I had my eyes tested just before Christmas, was prescribed reading glasses. I have an office job and spend hours looking at paperwork and computer screens. Lately my eyes are very tired, one more than the other, despite the reading glasses.

Could I need new glasses already? Question

don't need them otherwise (yet)

Rule of thumb is, every 2 years for an eye test ( depending on age! ), I have read that if you look at computers all day, it is best practice to focus on something away from the computer for a few minutes, regularly, to give your eyes a rest!!

Last time I thought that, I went and had them tested and there was no change - I was just tired and working a lot.

If you're worried, go for a test - if you work at a computer screen enough your work will pay for the test.

I get a reminder every 2 years, but as already mentioned, if you have a concern, go and get them checked again
My works pays for tests and basic glasses assuming they're for work purposes...

What time frame did your optician give you?

Although if you feel that you are finding it hard to read. Go to a diffrent optician.
Did you get your last test paid by work ? If not get them to pay for this one.

You only get one pair of eye's so play safe. Thumbs Up

As you're on computer screens and reading for long periods of times, I'd suggest putting the computer screen further away from your eyes, and the paper, it helps them by not being so close to things. And try and keep your eyes outside in the open for at least an hour, this stops eye strain, works a charm for me.

I'm short sighted, and trust me, the opticians will absolutely pull your pants down on glasses, as you need anti-glare and sun glasses, or at night you can't see nothing when driving/riding. And the sun is annoying with glasses, as it reflects on them more.

I have my bad eyesight due to genetics, but I'm sure you won't go short sighted until you're old.

Mind you, my mums had reading glasses for about five years and now she's dependant on them, due to her eyes deteriorating, and the next one was -1. So technically she's short sighted now.

At my last opticians appointment I was told about the 20:20:20 rule. Essentially because I spend all day every day working with computers and things which are up close to me, I was struggling to see further away objects as they were a blur until my eyes had rested enough to focus.

I was told that the muscle behind my eye had become really strong from all of the up-close work that I do, meaning that it takes longer to relax to view a further away object.

For me the optician said that all she could do was provide glasses to help my eyes relax whilst I'm working up-close and then I take them off to look far away and everything should be fine. I got recommended bifocals at 18. One part clear and one part for using up-close. Embarassed

The other option was to give the 20:20:20 rule a shot. Essentially the 20:20:20 rule is:
- 20 minutes doing whatever you're doing up close
- After 20 minutes, take a 20 second break
- For this 20 second break, look at something 20 meters away or more (the sky is a good one).

That does work for me and help my eyes feel a little less tired. Also a good nights sleep really helps. I don't know if it relates, but my visual problems started when I was sleeping rubbish and feeling tired all of the time.

Edit: You would also be surprised at how much good lighting can help your eyes. Poor lighting strains them; so avoid sitting in front of the computer for hours in a dark room with your monitor on full brightness, etc.

I started wearing reading glasses about two years ago, my eyes went down hill very quickly once I started wearing them.

Are they bad for your eyes then? I started wearing them occasionally lately for close-up stuff* as i found i've started to go a bit boss-eyed when looking at teeny small things.

*i have to perch them on the end of my nose to peer at my knitting to count the stitches. I'm such a sex-goddess Rolling Eyes

I think it is more that my eyes have become used to the glasses and so have become lazy. I also forget to take them off and so my eyes are using them to see things that I don't need glasses for.
I should really only use them for when I have tired eyes, but it just gets to be a habit to wear them.

have you been to the opticians to get a proper pair as reading glasses are kind of self-prescribing. Might be worth getting a proper test done and a pair that suit your eyes exactly may be better.

It's been a long, question-filled day which may have contributed to that conjuring up an image of someone with two lazy-eyes. . .who consequently wears two of those lazy-eye-patch things doctors torment children with.

i'm tittering, sorry Wink

THanks for posting that. I have had some problems focussing on targets when doing archery, but it seems to go away on holidays (when im not at college and staring at a screen all day). That must be why.
