Hello!

I am new to this forum and this is like my second post but here goes...

I have been riding a CPI Sprint 125 for about three months now, and whenever I fill her up with unleaded, I ponder as to whether I could be using premium unleaded.

would premium fuel have any effect on a 125? Confused

In short, regular 95 ron is fine in about 95% of bikes IMO. The ones that aren't going to be fine are ones that aren't mapped for 95, and are mapped for super unleaded.

A 125 is more than likely going to run absolutely fine on 95 and you're not going to notice any real difference on the super as it's not mapped for it. Altering the map with some more advance to make use of the extra octane would see a small benefit, but otherwise just stick to standard cheap 95.

My 125 has a MPG of 80ish.
I'm not gonna spend HUGE amounts more if i buy premium, so i do.

I figure, i dont have to buy it all the time, it goes a long way and it must help you bike a little better then normal. So i pay the extra 70p xD

Umm, no.

Some people say their engine runs cleaner, feels more responsive etc - others say it makes no odds.

After years of driving / riding I can tell the difference between certain fuels, ie cheapy Morrisons diesel makes my hearse run rough as a badgers asscrack - but sticking BP's Superfabiouso Diesel in it makes as near as dammit no odds whatsoever.

On more performance orientated stuff where the mapping is on a bit of a knife edge, ie mapped more for power than safety, then getting the right petrol in it is important as the octane helps reduce detonation, and therefore stops the engine eating itself under load. So if you map for Shell Optimax, then you'll get more power as you can take more liberties with the ignition advance in the map, but that's the minimum octane you can use afterwards otherwise you risk engine lunchage.

Iam at altitude here so can get by with lower octane. 95 here is super. 93 is regular. My bike is mapped as a KTM LC8 R. That is the higher perfomance mapping. The normal LC8 adv is mapped for lower performance. That means I must use 95. I can use 93, but not at the coast

It won't help at all, hence your appalling mpg.

Depends what you are hoping for.

If it is a fuel which only has a higher octane rating then almost certainly no positive benefit.

However there are various different claims for various different premium fuels and some of those might be of benefit. Some do claim to give more power (although by default a higher octane fuel likely has a lower energy content), some claim better detergent qualities to keep the fuel system cleaner.

If you want a bit more info on octane ratings then this thread might be of interest.

All the best

Keith

I always used to put £30 of 98RON in my car tank every month an then use the normal 95RON all the rest of the time, i was told that it helps clear the fuel lines/injectors etc....

In a bike i would have thought it would do the same??

I dont think it is the fuel so much that will give you more power. the engine is mapped for more power and needs the higher octane to prevent pinging (pre mature ignition).

Tried using 'premium' unleaded with my old 125 for a while, didn't notice any difference. Went back to the standard unleaded with a shot of Redex. Thumbs Up

Only difference is the octane rating. 'Premium' is a misleading term. More expensive brands of petrol may do a better job than the cheaper ones, though I doubt it, even if they did I doubt you'd notice the difference.

It will make absolutely no difference. It is the octane rating which is related to the compression of your engine.

Higher octane fuels are designed for high performance tuned engines. You can get 100RON at some racetracks.

It is a total waste of money. It does not clear out fuel lines or injectors. It is there for people who run specially tuned engines / people who don't know what it is and want to pay more for their petrol.

Based on that using regular petrol with an occasional dash of Redex or other cleaners/conditioners (e.g. Putoline's stuff) would amount to the same thing and probably work out cheaper in the long run.

Have run about 4 tanks worth of Redex through mine recently. Idle seems to have improved but obviously without a strip down can't comment on cleaning the internals.

I liken to the word "Redex" to the word "Placebo"

The guy who invented that red liquid must be laughing all the way to the bank. Sure, someone somewhere may benefit from it but I find it hard to believe it does anything in 99% of engines.

The CPI Sprint is a nice looking 125 machine, with a hint of 1960s BSA cafe racer about it. The bike is a Taiwanese design license built in China as far as I know and shares some components with a number of other Chinese/Taiwanese bikes.
The Engine is a CG-derived pushrod unit fed through the usual basic chinky carburetor. Fueling this bike with premium super-unleaded would be a waste of time IMO as the engine/carb is designed for the global-standard 95 octane fuel.
Interesting to note that CPI are offering 3 year warranties on new bikes. Less impressed with the spares backup though - a google search isn't showing many avenues of supply for parts Sad

As mentioned, the octane rating has nothing to do with that at all. However something like Shell V Power may have a better additive package as well as a higher octane rating but the 2 are not directly related.

If it is a half decent fuel system cleaner then yes.

Suspect it is designed to run on stuff with a rather lower octane rating than normal UK 95 RON premium unleaded (UK basic 95 RON is premium unleaded, just normal unleaded isn't sold in the UK).

All the best

I would agree with that, but i dont know, neither do you. Redex is about a quid on sale at asda once a year, i have a bottle and use it about three times a year ...

My point is i use it the odd time at 33 p a throw, your point is not backed up by anything but what you've heard ...

Prove that redex has no benefits or STFU.

You'd say the vpower etc i use is just placebo, but i've tested many a comparison, and the bike DOES run better on it.

Prove that redex does anything...

Feel free to use V power and redex all you want. IMO it is pointless. No point arguing over it.

Conversely could someone, anyone in the world please prove scientifically that Redex does have any benefits.

I used it regularly for a couple of years in my Landrover, even did the fabled Redex de-coke once. Carb remained as gummed up as ever and the head still coked to the point where the engine ran-on when switched off.
