Hi all

Was on the way to work this morning then a road had been closed, only one way to go. So I thought I'd turn right and find my way back to where I need to go:

Purple line is my normal route, red line is the route I took, orange is the cycle crossing. At this point, I could turn left or go straight on (cycle bit) I chose straight on as I had lost my bearings but knew the road straight ahead of me was what I needed to get on. I realise now I could have done a left then down the road, right etc.

Here's what it looked like:

Can you get penalised for it, cameras etc?

Stolen from another site, I am no legal council ...

However the legislation you are looking for is S34 Road Traffic Act 1988

Prohibition of driving mechanically propelled vehicles elsewhere than on roads.

(1)Subject to the provisions of this section, if without lawful authority a person drives a mechanically propelled vehicle—

(a)on to or upon any common land, moorland or land of any other description, not being land forming part of a road, or

(b)on any road being a footpath, bridleway or restricted byway,

he is guilty of an offence.
(2)For the purposes of subsection (1)(b) above, a way shown in a definitive map and statement as a footpath, bridleway or restricted byway is, without prejudice to section 56(1) of the M1Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, to be taken to be a way of the kind shown, unless (subject to section 34A of this Act) the contrary is proved.

(3)It is not an offence under this section to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle on any land within fifteen yards of a road, being a road on which a motor vehicle may lawfully be driven, for the purpose only of parking the vehicle on that land.

It should be a fine as it is non endorsable.

If there was a camera and it saw you then I would expect a £60 fine.

I know exactly where you mean. I work on the corner of Graham Street.
Its definately bicycles only dead ahead at that junction & sometimes there is a bicycle repairer stationed at the crossing.
Don't think there are any cameras covering that bit, but I've seen thousands of pedestrians walking over the cycle lane, so watch yourself.
All it needs is one copper to clock you.
Should have done a left & followed the one way system (hoping it was open), but hope there are no cameras and you got away with it.

There's also the failure to obey the left turn only sign (TS50?) giving you 3 points.

And if they really hate you there's always the great catch all of "without reasonable consideration for other road users".

As said above, should have gone round the one-way sytem or switched off the engine and pushed it.

Also, just for clarification, the word on the right says "Fag".

What?

Why didn't you just throw a U turn and head back to Old St? Or turn left out of Duncan Terrace then go around the one way back onto Goswell as you would normally do or even just head out onto Islington High St behind RBS Regents Hse?

Yes that junction is camera'd yes you will probably get nicked. Seriously, what did you expect?

As soon as I did it I thought what the bloody hell am I doing, was a stupid idea. I never do anything like that and have been riding 8+ years on the road, can only put it down to not thinking and frustration.

I could have turned left and gone round the one way or the other options as you say.

Was just curious if there was a penalty for it (now answered Sad ) hopefully I get away with it but if not, tough lesson learnt.
