Got my gixxer Sat, new back tyre, alarm and few other bits and pieces.
Out the other night to collect a gel seat for it and on the way back I hit a pothole which nearly threw me off.

Didn't look at the bike since potholes are commonplace on our 3rd world roads.
Go out to change the rear pads this morning as using it for work today and to take the lad out to France tomorrow to find this...

https://i370.photobucket.com/albums/oo141/bramble43/wheel2.jpg

I had camera on the swing arm at the time which caught the (lack of) action but is some evidence. I'll put the vid on once it's uploaded

Whats the chances of getting council/highways to pay for a new wheel and tyre?

It's the A36 not far from Salisbury just about HERE

The video. At about 34 seconds.

Don't know what your chances will be, but it's worth a punt. Photos of wheel, photos of pothole, stroppy letter initially. Take a scan of the signed letter, and if they don't get back to you or start being difficult, send an email response (including the scan of the signed letter), with your local MP copied in, and see where it goes.
Potholes that are big enough to cause that kind of damage are a serious risk to road users, and it should be sorted out ASAP.

They can only be liable if you can show they already knew about the pothole and did nothing about it within a reasonable timeframe.

Report it direct to the council and/or the fixmystreet website. See what happens

So video evidence of massive pot hole and eBay listing pictures with fully intact rim?

Probs worth a punt, it might have been reported before. I got fobbed off when I buckled a car wheel on a pot hole. They did fix the road though.

That looks more like a fast kerb strike than a pothole you never really registered at the time. Are you sure it was not there when you picked the bike up?

The tyre still has tyre lube and casting hairs on it. The tyre place would have had to ignore it and tyre up and refit his dangerous wheel for that to have been there when he bought it Surprised .

Looking closely at it, the rim has scuff damage from directly hitting something like a big stone or kerb.
Agree it will probably tap back with care.

I had the tyre fitted in Bristol Saturday afternoon. It certainly wasn't there then and isn't in any of the images taken since then.

I'm off to London shortly and will go get pics of the hole in the road and picking up a wheel hopefully from a breakers so I can be back on it tomorrow.

I'm not keen on bashing it out and not really happy about using that tyre after such an impact but not blowing that sort of cash on a tyre that has only done 200 miles.

Vid is on now.

Not quite - they could also be found liable for not having in place a system of check. That is to say, if they've no record of inspecting the road at a frequency deemed to be reasonable then there's negligence.

You were very lucky to stay on, it is obviously down to good riding and strict adherence to the speed limit.

Nice "progressive" riding there. Very Happy

Thats one hell of a ding though, is it really safe to just hammer it back? You'd think the structural integrity would be affected when the damage is that significant.

Not really. Dented rims from potholes are common here. Small deep holes can be worse than wide ones. Cages especially frequently get dented rims.

If you are braking when you hit them it is far worse. I just stand on the pegs and let the bike jump and absorb it with my knees to put let of a jolt on the rims and suspension.

Don't forget to take pictures showing a tape measure with the size of the pothole, and also showing the background area so that they can identify exactly where it is in the countryside.
Also helps when they fill it in & deny knowledge that it was there in the first place

I hit one years back on my CD185

The wheel rim/tyre were fine but it knackered the wheel bearing.

Lucky you had that rim tape on though. Probably would have split the wheel in half if you didn't.

They won't miss the whole in the road, not like it's just suddenly appeared out of nowhere overnight.

The car on other side of road gives some idea of how large it is, wouldn't want to be stood in the road there with a tape measure tbh.
