Okay, this may sound mad (and noobish), but I was riding about today, throttle wound right open (the only way to achieve 60 on the mighty (but ancient) CG) and I noticed my right arm getting more and more numb. It started in the hand but travelled up the arm slowly throughout the day, and seemed to happen quicker each time I started to ride again (i.e. after stopping for a drink or whatever).

I've looked into what it could be, and arm pump came up. Can you get arm pump riding on the roads? I thought it was only really in racing, due to the constant speed changes etc.

It could be im gripping too hard of course.

It could also be that I'm unused to riding without a backpack - could it be that Ive adapted my position to compensate for the weight of the backpack, so riding without it I'm putting too much stress on my wrist?

Basically, arms going numb when riding (even for short periods). anyone have any ideas what could be causing it?

cheers,

db

Backpack could be too tight, throttling the blood at your shoulder?

I remember years ago it happening on me, but only once.

Wide Open Throttle.

Could also be something as simple as your clothing being too tight in your armpit. I sometimes get this if I put on one jumper too many. Rucksack strap doing similar is a good bet.

If you MUST wear a rucksack on the bike (and therefore garaunteeing you slide face-down if you fall off). I'd suggest using the type with a waist strap. Do this up tight so the weight is sitting on your hips rather than hanging off your arms. Or slacken them right off so the weight is on the pillion seat.

Could also be vibration in which case altering the weight of the bars by changing the end-weights (if fitted) or by filling them with sand or similar can alter the resonant frequency.

Definitely get one with a strap.

I was going down the motorway once and stretched my arms, the backpack came off my back but luckily my arms were angled and caught the straps so I didn't lose the bag. Not made that mistake again. Embarassed

I also did a lot of commuting with a laptop in a rucksack for college which was (the bag above) slackened off so that it rested on the pillion seat. Barely knew the bag was there. Smile

You could try some bar end weights to stop the vibey bars as well.

Agree with the other comments on tight clothing and rucksac.

If cannot bungie 'sac to pillion maybe for long runs with a constant throttle setting a crampbuster throttle control may help? Can transfer it to a bigger/another bike if and when required.

Ballpark price £7.
You can get that thin one or a wider one.

When not required you just turn it around the throttle so it hangs down out of the way (close throttle) and then use throttle normally.

Probably just a combination of too tight a grip on the throttle combined with the high frequency vibrations through the handle bars, try relaxing your grip a bit.
