Well, Shakespeare invented an obscene amount of words, including 'pedant', is what I is saying, blood.

What annoys me more are people like me niece (who is only one year younger than me) that I know full well had near as damn it the EXACT same education and upbringing as me, and KNOW how to spell, but for some reason choose not to.

What gets to me are thsoe who are on the radio/tv who can't pronounce words correctly, put F where a TH should be and the like.

My point is, I went to school with her, I've seen her schoolwork, I've written to and received letters from her when she moved down South when we were kids - I KNOW she can spell, unless you immediately forget how to once you reach a certain age down south... i dunno Wink

There are definitely people out there that know how to spell but choose not to, thinking they look, i dunno, cool or something. I'm not saying everyone who goes to the same school has the same level of English, I'm just saying that I know what my nieces level is.

Spelling is practice, stop reading as much or typing and all of a sudden you are wondering how to spell words that you wouldn't have had second thoughts about once.
I have always been crap with regards to spelling, just one of those things, I remember getting a good hiding for spelling Guitar as Cuitar, so I stopped writting stuff, if I didn't write, I wouldn't spell things incorrectly.
Like cooking, I'm a fair cook, but I forgot how to boil an egg. Practice is the issue.

The internet is great in that regard as it really helps people keep their spelling and grammar levels up. Mine for example, is far better than it was at school! That said, I study a lot of technical literature, so I'm probably not a good example of the average forum member.

I try to take pride in my spelling and grammar.

However I have been caught out messing up my of's and have's on a tired day.

Yeah I guess there are people who fall into that category, but there are also people who spell things in "txt spk" because they are ashamed to spell correctly for fear of looking like, um, i dunno, educated to their thicko mates... I've seen it happen.

I had the misfortune to be subjected to Radio 1 some weeks ago, and they had a popular youth beat combo entertainer guesting[*].

His speech started off along the lines of "Nuff reffpect to mah massive homies possy we'ze keepin' in realz innit wazzup" but within a few minutes had reverted to "Oh, yah, yah, and then I met Jeremy and Alasdair and during the hols we went skiing in Courchevel and decided it would be a wizard wheeze to start a band. Uh... innit." Rolling Eyes

What I find particularly funny is when people who did'nt get the results they were expecting blame it on the school.

I saw numerous facebook status's in which I needed to hold myself back!

E.g So I took 10 GCSE's and got 2, Carson High is shit...

Laughing

My school was a fucking shit hole, I figured that closer to my GCSE's I was learning more at home than I was going in, so I did just that.. just started going home and revising..

Passed all 11 bitches!

And I have myself to thank for that, not the school!

Yeah I have a friend who is a youth worker who comes across kids like that all the time. "You don't know what it's like at that school man, it's shit, you probably went to some posh school where they taught you proper"

My mate: "Nope, I went to the same school as you"

He also gets the ones into drugs saying he knows nothing about what it's like. His answer is "been there, done that, bought the t-shirt" - he knows better than any of em what it's like, but he's managed to get out of it and hopes to help others that are in the same situation he was 5 years ago. They seem to respect him a bit more once they know that. Not all of em, but you can't win em all eh.

My spelling and grammar has become far worse since:

a) Using Google Chrome with an American dictionary for ages
b) Using Google Chrome with a painfully incomplete dictionary
c) Using the internet in general
d) Reading dribble written on the internet rather than printed material
e) Reading more American written dribble on the internet than UK English
f) Using software that doesn't even have a GB English option, only US
g) I stopped reading actual books
h) I just right-click to correct spellings rather than looking to see what I got wrong and learning from it

I often find now that I'm struggling to spell words that I would have had no troubles with beforehand. Sometimes to the extent that I'm so unsure of how to spell a word that I either Google it or rephrase my sentence.

I mean, "wierd" and "weird". I can't even remember which is correct. I think it's "weird". Firefox seems to have no Auto-correct though and that's been switched to my main browser. Weird.

TL;DR. Technology made me stupid.

^^ This.

Since leaving school, in 1991. I don't think i have written much by hand.

I started a new job last June, whereby we have to keep a written journal of our shift to hand over to the next shift.

Took me about 6 months to remember how to write and spell, you lose the ability that's for sure.

My favourite new word is 'dilemmerize'. Not so keen on 'pornified' though.

People are blaming the government for the worsening grades, but I have been seeing first hand the kind of person that goes into teaching. It is those who have left uni with an OK degree and can't be bothered to apply themselves and find a decent private sector job. So they just fall into an easy trap of completing a PGCE and get sucked in by the sheer amount of holiday on offer.

People will tell me that teachers don't just sit on their arse and do nothing during the summer holidays. My Facebook newsfeed suggests otherwise. The best teachers I had at school were from a different generation who did it because they loved it, the current crop do it because they couldn't be arsed to find anything else.
