well i went to get gogo today, pulled up to the pump and took my lod off, the only station in the whole of plymouth that requires lid removal. any how went in to pay and the woman and the sesk tells me i have to get off the bike before filling up.

what the hell, the only "bikers" i see get off to fill up are the ones riding scoots. the reason for this is the petrol may spring out of the tank and spontaniuosly compust - health and safetly has truely gone mad, i have havent cought fire when filling up in the past ten years - why it going to happen now.

any of you lot come across this madness anywhere else

No, but then I get off the bike when I fill up and take the lid off since I hate wearing one to start off with.

Dunno about your petrol, but I can see the BCF spelling nazis spontaneously combusting tho. Wink

Through various different threads we've established that complaining does nothing to change things. You have to comply or fill up somewhere else.

I always comment in these threads that Morrisons made me remove my lid to fill up, so I always use another station, one that I know always lets me sit astride the bike with my lid on, despite the signs saying not to.

Just make it very long winded.

I've removed my lid and put the bike on its centre stand before to fill up, unsure as to the reason why. It was very funny when the car waiting (2 pumps in a line, I was at the front one and a car was filling up behind me) saw me approaching my bike and then started to come forwards to my spot... only to be greeted by me putting on my helmet, moving the hair out of my eyes, putting on my gloves, knocking it off the centre stand, finding neutral and then starting the engine. The bloke ended up having to leave the forecourt because he didn't wait and was blocking everyone, turn around and join the queue at the petrol station again. Laughing

the only reason i used that station was down to the fact it save a big detour to get fuel, however i will be going elsewhere now - strangely tho it co-op texico and all the other texico stations are fine with lid on sat on the bike.

however its is funny watching car drivre getting impatient. i had one guy waiting to leave, getting ever closer to the bike while i was in paying, i took i nice long time putting my gloves on, reseting the trip counter. he ended up reversing u trying to go between a another set uf pumps where he got promptly stuck and couln't go through where i was as another car had already filled the space

Tempted to post "Not This Shit Again", but seeing as I've never posted in one of the, many, available threads here goes.

What happened to customer service, FFS?

At my, normal, petrol station we have forecourt attendants who fill your vehicle up for you.
If you're in a car, you don't even have to get out, although I do and practice a bit of the lingo. You even get front and back windscreens cleaned!
If you're on a bike, the attendant usually asks if you want to fill it up yourself or let him do it, no removing helmets, no getting off the bike, unless you want to. Oh, and the petrol's cheaper as well! Mr. Green

I get off the bike because i have to get off to pay anyway and it gives me time to stretch me legs. I see no reason to make a fuss about getting off, or removing your lid.

well if you have to get off to go in and pay, then whats the problem?

yeah they dont want you on your bike while filling up because it IS a health risk, no doubt people have dropped them, been sat on a bike and stacked it ect ect,

they're just trying to cover thier asses.

but agian, if you have to get off to pay, why not just get off in the first instance?

You get more fuel in with the bike standing upright rather than leaning on its side.

If I get off the bike I either have to:
- put it on the centre stand
- balance it upright with one hand whilst filling it

Strangely, they don't object to the second one which is far more risky in terms of dropping the bike than sitting astride it.

Sitting astride the bike isn't an easy way to drop the bike once you've got your footing. When I stop, my side stand goes down and my right foot goes on the rear brake. My left foot goes of the floor. My bike gets tipped very slightly over to the left.

To date I've never had even a close experience to dropping the bike.

The only time I've even been concerned about dropping it was using the "balance it upright with one hand whilst filling it" on my 125 which didn't have a centre stand.

I don't think that they're trying to cover their arses as much as they are being power-happy. Whislt my legal knowledge is non-existent, I am pretty sure you would have a hard time making a claim against a petrol station if you dropped your bike whilst you chose to fill it in that manner.

I usually get off to fill up, not for any silly rule but because a: the ground is sometimes slippery (split fuel or sand) and I don't fancy dropping my bike and b: a petrol sniffing incident in the bath many years ago has left me with a deep fear of getting the evil liquid anywhere near my genitals....

Started using my tank bag more now instead of my back pack so have to get off anyway to fill up, need to remove the tank bag. Still fill up faster than most people who turn up at the petrol station.

Exactly. It would be a problem if your sat there filling up and you loose your footing on the floor and the bike goes over and the fuel goes everywhere.

its safer to park the bike down the road from the garage i fill up at . and go fill a can .
there all mentalists they fly into the garage in crappy nissans and start doing doghnuts on the forecourt or handbrake turns into the pumps .
its the same area where all the drivers indicate as they turn rather than before turning .if they bother to indicate at all

I manage to use a tank bag and fill up without getting off the bike?

I just pop the tank bag on the top of the pump whilst sitting down and fill up.

I've even gotten to the point now where not even my pillion gets off the bike whilst I'm filling up/paying.

You don't move your feet whilst filling up though, do you?

So surely if you were going to lose your footing, you would lose it whilst attempting to get off the bike. If you haven't lost it by then, your feet are now stationary so the surface underneath your feet is good and you're not going to lose your footing?

I don't know why people get so worked up about this. You're pouring an incredibly inflamable liquid into a tank sitting on top of a hot engine, overdo it and the whole lot could go up like a bomb, if you're sitting astride the bike you could die from the burns.

Why are people so bothered about this? You get off the bike anyway to pay, and I doubt very much that the extra 1/4 litre of petrol you put into your tank as a result of having the bike bolt upright is going to make a difference.
