https://www.thebmfshow.co.uk/tickets/#Click here to purchase your tickets for the BMF Tailend Show 2012!

Shows are the cheapest places to get gear and luckily the best one is coming up it will be the cheapest place to get gear. There are a lot of places that do brand name 'seconds' I got a £350 jacket there for £55 a few years back, last time I got a £100 pair of trousers for a tenner. It isn't just be cheap but quality too, the HG stand where selling gloves for £5 a pair and boots for a tenner a few years back. Granted a lot of them are ripped or proper fucked but bargins aren't hard to find. Go there and visit the Hein Gericke (if it is still there!) tent and the Triumph Tent first Thumbs Up

What Riding 'gear' should I get?

Common Sense & Improvisation. You don't NEED to have a complete 'dedicated' motorcycle outfit, & can get a lot more practical protection using common sense & improvisation to dress 'sensibly' from what you got in the wardrobe (or some-one elses). And, apart from lid boots & gloves that you dont really want to have had other peoples appendages in; other stuff can be boght second hand if you are on a tight budget.

But for QUALITY over quantity, and get protection that is worth having, rather than buying to try and cover everything as cheaply as possible, and not putting much protection ANYWHERE as a result.

Good point; Shows can be a great place to find bargains.

Buying factory 'seconds' however... Hmmmmm.... DOES need a little bit of thought that one, when its 'safety gear'.... its not like a pair of jeans where a bit of wobbly stitching isn't going to make much difference to anything but the price.....

If you buy 'Seconds' you HAVE to go over them carefully and know what you are looking for, garments may have been 'rejected' (or returned by a customer) for any number of reasons.

If its the badge been mis-placed, or a seam stitching not totally 'straight, or panel colour mis-match; ie a 'cosmetic' defact, then fair enough....

But end of the day, you are buying SAFETY WEAR and sub-standard safety wear ent going to be as 'safe', say, stitching is incomplete, or a seam hasn't been properly formed, and the 'flaw' it was rejected for is actually a 'weak-point' in the garment.

Better going for end of line 'clearance' stuff, which is often simply 'left over' when they introduce a new product line for a new catalogue, though most common sizes tend to be the first to 'go' so they have fewest of. But big bargains for big & little peopel!

Have you read the advice on my Webby?
Without scouring rallys, shows, or shop clearances, e-bay or second hand, I can put together an 'adequete' and useful riding outfit for about £100 all in, including helmet, buying important bits, brand-new & retail.

Remember Safety-Wear DONT make you safe.... NOT FALLING OFF makes you safe!

Quote:
The 'key' bits of kit; are Helmet, gloves, boots and maybe water-proof over suit. In Tell me more about CBT?, I suggest starting out buying relatively 'Cheap' Hat, gloves boots, and possibly water-proofs and nothing more. And I recommend a VERY cheap Helmet, £20-£30, a cheap pair of trials gloves £10-£15, and 'Army' or 'builders' boots, perhaps £25, and if you cant 'borrow' some old fisherman's or walkers water-proofs, or 'industrial' wet-weather suit for nothing, £10 for something from the Army-Surplus store or £20 for a 'cheap' motorcycle over-suit from Aldi/Liddle/Netto sort of store.

We are spoiled by modern marketing 'selling' a life-style and life-style accessories, and they have been VERY good at making every-one BELIEVE that these are 'Must-Have' items, and selling on your FEARS of safety, has made it even easier.

Bottom line; twenty five years or more ago when I started riding on the road, we didn;t HAVE such luxuaries in all the shops, and what there was, we could seldom afford.

We started out with a cheap hat, and a pair of gloves, and made do for everything else.

My first water-proofs were a pair of hiking over-trousers three sizes too big! I was later given an industrial chemical suit, which was five sizes too big and made me look like a novelty hot air balloon when it billowed.... but kept me dry!

We wore thick fishermands jumpers under old army surplus 'fatigues', in place of Belstaff waxed cottons, for padding and material to wear away.... and we wore old builders boots, Army boots or Doc-Martins where we couldn't afford 'Derri-Boots'...

And we saved up and bought 'decent' kit as we went.

At some point we'd probably get a second hand leather jacket; then maybe we'd get some money for a birthday and use it to buy some boots, or a waxed cotton jacket.

Buying one bit at a time, and buying on quality, putting real protection where we could afford it, we often bough 'life-time' gear, and many of us old timers still have, and many still use, stuff we bought quarter of a century ago, and its STILL providing good service and offering real protection.

A lot of modern stuff, is made down to a price, especially in the budget market, and selling quantity over quality, a lot of it wont last more than a season or two, and it doesn't offer the protection you would expect or hope for.

Value For Money, if you DONT have the dosh to go out and get EVERYTHING in one go, and buy stuff worth having.....

DONT wast your money....

Get the basics, and improvise the rest, use your common sense, and some old fasioned wisdom, to get as much 'useful' protection, and practicality and SAVE your money to spend strategically AS and when you can afford to get 'better' kit, a bit at a time.

Usually it's marked on the label, the flap between to the 2 zips in my jacket is wonkey, bearly noticable. I did however buy a mechanics style shirt from Triumph that I though was fine, turned out the big 'Triumph' Embroidered on the back was upside down Laughing

Lidl and Aldi periodically do bike gear in their special offers.

Much cheapness.

Helmet aside, any trad style junk shops round your way (used to go by such names as old curiousity shop etc) There's one round here that's great for 2nd hand leathers. Surprising what you can find in junk shops!

I just bought all my gear!

£75 for some bullson boots (Hein Ger)
£80 AGU face protecting device
£40 Gloves - generic
£80 Legs - buffalo
£80 Jacket - RST

£350ish in total, more than I wanted to spend but I wasn't willing to sacrifice quality for limbs ^^ I'm sure I could have easily spent more, bargain hunting has left me a little bit mismatched, but I wouldn't buy from ebay. Prefer to try things on.

Wow thanks everybody, i found a helmet for about £50 and has a 4 star sharp rating but now i was more worried about the leather or textiles side of things... Where i live is crap for weather, one day could be as wet as a frogs finger and the next as hot as a ginger (north west england if it helps)... I wouldnt want to buy leathers and then be sweating like a pig for weeks on end... Neutral

There are a lot of considerations where to buy motorcycle accessories. I am hesitate to try purchasing via online because it may not fit to what exactly I am looking for when it arrives.

But my friend encourages me to try it ones because the one that I am looking for is not available in our geographical area. I was in Holland that time when we ordered that in Jafrum store, and it arrives after two- weeks.

I purchased some of my accessories in ebay and I always check the site. You can also try to check their jacket here : https://www.jafrum.com/Motorcycle-Jackets/Mens-Leather-Motorcycle-Jackets/MJ703 if you want to purchas one. Its top notch. Mr. Green

I think they can't beat the price from that store. Razz

i love ebay... but dont buy ebay gear... or at least straight away...

go in a shop and try some stuff on. find what you like, get the details, etc (name, make model..) then search ebay for it...

if its cheaper, ebay it, if not... shop buy it...

where in the country are you?

west midlands motorcycle centre in brierly hill is really good and cheap.

boots from about 30 quid... gloves from a tenner (well some were like a fiver, and you could get odd gloves etc (one red, one blue etc)

i got my helmet, (box lid) jacket, boots and gloves for under 200...
my trousers ATM are a pair of waterproof overtrousers (not armoured but insulated) what my friend gave me since he passed his car test and sold his bike... which i wear heavy jeans underneath... the prices are really cheap, but i even asked for a discount since i was spending so much... instead of my gloves being £10 i got em for a fiver... (so fiver off... despite my gear having an RRP of about 500 quid... Razz)

apparantly Tesco sells helmets for about £20 quid... weather i would buy one is debatable... but for an "emergency replacement"...

but like tef said...

you can improvise a lot of gear...

on my scooter, my first pair of gloves was a pair of leather work gloves, under a pair of wooly gloves, under a pair of thinsulate gloves (three pairs of gloves at once) was bloody lovely on the cold days... and sometimes i went down to either 1 or two layers...

ive seen some kids riding around town with £land work gloves on... - oviously something is better than nothing! but for a litter extra, go for the better one...

my box lid is a 4 star sharp rating... but it cost like £50... at 40-50mph it'll do me... but once i get a bigger bike... = new helmet time...

also: GET EAR PLUGS... 50p on ebay... but on my scooter, the wind noise made me get a sort of peripherral hearing loss... on longer journeys... and even on my 125, on a longer journey with ear plugs i still get a ringing./humming noise when i get off the bike...

also, get a motorcycle balaclava
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Balaclava-winter-warm-cotton-motorcycle-under-helmet-balaclava-mask-BLACK-/160874996986?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2574e5a4fa

they sel for about 2 quid including postage on ebay (not the example above), but will stop lots of wind getting at your neck/chin and help reduce fogging of your visor... - i got my first one which was a hikers neckwarmer - and managed to find it again, but alas, i find it too "tight" around my neck now (im a little fatter now)

----

ALSO, do not forget to factor in some good chains for your bike / and disc locks

they will help DETER theives, (but 9/10 wont stop them if they really want your bike)

make them REALLY VISIBLE... SO BRIGHT YELLOW DISC LOCK / BRIGHT GREEN CHAINS ETC

ive got cheap fiver ebay disclocks that i bought in black, but sprayed yellow (ebay yellow ones wereabout nine quid?) - paint = £1... they arent there to stop the bike being stolen, again its a "its not worth my trouble" thing...

i then have a oxford bike lock that goes over my bike, through two pillion pegs and back wheel... and if near a post, round the post... and a chain that goes round the wheels. to post or W/E...
(a bright red cheap £1 bike lock)...

again, visible security.... doesnt need to cost a lot... just make them have a game to get it off...

also, perhaps something like this bike alarm...:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorbike-Motorcycle-Alarm-Immobiliser-Remote-Start-/400314969642?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item5d34a1ae2a

for a DIY fitment... at about 20 quid... its worth fitting IMO.

so: i have on my bike:
2 x £5 disc locks = £10.
can spray paint = £1 < visibility of locks
oxford bike lock (had already from previous bike but was about £20 4 years ago)
£land bike lock £1
total £22...

for £22 i feel safer than just using the steering lock...

at home I either put the bike in the back garden (declared garaged) but cant be arsed to open the shed) or park it behind my car, chained to caravan. with locks on...

remember: if somebody want the bike, they will pick it up, and throw it in a van... always best to chain it to a fixed object... so they have to work on the locks on the street...
