Hi their, im Trying to buy a 125 to use for a while and do my test soon as possible and have seen a tzr up for sale.
I was looking for some advice on restricting it as its full power and was just wondering what is required to do this and the costs roughly if done by a garage.
The tzr is the same as this one on ebay,

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-TZR125-/150875424179?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item2320e045b3#ht_971wt_922

Thanks for any help

TZR is a 'collectable' teenage revival toy, and you can pay up to £2K for a nice one. Cheaper ones are either wrecks, or thrashed to death and unlikely to make a reliable daily rider.

Nice, fun bikes, BUT....

You want to get a test, and soon?

There's roughly 25-WEEKS left until the Learner-Licence Laws change and you will only be able to get a 125 'only' licence on a 125.

Theory/Hazard test waits are running at around two weeks
Mod 1 test dates are running at about three weeks
Mod 2 tests dates are running at around six weeks.

But at some test centres, waits can be double that.

Do each sequentially, booking one after passing the last; it's going to take aprox 12 weeks to get a licence IF you pass every test first time.

Thats half the time left to get a licence worth having on a 125.....

Personally? I'd not be risking my chances to get a full licence looking at older, less reliable, machines likely to make that job harder! Esp as I'd probably only want it until January!

I'd be looking for something 'ready to go' that needs no work to make it learner legal and examiner freindly, and not so likely to have problems to de-niggle to make it useable.

Thanks for the advice teflon mike. I understand what you mean. I would ideally want something i could just jump on and ride but i have been looking for a while now and up in glasgow not much comes up for sale. Iv been to my local yamaha dealer but that was just a few used yzf r125's for 3000 and an 07 cagiva mito for 2900 which seems too much to me.

Sounds like you are determined to have something with fairings......

Plenty of bikes you could get a test on if you widen your search to include commuters, even cruisers, HECK, sod the style, you got 25 weeks to get a test with it! Once thats sorted you NEVER have to ride it again! Stick it in paper and be rid, then go looking for something more suiting your sense of style, with some power to match it!

Its more a case of thats all im seeing. I narrowly missed out on a dt 125 on ebay but other than not noth much nearby coming up for sale.

I had thought of just going for the mito at the dealers and de restricting after test but i think 2900 for an 07 with 5k miles on it is too much money. Whats your thoughts?

As far as older 2 strokes go TZR's are pretty reliable.

Even if you get one which has been neglected, an engine rebuild is cheap and easy to do, and will usuually give it another lease of life providing the frame or forks are not bent etc..

Good ones are getting more expensive, but if you buy wisely it will serve you well.

People say 4 strokes are easier to live with which may be true but remember they can also be neglected (Learners often do this) and a neglected 4 stroke is usually more expensive to fix than a 2 stroke.

A 2 stroke 125 is usually faster and more fun to ride, and can usually be de-restricted once of you have passed your test, which can save you the money of buying a bigger bike for a while.

Also they are going up in value, if you buy a good one you won't loose any money on it. Buy a new or nearly new YBR or similar and it will depreciate.

except this is a non-YPVS model so won't have one, and will most likely be on or below the legal limit.

If it doesn't have the YPVS but is full power, it is quite likely someone has half done the job of de-restricting it by locking the powervalve fully open.

It is a 10 min job to put it back in the 12bhp position, plus you will gain lots of low rev torque in comparison to it being fully open.

To be honest i would wait, in my experience of looking for the TZR you could pick up a very good one for less than £1000 which didn't need anything doing unless it's one of the YPVS as standard Model's Thumbs Up

Looks very nice. The Zorst has been recently resprayed but that's about the only thing that I can see from the photos.

Just to clarify, that is the 3PC2. Standard exhaust is mildly restricted, with no servo blanking plate as it never was an option on this bike.

Power output is a shade over 13bhp for a bike in good condition.

It is possible to convert these bikes to YPVS but that requires changing the exhaust, CDI, and loom which is prolly more hassle than it's worth.

HTH

Do you mean that that model would not require me Re-restricting timmeh?
The current owner said that it goes to 90mph (im guessing thats clock speed) and its full power.
He also said that the bike needs a couple minutes ticking over before you blast it, im presuming by this he means letting it reach temperature.

They did make a YPVS version of this bike, but they were rare.
You can retro-fit a pully, cable setup, and servo on to these, using parts from the 4DL.

As has been said, to restrict it to 12bhp, you can just pin the powervalve closed (Rotate it 180 degrees).

Fantastic engines, mine ran really well in the road legal pitty.
