I've not had to do this for 15 years, but I am wanting to get a puppy sometime later this year, probably after half term in October as I am away that week.

With my last dog, who was in fact my first dog I simply drove past a farm on my way to work, saw a sign and went in.

Now I would like to choose the breed. I am not fussed for KC registered and I would consider a cross breed.

I have seen the website pets4homes and it looks interesting. However there is no feedback system and adds are free to place, so how can ypu be sure.

I'd know to look at the mother and maybe the father, I would prefer a pup that had been raised inside, so would know what a TV was etc.

I'm looking I think for a lab or a border collie. Though my wife wants a spaniel.

Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

First thing to do is to go to your local RSPCA kennels or your animal shelter and rescue a breed.

The RSPCA will probably look at your house and garden, and teach you a bit about the dog, and some you can get house trained. Thumbs Up

Save a dog from being killed rather than buying a puppy off people on breeding website / ads. They're all dogs bred consistently for money and more puppies.

Most are neglected animals, just put through torture.

Go to the RSPCA and look for a puppy. If nothing floats your boat, buy from a breeder. But make sure you look at the mother and father. Someone I know thought they were buying a pure Staff. Turned out to be a Pit Bull!

And aren't Spaniels really hyperactive dogs? If so, you should probably get loads of toys, or you'll come back to a Turner & Hooch seen one day.

Desc, details, registration, insurance and puppy pack all point to the better breeder.

Then viewing the parents, if refusal of the father is given then that's imo not a good pointer.

Then you visit and meet the breeder.

There are many at home repsonsible caring breeders.

Usually paying at least market rate for a good pup aswell.

The more work you put in before commiting the better the outcome.

Don't get spaniels, they have brain deadness and are the new chav dog. Thumbs Up

border collie-seroious walking needed .... SEROISLY lots.

Seroius spelling is - annoying.

What can you offer a dog, will be best to determine choosing one. Idea

Go see a man.

My uncle was always going to see a man about a dog.

He never got one, but it made hime very tired, so much so he became unsteady on his feet and slured his words.

It must be hard looking for dogs.

I would secong getting a dog from the RSPCA. It costs £150 for a puppy younger than 6 months I think and £130 for a dog older than that. And you are really giving these dogs a second chance in life.

They have a lot of dogs and you are bound to find something you like. They all come neutered or spayed and have their first set of jabs and also come microchipped.

I went and got one from a Pedigree KC mum and dad. chose the one which looked and behaved nice and quiet.

Shes the opposite of hyperactive. doesnt really like to play ball either! - loves her walks, and Ducks......

I've had three dogs.

First was through a personal recommendation as I wanted a specific breed. The litter was a one off and I was able to view mother, grandmother and as I was the first to collect all the puppies. He was a lovely dog from a lovely home. Father was a KC registered dog, but I didn't get to view - certainly not an issue or uncommon.

Second dog was given to me through a breed rescue again through a personal recommendation. He was the most wonderful dog I think I will ever have the luck to 'own'. He'd been a 'failed' show dog so had been trained brilliantly and came to me at three years old.

Third and current dog was bought for an ex but he decided he didn't want him after 24 hours, so I kept him instead. I saw the advert in the local store/PO and went to see the litter first. They had both the mother and father and kept one of the litter for themselves. It had been an accidental litter as they had rescued the father and shortly after the mother had come into season!

With all the dogs (and incidentally my cats) I have kept in contact with the people I got them from - birthdays and Christmas. Decent proper families, not ruthless financially motivated breeders. You know when it's right and the only thing I will say is however hard, never ever get a puppy because you feel sorry for it in it's circumstances. The best thing you can do is walk away and report your findings to the KC or anyone who might listen.

Having had a rehome/rescue mature dog I would certainly consider this for the future. Puppies are lovely but they are hard work; worth it without a doubt, but not to be underestimated. My rehome was a delight from start to finish and whilst he took a while to settle properly, I had very little to do except love him to bits and restore his confidence - who wouldn't love every second of doing that!!

I Wub doggies!!

Well my dogs always came from female dogs Laughing

sorry couldnt resist.

I always looked in local papers. I prefer Rotties, but dont need papers. Just good family and home protection dogs. So i go look at ads where I can see both parents, look for strong, not temperental dogs that wont back down.

You can see when the dogs have been well taken care off and have good stable temperment

I seriously considered an ex racing greyhound, but I was told they have to be muzzled when they are out as due to their training they are rather prone to reduce the local cat/squirrel/rabbit population to dog food so I passed on that choice. I like to play with my dogs and I definatly don't like muzzles.

I ended up with (another) German Shepherd. I got him from the RSPCA. He was 5 when we got him and had been back to them twice. I don't know why he was in there, they only said it was circumstances that weren 't due to his behaviour, but he is one of the best dogs I have ever had. No issues, loves everyone and brilliant with kids.

https://img526.imageshack.us/img526/3424/20120222100003.jpg

https://img24.imageshack.us/img24/2019/imag0063f.jpg

He cost me £85 (probably a lot more now, that was 3 years ago) at the time from the RSPCA as he was an older dog and if you consider the price of jabs etc. i don't think that was anything excessive.

When I got him, there were about 40 dogs at the shelter of all kinds. This was Blackberry farm, one of the bigger places and has been on those reality animal shows a few times.

https://www.rspca.org.uk/inyourarea/detail/-/iya/Blackberry%20Farm%20Animal%20Centre/

So go look at your local rescue places, it's a much better idea than lining the pockets of puppy farm owner. Thumbs Up

I'm loving all the dog pictures.

There is a large Rspca in th town I live (halifax), so I will have a look there. I am also open to a cross breed, looking at insurance quotes they are much cheaper. Perahps something like a border collie/german shephard cross.

Its early days, but I am going to start buying stuff, such as a large crate, toys, bowls etc.

I cant't get a dog until after half term in October as we are on holiday. Which means I probably can't go on holiday until October 2013 as I wouldn't want to leave a younger dog in Kennels. Unfortunately I have aleays had to kennel my dog when on holiday.

FWIW I struggle to get away now as I would never leave the Grottie in a kennel for several reasons, but lack of understanding of the breed and his over sensitive temperament are the main two. However, I would most definitely make sure any dog I get in the future was used to kennels, as it makes life so much easier. Friends of ours used to take their dog to the kennel for a day, then an overnight and then weekend to get it used to being left. It's a bit different with a rehome/rescue who may have been 'left' at kennels, but it's worth a go. My rehome took about 6 months to settle and be happy for me to leave him for a few days, but that was just me leaving him with my parents, not kennels.

Another alternative is do what friends of mine do and that's leave their dogs with me when they go away!! My dog loves having his little chums to stay and it becomes a bit of a home from home for them too. My friends can relax on holiday and text me whenever they need for an update. It's quite a big ask I guess, but I don't mind as I love the dogs and although it's not reciprocal with my current dog, one day I know I will have this as an option!

The local PO/shop has adverts in their window for proper home stay arrangements, so you could investigate something like that if your new dog is nervous of a more formal kennel arrangement and you don't have any bonkers friends!

I bought from a breeder (my cousin as it happens) as the RSPCA and other local dog charities wouldn't allow me to rehome a dog due to my working hours. (I'm out 9 hours a day)

So I bought a dog, she gets walked in the morning, walked at night, walked for hours and hours at the weekend, we take her to Austria when we go skiing, we take her camping twice a year.

She spends pretty much the whole day while I'm out asleep, the neighbours have never heard her bark, she hasn't messed or chewed since she was a pup. (which is to be expected)

I think she has a better home and happier life than being locked in a 6x5 concrete cage for XX hours a day.
