PostPosted: 22:11 - 13 Aug 2012    Post subject: help - Yamaha FZS 600 Fazer 1999 engine vibrates/wobbles... Reply with quote

Hello everyone around here,
Firstly I want to warmly greet everyone in this forum, I just have registered here.

What brought me here is an issue with my bike.(fzs 600)
Overnight, in the morning on my way to work as usual, I felt the engine started vibrating and produced an unstable wobbling sound and now on the second day, the vibration has been increased significantly and I can also smell of unburnt fuel coming out from exhaust. The wobble is very annoying, feels just like some pistons does not burn fuel(i am not sure, thats why I need help), almost impossible to ride, but I had to get from A to B and I am really worried about the bike.
Just got my licence(18yrs) and restrictors cerificated ( 33 bhp ).

PS.It vibrates when I accelerate or hold the throttle. No vibration when loosen the throttle.

+Chain and sprockets are in a very good condition
...

Any possible ideas, what causes the bike to vibrate?Any help would be highly appreciated.

Martin7R.

You will probably get a better response by asking this kind of question in the workshop section buddy, all the hardcore mechanic types hang out there Smile.

check engine mounts, may not explain the unburnt fuel smell but someone on here once spent ages trying to find mechanical issues and it turns out his engine mounts were loose.

No loose or perished fuel lines or leaks or anything like that?

Mike

Edit: Check spark plugs are good too and are burning all the fuel in the combustion chamber, and aren't wet with fuel.

Could be the carbs are badly out of balance.

thats a possibility , because when I removed the tank, one of the fuel lines was folded so there possibly could not flow much or any fuel , but still I managed to start the engine?
I am going to get new spark plugs aswell.

I have lately restrictor washers installed, could one of them move from its place and cause instability ?

Replaced spark plugs today and checked for spark - all OK.
Removed restrictor washers.
Checked engine mountings.
No loose fuel pipes or damaged pipes.

when removed old spark plugs, they were wet.
All the same as before, vibrate and noticed that the engine is hard to start when its usually easy to start just 1 sec, but now I have to twist throttle and still takes 3-4 sec to start and hard to start.'

also noticed that the fuel consumption has increased significantly.

What could it make behave like that ?

Were all of the spark plugs wet? If so, check the choke is operating properly. My guess is that the choke is stuck on, perhaps the cable was kinked or stretched when the restrictors were fitted.

how to exactly check the choke ?

edit: I recalled that when I changed the plugs, first 3 were wet , but the 4th was not that wet.

top left of the carbs there's a plunger that shoudl come in and out when you move the choke lever, if it doesn't go back in fully thats your problem

Thanks rob fzs
the choke lever doesnt seem to be stuck.

But I have collected a couple of facts :

When cold starting, it starts with no problems. When warm starting, it takes 3-4 seconds to fire up with throttle twisting , and still starts very hard. And also fuel cnsumption has increased like Isaid before.

So theres my thought that there is too much fuel getting into engine, because with cold start it wants more fuel and therefor start more easy and when warm , it doesnt need that much fuel, so then it starts hard.

Could it bewith the carbs?Or something stuck? what can it be when there is too much fuel getting in?

The carb rubbers on these split, this can give odd running and would explain the unburnt fuel. Also if it has been restricted using washer it would have disturbed the carb rubbers making the splits worse if it has any.

Sounds about right. My mate's 2000 model has slightly cracked rubbers. However I would have thought this would make it lean not rich.

The choke lever might be moving but not the chokes on the carbs, check the plungers go all the way home erith the choke in.

Also, who fitted the restrictors? Could they have deliberately adjusted the float height to get more business out of you?

Yes the lever is moving with no problems. And now im pretty sure that there is too much fuel going in engine.
Thanks Pete, I am going to see the carbs inside, and restrictors were fitted by local motorbike shop, and I dont really know if they did anything more , but how I check the float height?

I don't think the collectors (rubbers) are disfunctioning, because then like beechbone said, it would make lean not so rich fuel mixture that there is increase of fuel consumption and unburnt fuel coming out of exhaust.

Start the bike up, spray some WD40 on the inlet rubbers, if the running suddenly changes you have an air leak.

Just to be sure - they didn't fit the restrictor washers between the carbs and airbox, did they? That would cause the symptoms you describe.
