 |
|
Alright guys,
I made up the wiring loom for my Chaly this evening.
Headlight bulb went pop straight away. Of course, it's 6v. oops!
Now the bulb in question is one of these:
https://www.bitzfor.co.uk/ebay/bitzforbikes/listings/hilevelphotos/777004.jpg
Is there an alternative 12v bulb I can use?
And then the other question.
My switch gear. Very strange setup, but the headlight bulb scenario, is weird.
Sidelight is not on the switch gear. So I've just got that wired up directly to the stator, so it comes on when I start the engine.
Dipped beam and high beam are through the switch gear.
But the way the switchgear works, is it lives up the body of the bulb, then puts an earth to the two terminals on the bottom, to switch between high and low beam.
Of course, the body of the bulb does not touch anything metal on the bike, as it's fully encased in a plastic holder.
Is this normal?

Just found this:
https://i.ebayimg.com/t/Motorcycle-Headlight-Halogen-3-LUG-Bulb-12v-35-35w-/10/!B,iiYe!!2k~$(KGrHgoH-D8EjlLl)cYWBKr7y5g2tQ~~_12.JPG
So now I just need to know if it's safe to be powering the bulb like I am.
It's the only way it can go. Because the headlight part of the switch shares the same live as the horn button, it's like a common live. And that is how the power comes out.
Unless I can reverse the polarity of it? Which will then reverse the polarity of the horn. But will it not just permenantly earth through the body of it
Edit: Just remembered, I cant reverse the two wires to the switch gear, as the kill switch shares the same earth as the one for the lights.
So by reversing it, the kill switch will then essentially become a live trigger to the engine. Probably not ideal.
Hopefully it's safe to run the bulb backwards. |

The bulb doesn't care. If it were LED then it would be a problem, but essentially all you're doing is passing a current through a thin wire so that it glows, it doesn't matter which way it's flowing. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Nope, voltage has nothing to do with it. It's probably an economy of wiring. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Okay, that's cool that it will work though. Wasnt sure if it'd pop something when switch high and low beam etc.
On another note, I got the indies wired up okay.
Not got the indicators yet, or a relay, but just tested it on a closed circuit, with no relay, and an old set of indicators, and they work on the switch.
Relay and indies are on their way. They are Honda Chaly indies though, so will probably have 6v bulbs in. |

Could wire them in series they might even work on the old flasher. Less effort to change the bulbs though. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I've already ran the loom out Pete, and taped it all / clipped it into place.
Partly why I didnt really want to have to reverse the wiring for the headlight. Because I've spliced into the live and earth feed for other components. By switching them over, I'd need to re-do the whole lot really.
Will see what they are like when they turn up. Should think they will just have 501 bulbs in. Or the usual push/twist ones. |

Any wattage will do so long as the indicators show he same colour both sides, but you might have to fiddle with wattage to get the proper blink rate, or get a solid state flasher like they use for LED's. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
