making locks fit the key

Bit of a random (probably pointless too), post.

I paid about £15 for a petrol cap, seat lock and 2 helmet locks because they didn't have keys with them... so I've stripped all the locks down, switched the cylinders (I thought they were called sliders), around, sanded a couple... and now have a full set of locks working off 1 key Thumbs Up

Anyway, just wondered if anyone else has had to do this to cut down on more than 1 key?

There is an article in Practical Sportsbike about doing the very same thing...

Andy is the petrol cap the same type of barrel? I did my helmet and seat locks but did not want to take the cap apart to find out its different.

You sure you've not just buggered all 3 locks, so they will now open with anything? Even a screwdriver. Laughing

My R1 seat will open with any key, screwdriver, penny, anything that fits in the slot actually.
Not sure why though.

Good chance the pins inside are stuck. You may just be lucky/unlucky that the six of them are in the open position. Once you get the lock apart fixing them is easy.

If you know what you are doing then it is the same kind of barrel, just a bit more awkward to get at... that and there is springs and ballbearings that will drop out, so make sure you keep it close to the surface (and maybe put a cloth down to stop them bouncing and rolling away), petrol cap took me about an hour to strip and rebuild, seat lock about 25 minutes and about 10 minutes for the helmet locks

This is the closest I can find to what it looks like inside, and it shows how easy it is to get the lock to fit the key. I should point out that the only thing that holds the barrel in place is that pin that is sitting seperate, if you can get into the back of the lock with a thin screwdriver then you can push that in and take the whole barrel out

Yeah that is like mine also. My ignition was changed at some point for non standard Kawasaki and it does not fit the other locks. Someone changed the fuel cap for a old small Honda one. I got the other locks working from the Honda key but since found out i cant get one cut. Someone is sending me an old Kawasaki key so i need to change them all again. It was only the fuel cap that i was bothered about as i have never took one apart before. Ill look out for the ball bearing thanks.

sometimes you can buy kits that come with a whole array of the pins so you can build it to match your key without needed to grind anything down to fit.

or buying a few spares barrels and stealing the pins out of it.

i did this on a car boot lock before but the issue for me was that the back of the casing was pressed on so i had to make a tool the right shape that that would bend the edges around to seal it. It worked in the end but was a bit of a hassle but thats the only difficult bit.

Bodging! I love this sort of thing. Making something fit thats not supposed to.
I myself have done this very bodge -err -slight adjustment to locks.
Nice to know the art is still alive. Laughing
