I was playing with this.

this is our car for Formula Student at Silverstone - thought I may as well make a thread about it!

we're running a 2004 FZ6 engine with bespoke exhaust and intake, running a Megasquirt 2 ECU (if anyone has any tips on tuning/mapping that'd be ace). I'm pretty sure the engine came out of a crashed bike from a breaker's so top of the list for me after the competitions are done is to give it a proper service!

then, this happened.
https://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/202251_10151932043885290_1255532010_o.jpg[/img]

we had to take the engine out saturday night to get to the starter clutch - the bolt holding the generator and starter clutch on had come loose as the engine backfired (spark timing map is way off) meaning the clutch didn't engage so didn't turn the engine over Evil or Very Mad to get to the generator cover meant we had to take the entire back end off the car - rear plate, exhaust, intake, manifold + all the electrics. when we put it back on an o-ring didn't go in between the intake and the throttle body, letting extra air in so the engine idled very high.

as the driver went round the tightest hairpin on the circuit that had been set up, he came off the brakes and the car accelerated suddenly (from the high idle) and it went into the tyres! the damage was bad enough to end our weekend, but fixable. the wishbones on the front right suspension need remaking and replacing, and our posh shiny carbon fibre nosecone got smooshed.

https://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l598/gazzam1/CIMG8926.jpg

and we're off to Hockenheim in 10 days for the German competition!

think so - they seem to do the job, we've got a few boxes of different springs kicking about which we can switch out though!

Few questions Very Happy

What Uni are you?

Also what made you chose the engine you did? Are you restricted to a 600?

I'm at Newcastle Uni. I'd be surprised if my lot got a working car this year. They are doing electric and were having difficulties balancing the batteries properly.

I hope by the time i'm in 3rd year I get into formula student and they use a bike engine.

i'm at cambridge, this is the first year we've got dynamic points!

the rules restrict the engines used to 610cc so most people go for a sports 600... i think we were running an r6 but it broke, so this was the cheapest one we could find as we don't have a lot of cash. apparently the aprilia one is really good as its light...

No personal experience with MS but I have seen that forum recommended before.

That looks a great thing to be involved with Thumbs Up Closest I got was the mileage marathon carts in high school... The head of technology hated that I knew more about tuning small engines than him (I had been playing with R/C aircraft from the age of 12)

First rule of racing; races are won in the workshop, be meticulous about your prep, don't forget those 'o' rings!

Also, as you have to rebuild the nose, talk to your sponsors (Boeing especially) about aero; best way that flat front is like pushing a brick, worst way it could generate lift.

Leed's changed their engine this year from an inline 4 to a single because of the restricted air intake. Your's looks pretty awesome. I've seen a couple of photos of the Leeds one but I wasn't really involved with it unfortunately.

That looks great. I've only been to the first meeting for our formula student team this year but I'm really looking forward to working on it. We don't have a working car so we've got a lot of work to do but hopefully we'll be able to race at Silverstone next year. Might see you there!

Not surprised you're struggling with the steering, the outside wheel is turning in more than the insde one from what I can see in the vid. Should be the other way round, as the inside wheel describes a tighter radius.

surely that only makes sense if he's going around only turning right or left but not both???? Would they not be equal?

No, if you're on a left turn the left wheel should turn more, a right turn the right wheel turns more.
