You can do a burnout on pretty much anything.

Hold the frontr brake (tightly - this is important!) and ease the throttle and clutch to biting point. At this stage you'll feel the bike try and pull forward, but dip due to the front brake being applied. Now increase the throttle and with enough input the back wheel will spin. If you get really confident, get the gearbox into top and max it out.. Cool

Nah, the ideal time to do it is just before you change the tyre. Or, do it on grass which doesn't hammer the tyre as much (or cover everyone in smoke!) but it does burn the grass!

Shouldn't that read "Someone has a clutch to burn."? Laughing

Remember that if you do a prolonged burnout the whole back end of your bike will be covered in molten rubber and bits of tyre belting. This gets in your brake calipers, chain and rear suspension and can stop them working. Even if it doesn't, it is a total pig to clean off.

If you are just doing it for a film, pour a little diesel or oil on the bit of road you are wanting to do it on (obviously not somewhere a car or bike is going to go) and it will spin-up a beauty with less tyre wear and clouds of smoke.

Remember to wash the tyre off with some hot, soapy water before you try going round any corners!

The best way to square off a tyre is hold the front brake in hard as you can and push down on the front of the bike.

Erm.. one thing 18aprilia.

This is on a brand new bike, no?

Aren't you still running it in? Burnouts, ragging the arse off it, running it from cold. No ragging until you have about 600 miles on the clock, and no running hard from cold ever.

The warranty does not cover seizing the engine.

i can do burnouts on my cg, that lump of pure engine power can go for ages, leaving an indentation of rubber on the road, and a foul stench in the air...

I really must try this when my rear tyre is starting to die. Laughing

I'm fast approaching my legal limit on my rear tyre after less than 3000 miles ( Confused ) so may leave rubber on the road before I change it.

Why? Sad You know what it's all about, give the bike a break and look after it. This is not a personal dig at you i just have mechanical sympathy.

Burnouts are dead simple.

Just practice at the lights just feeling the bite point and you'll feel the bike slightly compress the front forks.

Thats the point where you really go for it for a burnout.

Which you don't want to do at the lights!*

Its a good way to give a Viking Burial to an old pair of tyres or start to scrub some new ones in.

*Unless you're my mate Mik.

another way of being out of pocket in terms of rubber pennies is to lock up the rear! Try changing down VERY quickly and the rear should lock up - i must notify the implications regarding the wear on the chains, sprockets, engine and most importantly the tyre when doing it, but it feels so, so, so cool - especially after a hard slog in physics on a friday afternoon Thumbs Up Burnouts in wet is much easier as the rear spins more, but the dramatic effects from the smoke will be much reduced - fun still if you want to know what your rear end feels like Wink
