I have just had my aprilia rs 125 engine rebuilt as it blew on me. I need advice on how to run it in, ive been told to stick below 5k revs but it's hard to get going at that and pritty slow. I've been sticking below like 8k, 5.5k where possible is this ok or will it do it damage?

Mine has the same engine (Rotax 122).
All I did was to vary the revs up to 6k for the first 100 miles then gradually increase them after that. It's done 700 miles and hasn't blown up Wink

Was it a top end rebuild or a full one?

If it was a full one then you'll need to change the gearbox oil after about 200 miles.

I wouldn't worry so much with the revs, just keep a light load on the engine, don't let it labour up hills or leave it in a high gear etc.

Warm the bike up properly
Avoid full throttle and 'loading' the engine (like being in a high gear on a hill and giving it more gas instead of changing down).

Revs without load arnt much to worry about.

post fail. Thumbs Down

I'd rather have a reliable (Honda) bike that has been tested to 200,000 miles without fault, rather than a pathetic piece of pubecent italian 'exotica' that won't even last 5,000 miles! Laughing

Child Rolling Eyes

Id rather the RS125 than a cb500 that would 'last 200,000 miles'.

More fun, looks better, even smells better.

Said the guy riding a GSXR1000 Wink

p.s thanks for the random negative rating, much appreciated Laughing

Use cheap non synthetic 2 stroke to run it in.

It will be slow, its only 500 odd miles.

5k for 300 miles, 6k for the next 200 miles, increase revs above this distance until 1000 miles then go ragging.

Wave's the one giving it the 'big I am' for making that initial smug remark about a cb500.
All I was doing was replying to it; not boasting about riding a cb500 by any means.

Shouldn't it use fully synthetic?
I was given semi-synth for mine (before I knew better) and had nothing but trouble with it (and ended up needing to replace the big end bearing). I've since been told (and the manual agrees) that only fully-synth will do.
Having said that, it's my first bike so I'm still learning Smile

On an RS125

Due to its state of tune its advisable to only use fully synth 2T.

Not sure if you can get Castrol TTS anymore, but thats what everyone was using when i had mine in 2003

Fully synthetic oil is much better for an engine, except when running it in. Always supposed to use mineral oil for run in, plus it's cheaper.

I was very much expecting this thread to turn into a battle of hard break in vs traditional break in. Interesting that BCF seems to agree on traditional methods. (I'm personally on the fence after having been firmly traditional break in for most of my life.)

I don't think you can get TTS, but there is a newer equivalent.

If you can't appreciate a small capacity two stroke, then you're only after a two wheeled car, which means you've completely missed the awesomeness of motorcycling.

Halfrauds do the TTS, but it's csalled racing and is ina GOLD go faster bottle.

Opie oils do good prices, esp if you buy bulk / use forum discount, and or wait for FREE del - and their 15% off weekends.

I use rock oil, only caus it's supposed to good, my mechanic sells it, and he does it for about 11 quid. Thumbs Up

Marjay you're missing the point. That high maintenance, hot Italian thing may be a hot ride, and always gets your pulse racing, but she's always expensive, and can be so temperamental that you may be get getting no hot action for a while until you sweet talk her round with the best in TLC at the highest price. Then you should be OK again... for a while.

Compared to this, that dumpy far Eastern thing is not so hot or exciting, but she's cheap, asks for very little, always available for a ride and she'll love you long time without any drama whatsoever Wink

Disagree to a point, what you've said can and does happen with them, but if i of all spanners can keep one happy, at 150 psi at 8000 miles then others can.

Mines suits my needs, but would not like to use it for commuting for sure ..

In fact - i do about 40 miles a week est. Thumbs Up

Blimey that TTS replacement is £15.99 at halfords.

TTS used to cost me £10.50 Razz there 9 years ago.

Flashy unreliable Italian bikes have always been my favourite kind of bikes too.

I want another Duke Sad
