Hi eveyone,

Passed theory on Friday and just booked my mod 1 for Wednesday. I'm taking it on my own 125, as for now I'm happy just being able to lose the L plates.

I thought I might as well give it a go for the sake of £15.50.

I've had a go at doing some figure of eights at the local industrial estate, using CDs as markers and U turns I should be fine with.

Anything else anyone can think of that'll be worth practising? Looking at the youtube videos of the test is doesn't look too bad, but I don't want to be complacent.

It's just the emergency stop and swerve I'm bothered about, reading posts on other forums. Maybe I'm just overthinking it.

Cheers

Dave

Exactly the same as what I'm doing Smile
I've been making the gaps smaller between the cones for the slalom etc just to push myself a bit Wink
The only bits I don't have the space to practice are the e-stop, swerve & controlled stop...although...there are some new roads built at an industrial estate nearby and are pretty much unused, so I may use this part to practice those bits...

It's not ideal but better than nothing Smile

Mod 1 slalom cones are set @ 4.5m/14ft.7".
First f8 cone is set @ same distance from final slalom cone, 2nd f8 cone is set @6m/19ft+.

The space appears huge when you're actually on the MMA.

When I practiced that element for my test I placed aerosol cans @ 12 & 15ft apart.
Once you've sussed that out it's really quite easy on test.
Just keep few revs on, slip clutch & use back brake IF you need to, far easier if you don't as shows examiner you have full control.

Just remember that you are expected to act throughout test as if you are on a public highway & therefore mirrors & lifesavers are a must - it is quite easy to quickly fail if you forget them a few times!

The best advice I got was off here , so I'll pass it on in the hope it'll work for you too.

*Don't overthink about it*

Once that gate closes the nerves will go & just listen to each instruction given - ask him/her to repeat if not certain.

The best of luck, let us know how you get on matey Thumbs Up

Treat each manoeuvre as a separate exercise, deep breath, concentrate, once it's done forget it ever happened and on with the next one. Don't fret about whether you cocked up the last exercise!

The slalom can seem a bit off-putting as the cones look very close together when viewed end on, so when you get to the test centre take a good long look at them sideways on and remind yourself how far apart they actually are.

Figure eight - don't try and keep count of how many you've done, the examiner will tell you when to stop.

Swerve - as you approach the speed trap position the bike towards the cone nearest to the centre of the test area, this gives the best line. The instant you pass the trap dump the throttle as this buys you time to make the swerve.

Overall take as much time as you need - it's NOT a race!

Too true, many people rush it, when you actually have 22 minutes to complete it.
People rarely take much more than 10 - I got 1 minor for em stop as been a pillock I eased off too much into approach bend, looked down at speedo & whammy! lost my line & speed Embarassed

Even after getting it right on 2nd attempt I doubt I was actually out there 10 .

Cheers for the advise. I'll take a drive up to the test centre tomorrow, see if I can watch other people taking theirs.

I've been trying figure of eights with rougly 3m gap between markers, then setting them at 4m apart. it's getting alot easier.

I just hope it isn't pissing it down Wednesday morning!

Just remember NOT to look at the cones, but the space between them - as a rule of thumb, you will go where you look. Wink

And re; f8's, remember that you ARE allowed to go around the last yellow cone doing this exercise if you wish to - can be a useful thing. You could in effect use as much of the available area you wish on f8, there is no limit to width you have to pass around cones.

** don't overthink it ** it really will fly by once that gate closes behind you.

Nearly passed! 0 minors. Got 50 through the speed trap for the swerve and 57 for the E stop, but locked the back end up and skidded about 10 metres. Oops.

Gonna try and book it for a couple of weeks' time. Should hopefully get it next go!

Bummer. I locked up the rear on the first 2 practice runs I did when my training blokey had booked the test centre, after that I just covered the rear brake (moved my foot so it looked like I was doing something), front brake and engine braking are plenty to stop you in time.

I'm gonna practice a few times before, try and only cover the back brake until I've slowed right down.

It didn't help that it had been raining all morning. The surface was quite slippy.

Just rest your foot on the brake pedal, whatever you do don't use it!!!
Front brake does it all. Test centre tarmac is incredibly grippy, so a nose-diving front tyre will stick like glue, a back tyre with almost no weight on it (relatively) will lock up very easily.
