Just wondering cos I've bought some cones and am going to set them up in a local car park each Sunday morning. I've got the dimensions and everything and have no problem setting it up, but I only ever tend to see Clockwise set ups when I look onYoutube.

Have many people been tested anticlockwise on the day?

i had anti-clockwise. I also hit the cone on my avoidance, but passed! cone wasn't displaced but I felt an almighty whack on my foot. Didn't like the speed exercises as you tend to go too fast to ensure the minimum won't be surprised if DVLA removes that stupid part before someone gets seriously hurt.

I've gotta be honest, that hazard avoidance looks pretty severe on the official guide map....(11)

https://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j273/spenspuma/2012-08-22_10-10-47.png

I certainly wouldn't fancy doing that at 30+mph in the wet!!...firstly trying not to clip the yellow cone before swerving out and then the blue cones are angle inwards so you've gotta sharply swerve back in!

I'd go as far as saying it looks downright dangerous.

I believe both I did were anti-clockwise, I know for definate the 2nd one was anyway.

However I do remember the person who was taking theirs before my 2nd attempt was doing it clockwise..

there is absolutely nothing wrong with the hazard avoidance swerve, it looks severe on paper but when you do it you'll realise it's nothing more than a slight push on the right hand bar then one on the left and your through it, you will most likely do harder movements at higher speed without thinking about it either before the test if you currently have a 125 or most definitely after your test either from normal riding or attempting to ride quickly on twisty roads, the only reason it is an issue is people build it up in their heads into this massive obstacle, frankly if you can't do it you shouldn't be riding, it's pretty much the exact same move you do to allow a cyclist more space when overtaking them

+1 thomp1983.

The trick with the swerve is to position yourself nearer to the speed trap cones nearest the centre of the circuit to get the best line, and dump the throttle the instant you clear the speed trap.

When you do it for real it's a very fluid motion and not difficult.

Don't worry about the weather, it's really not a severe swerve and the test circuit tarmac is the stickiest you'll ever ride on.

Mine was anticlockwise.

It's nothing like that big a swerve on the actual course. Rest assured, once you've done it, you'll be wondering what all the fuss was about.

Yes, a (very) few people bin it, but I'd seriously question whether they'd be safe on the road in the first place. Our training and test regime is bass ackwards in that regard.

I hope you've got it booked up, you're far better just doing it than practising for it.

I had practised mine clockwise and I got an anti-clockwise course!
It was fine though (apart from a stupid cockup on the first part by me!!).
The swerve was simple. I did it at 53 or 55 and it was just like a gentle drift to the side and back again. Nothing to worry about.

I did my hazard avoidance in the bucketing down rain and didn't come off once! My instructor told me the bike wasn't going in a straight line when I had come out of the swerve and slowing to the line though...

The distance between the speed trap and avoidance cones is sooooo huge! it's like dodging a manhole cover, practise doing that!

My top tip for this is buy yourself some coloured chalk. Once you measure a point mark it with the chalk then put your cone on top. As long as it doesn't chuck it down with rain you can go back next week and just place your cones on the marks.

FYI: These links contain my Amazon UK affiliate code:

Cones and Chalk Obviously you can use weighted coke cans or something. The cones seem to cope with being run over... err.. someone told me that but.. errrm... ok... you know a friend or something.

Can someone tell me if they lengthen the distance for the E-stop if it is raining? They should but I bet they don't.

There isn't a set distance you should stop. You have to bring it to a quick controlled stop, it's judged by their opinion. so in the wet they do not expect you to stop on a 2pence piece just be more careful not to lock the rear up and bring her to a nice stop. DO NOT GRAB the brakes or you just will come down

So why do they ask you to stop within the coned box? If you go through it, I thought it is a fail?

Good idea about the chalk. Although I won't be laying out the full course in one go. Gonna practice bit by bit.

If anyone in south Derbyshire fancies a practice on Sunday mornings on my makeshift course you're more than welcome to join me lol

Thats the controlled stop. On the emergency stop you go through (I think) the red and yellow cones then the examiner puts his hand up and you have to bring the bike to a stop as quickly and safely as you can. Make sure to use both the front and rear brake, a friend of mine failed because he didn't use the rear brake at all.

On the controlled stop you just have to stop with your front wheel in the box. There isn't even a minimum speed. Not hard at all.

On the avoidance swerve you have to stop with any part of your bike in between the two blue cones. Again, unless your an absolute mong, this is really easy.

If you stop past the blue cones then they will deem that as not stopping in time. Considering they initiate the stop just past the 2 red cones after the speed trap, you have 31 metres till you hit the blue coned area. If you can't stop at 30mph withing 31 metres then they quite rightly should be failing people who can't.

Also remember to always (ALWAYS) check both shoulders before moving off, no matter where you are. Even on the manual handling exercises you should be checking both shoulders before wheeling the bike to "watch for pedestrians and other vehicles".

Treat it like the public highway and be alert at all times. Don't hit a cone and unless your either really nervous or a complete idiot you shouldn't have any trouble.

Actually, the stopping distance for 30mph is 23 metres in the dry...if like they say, you double it in the wet then that's 46 metres.....but you only have 31 metres in which to stop before the blue cones? Sad

Stopping distances are a load of bullshit. There are way too many factors to give a number that covers all vehicles.

You can easily stop before the cones on the emergency stop in the wet. I did so anybody can.
The controlled stop has been explained.
Then after the hazard avoidance you just have to be anywhere inbetween two cones.

Don't overthink it. Get on a carpark a see how good your brakes are, you might be surprised

Both times I did the Mod 1, it was clockwise, although I had run the course in practice both directions. I'd felt happier anti-clockwise, funnily enough. Failed the first one on the slalom/8 with a foot dab, but nailed all speed ones each time.
For anyone sweating on the hazard avoidance - nip along to the test centre and watch some Mod 1's in progress. You'll be amazed how simple it is when you watch someone do it for real. Like someone else posted - if you can't do the hazard avoidance, then you shouldn't be riding a motorbike: it's why its in the test.
Good Luck.

Didn't use, or didn't put his foot on the brake?

The nod-and-wink advice (that I agree with) is to put your foot on it, but don't actually use it unless absolutely necessary under the conditions, since it's easy to lock it up and you're very likely to fail on that unless you rescue it like a boss.

All that said, I did use both brakes myself. Very Happy
