As we are having the most wonderful weather at the moment, my textile jacket has decided it doesn't want to be waterproof anymore Sad so the question is, a new textile jacket to go with my trousers OR a waterproof one peice to go over my leathers. Both about the same price but which would be more beneficial? Anyone have any suggestions? thanks Smile

I'm currently using two piece waterproofs over the top of my textiles / jeans.
They're "HiGear" own brand from Go Outdoors - £20-£40 a set depending on what ones you go for

Have just started to have the same problem as the OP.

Was looking around on the net for some re-waterproofing spray the other day and came across that nikwax stuff. There are a few others out there too but, the nikwax seemed to get the best reviews. Be carefull though as to which one you buy, as some of them have to be heat treated onto your textiles.

I'll be giving it a go myself come payday.

+1 on the waterproofing spray.

What annoys me, is when people moan about their gear no longer being waterproof and think they need to buy some new gear as a result.

Nothing will stay waterproof forever, which is why they make waterproofing sprays; so you can maintain that waterproof-ability in certain clothing items.

I reckon I'll go for a 1 peice rain suit, as they tend to be less in the way than my bulky winter jacket and I wont sweat as much under it if its still warm, reckon I'll re-waterproof the jacket as well and see if that helps Smile

I'm not so sure! I bought a Hein Gericke Touareg jacket 10 years ago, ride all throughout the year and it is still as waterproof as the day I bought it. That being said, I don't like the look as it makes me look like an even fatter b@stard than I am already but I'll gladly look like a porker to stay dry and warm.

But I get your general point. I also have a Wolf jacket and I expect to treat it every now and again.

I have a pair of 100% waterproof breeks. See the bright yellow stuff the road diggers wear, think they are rubber based. I have had them for years. Fantastic stuff.

Last friday, i probably picked the worst day to ride upto Glasgow from Lincoln... Took me aaages because the weather was soo bad. By the time i got to scotch corner i was soaked through. Hein Gericke goretex jacket had held up well (but weighed a few tons) but the lidl bike trousers were aweful...

I think they had a hydrostatic head of about 5000mm where im pretty sure goretex is 20000mm Very Happy

I'd just like to vote against 1-piece waterproofs.

Firstly you need to get one that is about 3 sizes too big to enable you to get it on over armoured jacket & trousers.

Secondly they act like an air brake when you are riding.

Thirdly removal is difficult, especially under distressing circumstances. I used to regularly do a 2 hour journey, and at the end of this in cold weather I was desperate for a pee. It was often a very close run thing.

I'd vote for the walkers/workers waterproofs. Often cheaper than bike gear, and less tailored so easier to put on/get off.

If you are going to get two pice from the camping/walking shop you want breeks with high waists and long body top. To many people buy stuff the same lenth as a standard jacket and it rides up at the back when on the bike. Nothing worse than rain water running down your arse on a cold wet day.

Not that I am especially waterproof myself
(does that Nickwax waterproof normal jeans, then? cos if so, I'm up for buying some)

BUT ...

If you live in any kind of place where you are near a farm supply store, go in there and poke around.

While we were in NZ back in 2002, my ex bought a pair of rubberised farmers gloves, lined with sheepskin, and once they are tucked into the arms of [whatever jacket], they are awesomely waterproof. They're a bit loud (burnt seinna colour) but they do the job fantastically.

So if you are suitably rural: check out what the farmers are buying.
Ain't no season like lambing/calving season for getting out the waterproofiest things you own.

My Weise onesie that goes over my leathers WAS ok. Doesn't work very well any more - I would Nikwax it but it's now too small. It was fine on the Hornet but on my new bike im more hunched over; I don't have enough room to move now.

Jeans are about the worst thing in the wet. Anything cotton is. It soaks up water like a sponge, takes forever to dry, and acts like the best heatsink imaginable to freeze your bollocks off while it's slowly doing so.
