Hi,

Got a couple of problems with my XR that I have decided to try and iron out to A) Make it a bit more useful

And B) Sell it later on knowing it's going to be ok!

The problems are

- The first part of my exhaust that comes out of the engine block has just cracked:

https://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o520/bikerrtomm/240720122010.jpg

https://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o520/bikerrtomm/240720122014.jpg

I'm really not sure on what to do about this. It sounds rather anti-social and I haven't ridden it since.

Has anything like this happened to you?

Don't know if it's bodge-able or not, can't find any new pipes for sale either!

The second slight issue is the starter motor.

Sometimes I get a 'click' noise which I believe to be the brushes are stuck. So I tap it with a hammer and it works every single time.

I've been told just taking it off and cleaning it might work, or replacing the brushes.

Any info on this would be great, like what cloth to use and what to actually clean it with!

Thanks in advance! Thumbs Up Karma

The zorst might be savageable if the end can be cut off and a bit of pipe welded onto it.

I hope you've taken the flange off to show the damage rather than riding around with it hanging loose!

If its all rusted to buggery you might consider buying a new one.

New brushes will fix your starter issue.

Hey Tomm

This guy is breaking an xr, maybe he'll part with the manifold pipe?

Ah nice one!

It looks fairly rusty in the pictures, but if it's cheap it's a winner, I've just messaged them.

I also know someone who can weld, I'll see how much this pipe will cost.

Thumbs Up

Get the pipe welded, and take the pipe off and spray it with black heat paint, I assume you could do something to remove the rust, but my exhaust went like this, and I had no choice but to buy a new one, as it was that crispy rust that falls off when you poke it. If yours comes off crispy when you poke it, you'll need a new exhaust, or it's an MOT failure.

I don't think the exhaust can be welded due to too much rust.

'Waffles' of here has just pointed me in the right direction and possibly found be a bargain replacement part.

I understand the 'Gasket' is the bit the exhaust sits in..

Is this going to be a pain in the arse to get out as it's rusted a bit.. is it threaded? Shocked

Cheers

Tom

Your exhaust does look like it is currently being held together with magic! The gasket should fall out with the downpipe, if not grab a little screwdriver and flip it out gently.

Do you have a Haynes manual or something similar? They aren't particularly great but the pictures are reasonably clear and it gives you some explanation of what to do.

Haha, that's good to hear - for some reason I thought it would be a royal one to get out! I'll have a look soon.

No I don't.. haynes manuals don't exist for this bike :'(

But I've found a rare as fook service manual in PDF format so I'll see what that says!

Also just managed to get a part worn rear tyre for £17 (Pirelli MT 60)

He said it has roughly 5mm tread left and in good condition so that's on the way.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Waffles, you were right indeed Thumbs Up

https://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o520/bikerrtomm/050820122117.jpg

It literally just fell out lol.

Managed to get the downpipe bit off, so now my replacement pipe when I eventually get it should just go on the way I got it off!

The main thing I don't know about is the 'gasket' business Thinking

I did not see any rings like that one linked above, just the bit in the picture I posted. I'm guessing I'll need a new one of them because the exhaust is rusted inside that one. Any idea what that part is called haha?

Also, here's a peek into my hole!

https://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o520/bikerrtomm/050820122120.jpg

Wink

Nice bike that!! Very Happy

a new shiny exhaust will look great on that!

I wouldnt bother welding it to be honest,a new one will only help when you sell it on as it will look nice and clean like the bike..

trust me your looking at a bloke that has used baked bean tins to fix exhausts in the past! and ive even had jobs done just like that split!

And they have been welded really well!(but id always consider it a tempory fix)

Thats not a gasket, did that come off of the engine end of the downpipe?

Here is the diagram with part numbers, the gasket is p/n PFKL385328 or number 1 on that diagram, should be a copper ring rather than a tube.....

Snap Razz

https://img707.imageshack.us/img707/9236/img1788.png

The standard exhausts on these bikes are notoriously bad!

They don't last too long and eventually rust through or break at the header.

You may find you might have some rust forming on the end can underneath the seat side.

With a new downpipe, yes will fix for now but really, if you can find one, get an arrow exhaust or similar which is much better quality and also sounds pretty good Cool

Well, finally got the thing through the post about 2 minutes ago!

That second hand exhasut on ebay went for £65 Shocked

So I thought fuck that and brought new, coming in at £88 including delivery with a gasket!

https://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o520/bikerrtomm/00003.jpg

https://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o520/bikerrtomm/00002.jpg

Now the main thing I am confused with is WTF is the gasket and what does it do and where do I put it LOL!

I want to get out on the bike tonight so am going to do this after 5pm.

From the above pictures, should fitting this be a piece of piss? Could anyone just quickly let me know the order to do it, where this gasket sits? Karma

Cheers
Tom Thumbs Up

The copper coloured gasket fits into the exhaust port recess first. Then offer up the new exhaust and put the clamp plate over the studs attached in the cylinder head.Put the end section/silencer pipe onto the end of the new downpipe and mount onto the sub-frame loosely.Once everything is in place, start to do up the mounting bolts and nuts.Smear some copaslip onto any threaded parts.Make sure that the new downpipe is not under any stress. You should not need to bend anything to get it to fit properly.

Once everything has been tightened down go ride and enjoy yourself Thumbs Up

Thanks very much mate!

Just to clarify, the copper bit should sit in here first..?

https://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o520/bikerrtomm/050820122120.jpg

And then push the exhaust up and do the rest?

Cheers! Thumbs Up

Well, fuck my life once more... It's a lovely sunny evening and Ive come in from the garden to rant Thumbs Up

Basically, there is what looks like a gasket already in the engine block. It's not coming out, so I'm going to put the exhaust in and see if it seals ok.

If not, ill worry about that later.

Where it fits into the end can is pissing me right off.

It gets about 2 cm in and no more.

Yet the old one just slides in and out with a tiny bit of wriggling about. I've tried all sorts for about an hour now Twisted Evil

What the actual fuck, why is nothing easy!!

I've tried putting the old one in and moving it up down left right ect but does'nt seem to be helping. Can I put grease all over the fucker?

Cheers

A fucked off tom!

Thumbs Up
