im sure this has been covered before but i've done a search and not found the answer im looking for.

so about a month ago i got my 125 Intruder and im now quite comfortable with it, done town and country riding with no problems so i popped into Arnolds in Nottingham today and had quite alot of expensive summer stuff put on order among which an open face lid.

at the moment the shades i wear in my full face are the cheapo aviators from the local garage but i cant ride any faster that about 30mph with my visor open without my eyes watering. Is this just because they are cheap and dont sit very well or is this a problem with all shades...or do i just need to man up?

im not looking at spending any more than £30-40 as im pretty clumsy with them no matter what the price is, worst one is putting them on my head (i wear a bandana) and leaning forward to watch them crash, lens first, onto the floor!

so, good motorcycle aviators for under £40?

cheers, james

If your eyes are watering close your visor a bit.

Bugs hurt.

well obviously i do at the moment but with an open face that'll be fairly difficult...

and regarding bugs i shall see how i go but i think that bandanna that goes on my head will likely be round my face lol

cheers, james

Aviators are no good, they let wind up the sides.

You need wraparounds.

I wear DeWalt safety glasses. 5 quid from Arco.

Man up? I used to ride 90mph home with the visor up for a few hours on some journeys. You just get used to it. Biggest problem is flies, they really hurt.

Get a pinlock to stop it misting if thats the problem? They are amazing bits of kit. Otherwise just keep your visor down, and keep it about a finger crack open to let air in.

I have some Davida sunglasses to go with the open face. Padded around the eyes to reduce windblast straight into the cornea, and come with a few different colour of lenses.

I had some of those. The hinges were made out of soft toffee. Lasted about two months.

Why the obsession with aviators? Do you wank over TOP GUN?

I've already told you, you need wraparounds.

With open face, you'll want something that sits tight on your face: goggles, or sports/cycling glasses with foam backing.

They should conform to and be marked with: BS 4110:1979 Grade X; BS 4110:1979 XA, YA or ZA; 89/686/EEC; 93/68/EEC, 93/95/EEC or 96/58/EEC. And of course, every copper you encounter will have that memorised. Wink

I wear Helly Eagle ones, I tend to have the elasticated band rather than the arms as it makes them fit more snug on long runs

So do I. But they're useless with an open face helmet.

They're shit with an open face, as you have found in conjunction with an open visor. So, it's the fact that I'm right, that makes me right.

I'm a rude twat who knows far more than you do about wearing an open face with glasses. You should trust me because I've been riding cruisers with pisspot helmets and shades for the last four years and 20,000 miles and you'll be wanting back up from the likes of me when the trolls on here brutally rape you over your Tom Cruise fantasies.

Actually, you want people to tell you that aviators are a good choice with a pisspot helmet. Well, good luck with that on BCF.

You should buy that jacket. George Michael wore one like it at the Olympic closing ceremony. Make sure you wear the aviators with it.

You'll get used to it mate.
When your eyes start watering: Blink hard/scrunch up face a few times untill it stops. 3-6 months of riding in open face/shades with no visor and your body just sorta gets used to it.

yes, that is what i have found, with shit cheapo shades that sit about an inch off my face, the better quality ones tend to fit tighter and therefore will let less air in

that may be the case, you've given a very blunt answer to a very open question, in my experience, blunt answers usually come from highly opinionated people who are generally wrong.
nope, fairly sure i wont want your back up thanks, i'd rather stand alone, although you've just given me fair reason to believe you you've als given me fair reason to not like you.

Actually, i want people to tell me the make and model of some aviators that are good, i find it hard to believe that they are all exactly the same, somehow. if it is proven that they are all shit then i'll look into something else but until then i wont.

My lid has a visor position the keeps it open about 1 poss 2 mm, seems to help a lot when need be.

Just do one thing. Take a close look at a pair of aviators. They are a certain shape, with open sides. You're not going to get around that fact, because without that shape they are no longer aviators.
