Posted: 13:02 - 09 Aug 2012 Post subject: Can I get some quick advice R.E these two roundabouts? |
 |
|
I've got my Mod 2 tomorrow morning, I had my final two lessons yesterday, went round the test routes etc... Everything was fine but I'm a little confused about the correct procedure with these two roundabouts, as I didn't manage to get a very good explanation from my instructor, and I just want to ensure I've got this right, or wrong, whatever the case!
Roundabout 1.
https://i50.tinypic.com/20r5ydz.jpg
Coming off a dual carriageway and taking the 4th exit, into another dual carriageway. Right indicator until I pass the last exit before mine, then switch to left right. Now do I change lanes from the lane closest to the island to the left hand lane on that straight after I pass the last exit, or should I stay in the outer lane and continue on that? And if I do change, indicate or not?
Roundabout 2.

This line is correct right? (ignore the awful swerves caused by my crappy hand at painting) Merge into the closest to the island, switch indicator at the blue line again, and no indication just after the first exit where I merge to the outer lane rather than the inner where it splits? Just keep my right indicator on?
Thanks a lot guys I really appreciate this, going to head out and get a little practice in on them both after I get some answers. |

Ok, first off, I passed my test in 2001, and my primary concern since then has been staying alive, not test passing, so the following may be complete wrong. Just so we're clear....
I've put my indicator points in green, and riding line in orange.

This one looks pretty much right, but as soon as you start indicating left (and i'd do this a little earlier than you, i think, but its fine), you need to look at moving into the left lane as soon as you can.

In this one, you're indicating right, so i would stay right (actually in the middle on this part of this roundabout), till you pass the last junction you dont want, then as before, indicate and move to the outside left lane.
If you're in the left lane, but indicating right (as you are on the first part of the roundabout in your version), people may think you're intending on moving into the right hand lane.
Hope that helps.

If the lanes are clearly marked out then stick to them, you will be getting minors if you start changing lanes mid roundabout in your test.
OP your diagrams look fine to me, like others have said, if you do make a wrong turn/lane/indication/etc stick to it they cant minor/major you for doing all the correct procedure but taking the wrong turn/exit but they can if you rapidly change lanes to correct yourself or indicate past a turn. ____________________ Current Bikes:Honda 929RR Fireblade, Honda CD200 Benly (Project), Stomp Z2 140

I would only follow the OP's line if i was going off at the third exit (off the bottom of the pic). If I saw someone going around the roundabout in the extreme left hand lane, but indicating right, i would assume that they either -
a) had made a mistake and wanted to come back into the right hand lane.
b) didn't know what they were doing and should be avoided.
EDIT - edited to make it sound less italian. Twice.

Remember when entering a roundabout in the right hand lane to do a lifesaver on your left for anything on your inside. Lifesaver on the right on exit. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

Thanks so much guys, I was pretty sure I had it right, it feels right to ride, and safe most importantly.
Zen dog, thanks for those diagrams, your right r.e the first pic, I put my indication mark a little too late, I've been doing it where you put yours mostly.
As for the second one, I initially stayed right like you said, but my instructor told me to merge into the outside lane, whilst maintaining that right indicator, which to me feels wrong, but they are adamant it's the correct way I think. |
