle has a valid insurance policy in force at the time of cover.

wouldnt that mean that if your declaring to your insurance that you are the only rider, then if XXX rides it, your insurance is then void? so...?

I never considered the fact of learning on a friends bike.... and taking the test on it using my car insurance policy...

Obviously the rule applies to "You bend it then you mend it"... so for £100 a day is it worth risking £XXX amount of damage if you do drop it?

Im going to look into my mod 1 and 2 round here... i believe they have a test centre in warwick. Im not certain though. But definately worth looking into. Smile
