After my last accident where the driver of the car couldn't be tracked because I had no registration number, I've been wondering about the feasibility of an accident recorder on the bike, similar to 'black box' recorders for cars which detect the force of a crash or harsh braking.

The closest thing I've found so far is this which looks like a lot of money for what is basically a constant 'loop' recorder, I was wondering if anyone on here has any experience with these or has a system of their own?

We're looking for ones that record on a loop though, so you're more likely to have the footage from the crash. Do you know of any cheapos that do that?

I have a couple of these:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130567528780

Once the memory card is full it starts overwriting the oldest file, so it gives me loop recording. (I have one for the back and one for the front, although I've become a bit lazy and only have the front one fitted nowadays)
It time/date stamps the footage too.
The only maintenance it needs is charging, the battery is easily good enough for my trip to & from work (up to 3 hours in total) but does require daily charging. You could hook it up to a 5v USB charger I guess and leave it permanently installed, but for me it's easier just taking it with me when I park up.
Whatever you go for, make sure you get widescreen - mine is 120degree which is perfect, normal cameras are crap for this sort of onboard footage (viewing area is far too small)

'Accident recorder' sounds too much like 'speed recorder'

Get a 808#16
25 quid, it records in 720p and it supports loop recording.
I use one on my helmet for my daily commute.
The battery doesn't last long, but if the whole purpose is to use it on the bike, you can get a 12 to 5v adapter and use that as power.

The main reason I got it was due the loop recording, it is nice to forget about it and only look at the memory card when you need it.
It records in 5 minutes segments (280mgs) and when the card is full it just deletes the oldest one.

Have a look here:

Looked at a few sample videos of that 808#16 and it looks brilliant, especially for the price. I've been looking for a continuous recording camera too but never found one. My only concern is buying a fake one though. On that website you linked there is a notice about fake ones being on ebay, do you know a genuine seller, Fbyte?

Nevermind, found a genuine seller. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-DVR-808-16-V2-Lens-D-Car-Key-Chain-Micro-Camera-HD-720P-Pocket-Camcorder/180942453605?ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1&ih=008&category=88754&cmd=ViewItem

yep, that's the one I used.

Looks like they upgrade the version, now you have 3 lens, A, B and D
(D is 120 degrees)

Maybe I will get another one 8)

I removed the case and battery for the one I use on the helmet and put a 1200ma phone battery. It last for around 3 hours which is enough for me 8)

These 808#16 are quite good, you can configure a lot of stuff, remove the timestamp, video size and other cool stuff.

I'm going to order the D lens. I used one of those cheapo MD80 cameras that I got for about £10-£15 which did its job but the quality wasn't really good enough. This seems like very good camera quality for a very good price in comparison to the likes of GoPros.

EDIT: That seller doesn't ship to the UK Confused.

I also used to have a MD80 (original metal one) and the quality on this ones is far superior.
These are a lot smaller (flat body) which fits nice on the helmet, and they are really strong. I've solder/desolder some of the stuff on the PCB and is still strong. Not the typical Chinese crap 8).

The only thing I miss is to have an option to start recording when they get power. Someone in that forum did a small circuit to do that but it needs a pic programmer which is a little too much effort Smile
I can start/stop recording with just one button (which I can even push with my tongue Smile ) so it's ok for me and well worth the 25 quid

It does.

I bought 3 from them in the last month.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180776698380?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

I think he removed the UK country due the Olympics, but he should send it, even if it take longer than usual (2~3 weeks)

Contact the seller, I'm sure he will do it.

EDIT:

Check this link:

Maybe they have a different ebay seller for UK
that one does appear to sell to UK and it is the same name/camera

Bought it from another seller for $43.99. Trusted seller on ebay got thousands of good feedback so hopefully will be alright. Got plenty of time to make a dispute if it's not anyway.

Very Happy

Good. Hope is a "real" one (who knows who copied who)
I think only the #16 have the loop recording option.

Camera arrived in the post today, it certainly looks like what it should do and has come with all the correct leads etc. I need to charge it up and I would test it out tonight but I've got to go to work soon so I won't be able to. I will post a video up when I test it out.

could this be wired to record constantly or when the ignition is on WITHOUT pressing any buttons to start the recording?

the power pulled by it shouldn't drain a car battery so leaving it turned on 24x7 shouldn't be a problem

I have no idea. It's not very difficult to press 2 buttons every time you get on the bike.

It does work with any 5v, so you can leave it connected all the time and it will recharge and record at the same time, but it needs one click to get it to start recording.

Someone in the RC forums did a small circuit to simulate a button press when it receives power but it needs a pic and a programmer

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=20603738&postcount=2095

BTW, with the latest firmware, you have to press just the power, it will start recording after that.
