Hi, I just wondering how you all nod to other bikers.

Do you put your head to the side? If so which side.

Just a forward nod?


I hope a combination of these don't mean lets stop in the next layby for **** as my head gets blown round all over the shop and I could be saying anything :

I guess it depends who it is

If it is to an oriental rider I bow deep at the waist

If it is to a muslim I take both hands off the bars and do a salaam

if the rider is on a gay bike I dont nod in case I get it wrong

If it is a mate I give him one of these

Ok, cool. Being new and all... I had to ask.

Based on my hugely funded research* in this area, I've noticed the following:

People with blacked out visors don't nod, you don't exist.
Cruiser riders don't nod.

Goldwing riders ignore everyone, especially if they have a trailer attached to the back of their bike.

Open faced helmet riders don't nod.

Sports bike riders with clear visors nod.

Learner riders stare in fear like you're going to rape them.


All this only applies to bikers I've passed in Suffolk.

I'm actually allergic to motorcycles.
Whenever I see one I tend to get runny nose, eyes itchy and so on.

Then I sneeze.

It's not a nod.

I've recently ridden from the East Midlands and been 150 miles south and 200 miles north and have noticed quite a pronounce regional variation in nodding.

Around the East Midlands it seems that most bikers nod (with the exceptions already noted in ScaredyCat's post) but as you head south it seems less bikers nod. However the further north you go the more nods you get and the more crazy the nodding and waving becomes. On the A19 just south of Newcastle a pillion looked like they were going to fall off waving at me and a little later on the A1 a guy on a black sportsbike (can't recognise them all yet) actually did the official BCF biker nod (see above posts) at me! I did wonder if I was about to encounter a speed camera van or something but didn't see anything to warrant such crazy waving
