So I binned the hornet last night...

Heading down an awesome bit of road I'd never been down before, so wasn't riding too quickly. Coming around a bend at 50ish and the front washes out. Turns out all the recent rain has dragged a small mountain of gravel in to the middle of the road.

I've got a bit of road rash from wearing jeans and where my jacket got dragged up and some bruises here and there but I'm ok.

The bike is a bit worse. Dented tank which I'm not sure if it's got a split in or not, it was wet with fuel when I picked it up but I can't see a puncture. I'll let the photos do the rest

So many people stopped to offer help it was starting to get annoying Laughing one guy even came back after an hour or so to see if I was alright.

At the moment I'm just happy I'm not seriously hurt, it's starting to make me think though, I've had a crash on every single bike I've owned, some my fault some not but if I keep going like this I don't see me being about much longer.

I don't think I could actually give up bikes, I guess advanced training may help but in this instance I wasnt really pushing it, you could put it down to poor obs but the gravel was only piled mid corner and by the time I had seen it I was already scraping down the road...

from the pic you posted leading up to where you binned it, you can quite clearly see gravel/silt quite a long way back - and its not even a tight corner, you should have seen it bud Sad

Not the end of the world though, we all make mistakes, just start learning from them! Wink

Never ride in the middle of the lane, since that is where it collects.

I'd have been much closer to the centre line on that bend, even if there was no gravel, better for obs & smoothness.

As a final point, remember that this does happen after periods of rain, so be aware of that fact, and anticipate it.

Sometimes though, you do get it where the water has flowed across the road and left a convenient band of gravel across the width of it, not much you can do about that, apart from not panic, don't turn or brake until you're over it.

It is scary stuff.

Actually, looking at the pics, you can see where the road has been recently patched, so it has probably disintegrated at that point and created all that gravel.

If that is the case, it would have been nice if the dudes who fixed the road could have got rid of all the shit left on it too.

Those S-bends could've been straight lined (if no traffic/hazards) putting you in a better position (wider entry into the corner).

Glad you're in one piece. Thumbs Up

..and as they they 'round here....Poor Obs. Smile

If someone coming in the opposite direction strays into your lane and hits you, you will be in the wrong:

To be fair to myself I was keeping to the right of the grit but coming around the bend (which is more blind and tight than it looks in the pictures) I must have tightened my line a little and hit it. Still can't believe it has happened, I'm usually pretty good at spottin shite in the road

As said before, you were on the wrong bit of the road.

Surprised you never saw it, but it happens I guess.

Hope you get your wee bike fixed. Thumbs Up

If my bike was blue I'd have no problems and have all the bits on the way. I've got all the bits to make it rideable but I want it back to mint as I was looking to sell fairly soon Evil or Very Mad

Did you sweep the gravel off the road for the next biker who comes along? Razz

Pisses me off, they make out bikes to be so dangerous but let the roads be covered in grit and shit

I suppose it's much to expect them to patrol every road removing debris, but at the same time, shits dangerous!

Damage is not so bad Thumbs Up

Was tempted when a guy ona benneli tornado had a slip on there too, but like I said it is a blind corner, I didn't fancy standing in the middle of the road sweeping up

Report it to the authorities or something, you'd think they'd be liable really, aren't there supposed to be hazard signs around areas like that?

never good when you hit chuckies, trouble is, they are a natural occurance on country roads where there has been plenty of rain, a big problem this year especially in Scotland. Do we expect road sweepers to go out on a daily basis though? ideal for us but we arent considered .

Gah! Bloody gravel eh!

Last night I went through a village I normally use as a cut through, it was dark, and I didn't have my night vision goggles on Shocked, only to find thick grit...it'd been resurfaced that day...it was horrible. To top it off some miserable fooking git in a small car had main beam on behind me...so I slowed right down and forced him to over take me...and gave him main beam all the way home. Ha!

Easyish mistake to make, it's not as if you had long to think about it.

That grit stuff really is horrible to ride on, like riding on a road coated in ball bearings.

Just got it started up after giving the battery a charge, fired up ok but is only running on 3 and pissing fuel everywhere so looks like I've broken a fuel line or something hopefully just pulled off. I will have wip the tank off tomorrow if I'm a bit more mobile Laughing

Not really much you can do in that case. Better observation may have saved you, but these things happen. My only off so far was a slow speed low side. Lost the front on a roundabout at about 10-15mph. As far as I can tell I didn't do anything seriously wrong to know about it, so I'm guessing there was crap on the road/tyre.
I did hit a load of cement coming round a corner on my 125 once. Somehow managed to stay on the bike. Mostly luck but quick and controlled reactions certainly helped.

I hit a newly gravelled road with a front tire psi of 7 Shocked on my first ever solo ride. So I concur!
