Hiya,
Well, my bike needed some work. So I took it to CMC's and they did it. Seemed like a nice bunch and a store so full of lovely bikes Thumbs Up
So, they fix my bike. And inform me of some work that it'll need soon. The nice man writes down how much the parts are going to cost me as he doesn't want to say it out loud and risk me having a coronary in the store Thumbs Down
New steering bearings (fair d, affordable) and a new monoshock. Which Yamaha want over two hundred pounds for for a new OEM part Shocked Thumbs Down Bastards. The nice mechanic suggests I get round some breakers rather than pay that.
So I go home, a little shocked at my 'affordable' transport turning into a cash sinkhole. Start looking for parts. Found a company selling them (I assume pattern) for 72 quid. Much, much better. (I'll add the link later, don't have it on this PC).
So, does anyone have experience of sourcing parts from the internet before? Stores to avoid, stores to use etc.?
Also, on the question of pattern parts - how much quality (if any) do I lose over OEM?
Cheers all Thumbs Up

Hello,
A few months back i brought a suzuki ts 50 x. it was a stolen recovered that had been beaten up a little. new front fearings lots of bits and bobs like that. any ways the two pattern parts i did get were the black box part of the exhaust which fit fine although the bracket in the middle of the bike was a little out because it was for a new model. I also got a pattern back light which works fine, great quality, i imagine it will be a lot more accurate on a bigger more popular bike. My friend has brought a few pattern parts and his all fit his honda hornet fine. hope this helps a little, they do seem a lot more worth the money i saved about 70 pound on this exhaust.
Good luck with the pattern parts! if you can tell me how u got on. Thumbs Up

The company I was on about was this lot bits for bikes. It was £79 actually, but that's still a far cry from the £230 odd for the OEM Shocked And they actually have it Thumbs Up
So anyone used the net for parts before?

The internet is fine for buying anything, infact ebay and "for sale" sections on forums are probably the easiest places to scam someone. I have bought around £500 of spares so far from all sorts of places, no trouble yet.

As for pattern parts, the fork seals are rubbish and the pistons are not as good as OE but most other things are fine.

Hi

What make is the rear shock you are looking at?

£200 is not actually that bad a price for an OE rear shock. Cheapest high quality rear shocks are really Hagons and they start at about £200.

All the best

Keith

Pattern parts are never as good as OEM parts. However, sometimes the quality is there of thereabouts. On the other hand they can be total rubbish.

For example, I would use pattern pistons on most bikes, but I always use OEM piston rings. Things like reg/recs and consumables like brake pads and bearings pattern is fine.

Were you told what was wrong with your shock? You might be able to get it rebuilt, though I don't know how cost effective that would be. Some breakers sell through eBay, so it's worth a look.

.

got to disagree with this, lots of pattern parts are out of the same factory that made the oem ones. Exactly the same bits in a different box. Some bits can even be better, 4 stroke pistons for big block engines are a prime example.

As for Ebay, I`ve bought loads of bike parts thro ebay, been very successful, at least as good as a breakers and considerably cheaper.

'Ello.
I came across this on ebay - link. Would it fit on my '89 TZR? I know it says '93+, but the pattern parts I've been looking at are for '87-'96 Confused
Also, does my definition of 'clean' expect too much? That looks quite rusty to me...

Heh, that's what I thought Very Happy I was more wondering about whether it would fit on my '89. Still, like you say, if I can get it sub £10, no real harm done.
