...If you knew you were about to be nabbed by the cops...
Just say for the sake of it, that I buggered off from the lights as fast as my wee bike would have it; looked over to the right side of the dual carriage and saw two officers looking at me from their car. Obviously being just over the speed limit....say I could see them getting ready to turn around,, would you see poll ____________________ **** Don't ride faster than your angel can fly Get this Free Space

I'm definitely not a runner, I'd pull in. They'll have your plate in a second anyway, so there's not much point making it worse for yourself. If, like you say they were just turing round, you could slow to the speed limit and probably just get a bollocking if they decided to pull you. Not worth running imo. |

Slam on the brakes! (having first checked your mirrors obviously) They may have been in the process of taking an average speed or trying to target you with a radar gun. The time to slow down is NOW and you might just get away with it.
This is what I failed to do when I saw a traffic car behind me on the motorway (I was doing comfortably into three figure speeds). I just backed off the throttle nice and subtle and got fined for doing 98.6mph, they were in the middle of measuring my average speed when I saw them.
Had I immediatley hit the brakes and slowed down to about 50mph, my average would have been down below the NSL and I would probably have got away with a bollocking and a producer. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. 1. they can't see your plate
2. even if they could it's too small to read
3. the traffic ahead is at a stand and you know you can filter through and be away in one of 6 directions in less than 15 seconds
4. the cops are in the middle of a queue and the middle reserve has a barrier they can't get over
5. your bike has no particularly descriptive markings it's black like most all older naked bikes
only a question.... the correct answer is to behave and be legal. but to be honest everyone at sometime has a choice and everyone at sometime does the less correct thing, don't they?
ps

Who in their right mind would pull over in the safest legal spot? I mean even if the police did turn around, they drive down the road and see you pulled over, you are admitting you've done something wrong. ____________________ Bikes owned: Aprilia RS 125 GP1 2003 (Now sold), Suzuki GSX-r600 1997 (streetfightered), https://www.bikepics.com/members/sychosis/

We had a young lad killed a few years back at the back of my house. He did a runner, lost it on a bend and hit a set of railings. The police only found him when they doubled back.
They were only going to tell him his back light was out.
I think the risks are too high on a bike. |

I'm just back from running away as I type this.
Was coming over a hill on the main road. Right over the hill is the turnoff into my estate. As I was coming over the hill doing naughty speeds there was a police van coming the other way. I looked in the mirror as I passed to see them slamming the brakes on but they were over the hill soon after and couldn't see me. I did have my indicators on so they probably seen I was turning in and it's a dead end down there. So I cancelled the indicators once they were out of sight and blasted forward. Right after the turn is a National Speed limit B road. So I nailed it down there. It was dark and foggy. You know that sort of fog where the full beam makes it worse. It was ruddy cold too. Turns out the police were at a crash with 2 cars down that road. I passed that on the way. Looked quite bad. Anyway I got away with it. ____________________ Honda NSR125R -> Suzuki GSXR400R GK76a -> Kawasaki ZX636 B1H -> Honda CBR400RR NC29 -> Nothing |

I feel like I am qualified to speak on this subject...
Back in 2000 I was riding my (then bike) GSXR400 on the road towards Grantham. I had been "making progress" past traffic all the way and hitting 120mph on occasion. Anyway, as I approached the brow of a hill I back off because, although I knew there were no nasty bends the other side, I was not 100% familiar with the road condition etc.
I crossed the brow and instantly saw a car parked up on the side of the road 200m further along. Not a police car, I thought and carried on... Mistake Number 1.
As I passed the car I noticed there were two people sat inside. Strange... So, I watched in my mirror and to my horror the thing turned into the road behind me...
Now, I didn't keep watching for long. My left foot stomped down two gears and my right hand wringed the throttle's neck. I hit 135mph and still didn't look in the mirror. My heart was banging like nothing I've ever felt!
Anyway, the road in question had long sweeping bends, long straights, little traffic and NO-WHERE TO TURN OFF! Dammit...!
So, I came round a corner and saw one of those poxy little signs pointing up a single track road. I'm doing upwards of a ton. I stamp on the brakes, the back wheel locks and I skid half into this corner - well more like just pointing up the road. I knock the bike into first gear...
...Just as a Police Senator comes screaming around the corner with its siren blaring and all the hidden lights flashing.
What do I do?
Nonchalantly knock it into neutral, flick the side stand down and admit defeat. The car pulls up alongside me as I climb off the bike and the driver gets out with a radar gun in his hand, showing me the speed before even speaking.
94mph. Given the circumstances, I'll take that!
He then asks if I'd seen him when I passed, "no", I replied.
"It just that", he starts "when you passed us you took off like a bat out of hell."
His exact words. Funny as fuck...
So, he does me for 94mph in a 60 zone, then notices my ever-so-slightly-illegal number plate. Break out the tape measure... yep, the digits are too small. Really officer? I thought this size was okay on a bike, I'll change it as soon as I get home etc. Funniest thing here was that he was looking at the plate, and below it was a massive flat spot on the back tyre where I'd locked up!
Anyway, I went to court, pleaded guilty. The policeman's statement said that I pulled over promptly and was curteous (thank you!). I got 6 points and a £350 fine. I later went back and measured the distance until I stopped... three and a half miles.
Thank you copper, you could have made it a lot worse |

I've had something similar happen to me a couple of times and I've just continued on my way. To be honest, I'm not the biggest criminal in the world and I try to ride fairly safely, so whatever I've done wouldn't be a major offence.
I have slowed or continued on my way at legal speeds however and kept an eye out, but seen nothing. I'm sure the Police have weighed up the odds and realized that there's not too much point from the other side of a carriageway and not bothered. If they'd have caught up with me and signalled an intent to pull over, then fair cop.
I would never do a runner when I knew it would have been a proper failing to stop, it's just not worth it. In fact I wouldn't even call it a runner, more like an oh shit, followed by an amble. |
