Hi,

Just heard on the news a town in northhampton is planning to fence off a canal after a 2 year old child fell in and died.
I dont want to sound harsh, but surely the problem lies with the mother/father/carer rather than a lack of fence?

BBC news:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-northamptonshire-19048362

Quote:
Northamptonshire Police are working with the family to establish the circumstances leading up to the death.

This sounds like they were not watching or looking after him. I know you cant watch them every second, but if you live near an open canal, you wouldnt let them piss around near it?

If, rather than falling into the canal he had wandered onto a main road, would the parents be calling for a fence to be erected around all the british roads.
Blaming everyone except themselves.
Opinions?

The canal is not directly outside any of the semi detached houses in West Cotton Close, it's at least 50m away behind some flats. Who lets a 2 year old play unattended outside the house?

Woodford lock is about 25 miles north east of Northampton, and is part of the Nene, not the Grand Union Canal.

Got to agree with martay.

They are turning the public into unthinking mongs that just stumble through life without having to think or do anything for themselves.

If a major disaster happened to this country at least half the population would be in the shit without the slightest clue in how to o anything to save themselves.

Ban football, that would have stopped the child wondering off and drowning.

It's all right, he's got at least 3 others left, that he knows about.

Personally I think they should ban canals.

Why? So you can blame them for not stopping him?

As a parent of a two year old myself, I can tell you that even when he is safe from wandering off in the house/garden I still check that he's okay. We took a holiday last year in Ireland, the cottage had its own marina and a boat. We never left the door open for him to wander out and never took our eyes off our lad because it only takes a couple of seconds for them to fall in a drown.

If the council does fence off the canal I'll bet the kids' parents try and sue them as fencing it off could be interpreted as an admission of responsibility.

I'm amazed the child made it to 2 years old. What kind of brain-dead 'tard takes their eyes off a 2-year old for 5 minutes. 5 seconds is too long, 5 minutes is a fecking eternity.

Poor little fella Sad

Probably has more to do with the council avoiding future liability, than the safety of the public

anyway, RIP little one

When a toddler drowns there is no noise, splashing or fuss. They just slip under the water and sink.

I read of an incident where a mother was sat in a chair by a swimming pool. She wasn't paying attention for a short while, turned round and couldn't see her child. She stood up and he was in the pool under the water just a few feet from her. Luckily she got to him in time. No noise, no fuss.

Really scary stuff.

I have three children and a grandchild that we took swimming before they could walk. Believe me they know how to splash about without any training.

So you've let toddlers go in water deep enough that they cant touch the bottom with their head above the water? You think that if you took a toddler into a main swimming pool and let them walk off the edge that they have an inbuilt ability to stay afloat?

I have two children, both go swimming on a regular basis, neither have displayed an instinctive ability to swim and I would expect that when they were/are (my sons 2) ~ 30+ months old that both would go straight under. I don't know this from personal experience because, unsurprisingly, I haven't tried it.

Either way its a commonly reported fact from people whose children have drowned or nearly drowned that very young children sink quickly and quietly. If you believe otherwise with a false sense of security that you'll be alerted by a load of splashing and noise should the worst happen then so be it.

Do a search for child drowning on Google. The two words that are repeated over and over are "quiet"and "quick".

"Children drown without a sound. Drowning is a quiet event. There is no splashing, no screaming, and no noise at all."

From here but the warning is the same where ever you look:

I doubt they will fence it off, there will be a legal requirement to allow access so a horse can tow a barge or something.
Also the long term maintenance would be ridiculous.

This version of the story only mentions the father suggesting it.
