Ok, so I've had my bike a week and want to start riding to work. Trouble really is that our car park is down a side road 2 minute walk from the office and to be honest I don't fancy leaving it there regular as I fear it will go walkies.

Anyway, directly opposite my office is a shop that is no longer in use,it has dropped kerbs but also a solid single yellow line in the road (see below photo).

Can I park on there? I'm only concerned because the traffic wardens are rife round here and don't want to get a ticket if I can help it

I want to park there as I can see it from the office, its off the road and also has streetlight so will be potentally safer (from thieves) come autumn/winter and the dark nights.

(The owner of my firm actually owns that building and it won't be occupied till next year )

Is that area in front of the double doors part of the premises?

How nice is the boss? If that's shop access he may be up for you parking in front of it or even inside.

Find out what the local council's policy on bikes being parked on the pavement is. They'd be the people to ask, since they're the ones that will be issuing enforceable fines if you get it wrong.

Yeah the double doors are part of the building. I was hoping to park in front of them.

I've got permission from the owner, but not sure if that's enough? Is it technically classed as being on the pavement and if so, seeing as there's a yellow line on the road, would it make it ticketable?

I have no idea at the moment where I can and can't park my bike so I'm just checking this out cos it will potentially be there all day Monday to Friday.

A guy in london had parking tickets, and lost his appeal IIRC for parking on his own land outside of his office because there wasn't a clear distinction between his land and the pavement.

Please excuse the daily fail article, first one that came up:

Have a word with the traffic wardens to see what they say. Given that they are the one's who will be ticketing you.

TBH looks like a clear define between pavement and property boundry. Given the wall to the next property and the car parked up in that area next door.

Checking with the local traffic nazis is definitely a good bet, that area in front of the doors has a drop kerb and a well defined off pavement area so if they do object get their reasons then contact council

Looking at the picture it would appear to me at any rate that the land in front of the double doors is a driveway. That would be the same for the neighbouring property.

Certainly the wall between the two would indicate a formal boundary between properties. The wall ends at the public footpath.

Therefore I'm thinking this marks the boundary of the private land and the public highway/footpath.

So to all intent the bike would be parked on private land and not obstructing the walkway (as the wall already does this).

Please post the result of any inquiry/decision Thumbs Up

It's a real grey area isn't it. Doesn't help that the pathway isn't separate from the tarmac at the front of the building and so no clear definition between path and shopfront.

I did think it would be ok in front of the doors cos it does look like a kind of driveway in front of the side entrance doors. But its only going to take one jobsworth who needs to reach his target and I'll end up with a ticket and subsequent wrangle, which I really can't be arsed with.

Think I will try and speak to a warden if I see one, but they tend to be quite aloof. They tend to park up in their cars, then get out, quickly issue a ticket, then bog off sharpish, so actually catching one to chat too isn't easy.

May approach the council, but you've got more chance of getting a reply from Santa Claus than getting any speedy reply from the council.

I suppose the other thing would be to see if the owners have a copy of the plans so they can see exactly where their property finishes and where the public path starts.

The slight concern is the street lamp, that MUST be classed as council land and that is in the same tarmac as the bit in front of the shop.

Yeah but then they don't always know wtf they are talking about.

I had one come up to me this morning and ask me if I had "a permit to park in this motorcycle bay".

I stepped back from the markings on the road around the bay (to check that it had not been changed overnight) - and then declared that I did not.

But that I was cognizant of the fact that Kensington &Chelsea not only have residents-only-permit bays for motorcycles, but also bays for non-residents.

And that as I had been parking there for probably close on 3 years (as opposed to around the corner in Chelsea Square, where it is a residents-only bay) ... that I was very aware it was NOT a residents-only bay, and that I had worked across the road and parked there for the entire time of my employment there.

I made sure I pointed out AGAIN to him that it was NOT a residents-only bay, and that ANYBODY could park their bike there.

Creepy little slimeball noob, sloped off saying "Good, good".

Never has a nugget of smug-biker-bogey tasted so good.

Best bet: Always avail yourself of THE FACTS before you park anywhere. Otherwise, your wallet will suffer.

Don't ask the goons, they're most likely private, on commission, and will cheerfully lie to you.

Send that image (or a better one) to the council's parking department and get an answer from them. Make it clear that there's no current dispute, you just want to avoid one.

It looks like a driveway to me.

I'm a bit surprised that the building owner doesn't know what land he owns though.
