Had my first proper off today (in 7 years of riding)... Bars are snapped, tank is damaged, rear panel, foot peg broken off...

I've got 6 yrs protected NCB.

Reckon I might have to claim on my insurance (£300 excess) as KTM parts aren't that easy to find for this bike in perfect nick, and it's £6k of bike... Want it to be mint again!

How badly do you think this will affect next years premium?

Just a quote from an advice site I read a while ago

"1.Avoid making a claim for every little thing as it can cost you in the long run. By make a claim on your insurance you won’t build up a no claims bonus that will bring your premiums down in the future. In fact making a claim is almost certainly going to push up the cost of your insurance in the future. Therefore it can be much better economy to pay for minor accidents yourself rather than using your insurance to pay."

If I were you, first thing I would do is run around the Internet and call some dealers to find out how much everything is to replace.

Then grab some price comparison sites, look at how much it would cost next year with a claim on your record, and bare in mind its there for 5 years (so may effect your insurance for 5 years).

If you still feel its worth it after that, go for it. But do a touch of homework first. Thumbs Up Having a niggling claim sit there on your record every time you get insurance for 5 years sucks donkey balls. Especially if its something you could have paid for upfront.

Protected NCB = staying with the same co to keep it.
Even then, they can load the quote while still giving you the 6 years NCB. So does not mean a cheaper quote.

Personally I would not waste the extra payment on protecting NCB. Don't claim and you have given then something for nothing. Claim and they simply load you another way to make sure they get the money back.

My experience of making claims is that the insurance companies ALWAYS get their money back out of you - with interest. Unless you are driving a brand new car or bike.

Do a quote for all of your vehicles on an insurance comparison site with a claim/reduced NCB, consider that your premiums might be worse off for up to 5 years.

Check the cost to repair your bike.

If you are old and get cheap insurance even with a claim or if the bike is really expensive to repair it might be worth it. Personally, it'd need to be maybe £1000+ before I'd use the insurance.

Well the bike is quite badly damaged, £1500 I reckon would just about sort it... Gonna have to claim for it.

Iv'e done some quotes and they aren't too expensive with a claim on my record.

I'll be 29 when I renew and my only accident.

Bike is worth 6k so got to do it.

Now I always thought that, but someone on here said in another thread that protected NCB was transferrable between insurance companies. I'm sure who said that worked in the insurance industry but I can't remember the thread to find it again.

Like others had said a bit of home work is required, its simply not true that in every case you will end up paying back the claim amount due to higher premiums over following 5 years. There are so many factors that effect your premium.

I had a claim last year worth £1000, my premium has only gone up by 50 quid so if that remains the case for 5 years thats £250.

If you're never going to make a claim then that seems like an even bigger waste of money to me.
