I was just watching a documentary on BBC2 about the riots and I was reminded how weak the police response was. Where was the army? Why didn't they bonk some heads? Will they do any better next time?

I don't know how other people would have organized a response against violent rioters and gangs but I know what I'd have done.

Pisses me off that they are restrained by policy and the police fat cats refer to police officers as "resources".

Killing someone in cold blood is what started the whole thing off.

I personally think that everyone who looks at a police officer in a funny way should be permanently tagged so we can track their movements and provide an electric shock if their behaviour becomes anti social or threatening. The innocent need have nothing to fear, for only criminals look upon officers of the law with disdain, therefore the public shall be kept safe and secure by this new technology.

In addition, pain guns, water cannon, and rubber bullets should be fully utilised by all police forces nationally. Police must be given the equipment to disperse mobs in seconds to avoid mass hysteria and property damage, and prevent danger to the public. Again, the innocent public need have nothing to fear, since it is a given that they shall not be out in the streets with the mobs.

New powers should be given to the courts to sentence offenders, those that would cause public disorder, threaten the public, and impede the workings of good governance. In order to deter offences, the death penalty shall be imposed, with lesser punishment possible in the form of corporal punishment. Life imprisonment shall come alongside the latter. All existing sentencing guidelines shall be quadrupled; for example, should a driver be caught speeding, his licence shall immediately be revoked and not returned to him for a minimum of ten years, in order that the public are kept safe, the roads remain in a state of good repair, and our police forces are not overstretched and can instead deal with the insidious crimes that are sedition and public disorder.

I should have ended my post with this:

And the post I made in the other thread too, come to think of it. Mr Burns being ominous wasn't obvious enough apparently.

I would have done what they have been doing in Belfast since the 60's. Plastic bullets and water cannons. That would have stopped the nonsense right away.

That was the excuse.
What has the theft from the local pound shop got to do with the death of the local petty crime lord? Unless you believe all the bullshit spouted off.

What was the spark that ignited it then, if it wasn't Mark Duggan's death at the hands of the police?

Do tell.

I would have bussed half of the rioters in to the City of London, namely Threadneedle St and Paternoster Sq. The other half I would have bussed to Canary Wharf then on to Abingdon St and let them riot to their hearts content.

So what has the burning of a family business that gave jobs to local people got to do with the death of the wannabe gangster?

Do tell.

Laughing

I really don’t think you understand how typical it is for riots to descend into wanton violence. As an example (a quite similar one too) the LA riots of ’92 were sparked by the acquittal of the Rodney King murderers. The initial gathering was at the courthouse until the violence and ill feeling erupted into a six day long riot involving thousands over the whole of South Central LA.

All it takes is an initial spark such as a perceived injustice and then previously suppressed feelings of frustration and powerlessness boil over until there is no limit. Subsequent acts cannot be justified but are a natural progression of the breakdown of law and order.

Such is society. A thin veil that shocks us when removed.

The excuse for the riots was the death. Like most western riots, any excuse will do.

Protest and riot are two different things.

Did anyone riot over THIS DEATH?

Thought not.

Erm, nope.

People didn't organise the riot beforehand. It grew organically from the gathering at the police station.

Well if it was organic that's ok then. At least all those people who have had their jobs taken and the losses the business made and the extra insurance we all have to pay can rest in the knowledge it was organic.

What a load of organic shite.

Well at least the dead pensioner is being made organic.

Perhaps you could volunteer your home, car, bike and job as offerings in the next organic uprising, after all it is organic and it is showing it to the man and all the other crap that is spouted out.

How many of the organic rioters used their vote at the last election?
How many have helped as volunteers the community they so hold dear on a weekly basis?
But as long as it is organic, it is alright then.

What the organic fuck.

Filth and scum are to blame. If someone I knew got killed unjustly by the popo, I would not get my scum friends to start a riot then blame the country for my own problems.

People need to control themselves/go to prison/die in a ditch.

I’m not going to follow your lead and descend into Daily Mail rhetoric, rather I’ll attempt to continue to explore why things happened as they did in 2011. Furthermore, seeing as you appear to be mistaken in thinking I condone the rioters behaviour let me address this by saying I do not. I do however travel through South London quite a bit.

As I have previously said, it’s understood that riots often occur due to frustration and social conditions coupled with perceived injustices or inequities.

An undercurrent of ‘bad feeling’ already exists in London towards the Met from the youth, and especially from minorities. That is a fact. The youth don’t trust the government and see the police as working for the state against the people. The disenchanted youth sees the bank bailouts, the banker bonuses from the confines of a sink estate surrounded by terrible inner city schools and constant violence and crime. Welfare is the norm. Dole money is all some have ever known. Prices are rising. Food and energy bills tighten the purse strings further. Bored and ignored kids roam the streets at all hours in gangs of up to 100 strong. 10 year olds see the 17 year olds with the latest trainers and mobile as their idols.

On the day Mark Duggan was killed the family were seemingly kept in the dark. People began to angrily demand answers. A crowd of locals soon formed. People began to see an injustice.

From somewhere came misinformation, lies, mistruths. The crowd saw the MET as the criminals. The MET saw the crowd as an angry mob.

People began the violence and others saw an opportunity. Herein lies the human condition; a braindead populace had the veil of society / law and order lifted yet all some could think to do was burn down an independent business or rob Foot Locker. The selfishness and callousness of the average person was exposed for all to see. They knew not what to do next, so resorted to what they assumed was expected of them. Pack animals without morality.

Most of us know the reasons why it started but what we don't know is why people thought looting and arson was a solution to the problem.

Because kids don't understand causal effects. That's pretty much the only explanation for it.

I'd wager nobody thought it was a solution or even stopped to 'think' at all.

It was a base level reaction.

Fuck base level reaction. No one can blame primal instincts. The reason they started rioting is they were scumbags that wanted a chance to burn down buildings and loot. They needed a reason, any reason.

So what is the issue here? We agree they were wrong. Laughing
