I was on my way to work earlier on the Dearne Valley Parkway from Barnsley to Doncaster ish which is a dual carriageway with loads of roundabouts.

Google map link here:
https://goo.gl/maps/5OU9M

I was coming up to a roundabout not terribly slowly and I had just started to lean left as I spotted a car on the roundabout that for some unknown reason I hadn't spotted earlier or it hadn't registered in my brain. So I must have grabbed the front brake and down I went.

The bike slid away from me and I landed hard on my left wrist which still didn't stop the chin bar of my helmet kissing the tarmac. So I slid on my front for a few metres before doing a half roll and ending up sat on my arse in the entrance to the roundabout. The bike had other ideas and carried on sliding into the curb of the island.

The bloke in the car I was trying to avoid stopped and got out immediately to help me along with another car that was behind me somewhere. Lifted the bike up and then thought about trying to move it but it was stuck in gear with the gear lever loose. Couldn't get it into neutral. One of the blokes missus's stopped traffic so we could lift the back end up and push it to the other side of the roundabout and onto the pavement. The blokes then had to go and I obviously thanked them a lot for their help.

Phoned work and told them I wouldn't be coming in and then my brother who came with his trailer.

Damage to bike (everything on LHS):
Side fairing smashed
Screen support severely bent
Mirror gone. It's in lots of little bits on the roundabout where people kept running over it with their cars.
Lots of the screen fairing has broken off and is the same with the mirror along with part of the screen.
Fairing bolt has sheared and is still in there.
Indicator has come loose but I think will go back in easily.
Generator cover destroyed.
Bar end weight scratched a bit.
Suspected twisted forks and maybe damaged brake disc.

I think that is about it but I haven't checked the bike over yet.

Damage to me:
Swollen left wrist that didn't start hurting until a few minutes after I came off. It doesn't hurt at all most of the time but if I twist it a certain way it hurts a fair bit.
Grazed right (dunno how) elbow
Grazed left knee.

Damage to gear:
Couple of fairly deep scratches in the chin bar of my helmet.
Scuffs on the belly area of my leather jacket.
Part of the knee area on the left leg has come apart where the stitching has been pulled out.
Few small scuffs higher up my leg too.
The stitching around the palm of the gloves has just given up and opened leaving my hand bare. Luckily I wasn't going fast enough for my hands to be grated.

Before people start telling me how much of a shit rider I am I would just like to add that I accept full responsibility of my off, it was totally of my doing. It was a combination of poor obs and hamfistedness which made it happen. I will definitely learn from this.

I'd been waiting for a little camera to arrive for the last couple of weeks which came in the post today. I didn't know whether to take it for the ride to work as I didn't know if I would have mounted it right or even if there was enough battery power. I wish I hadn't now as that extra fucking around could have meant this wouldn't have happened. But we've all got 20/20 with hindsight.

sorry to hear that - the main thing is that you're ok

sounds like wrist will be fine but go to the doctor if it does not show signs of improvement in a week or so

shame about the bike as it looked like a good example. if the fairing parts are as rare and expensive as the Thunderace maybe consider one of those chinese fairing kits ? have heard some say cerain kits are quite good.

for the gene cover etc get on ebay to pick up some good secondhand stuff

don't suppose you have fully comp insurance ? (Although in this case it could quite easily end up as a write off due to the price of the fairing)

Good idea about the Chinese fairings, I'll look into it if I don't have a go at repairing them.

I'm TPFT and there's no way I'm claiming. The insurance companies will shaft me for years to come and the damage shouldn't be much more to fix than the excess of my policy anyway.

Shit news to hear also, but its still tidier than most of my bikes Laughing

Shame about the bike, at least your still around to tell the tale and it could have been worse.

at least on one plus the road has sanded some rust off?

I might need to drop mine to do the same...

in seriousness though hope it's not gonna take too much to sort, looks like a fair amount of damage :\

Paddy it's the 4JH model. If it's gonna cost too much/take too long to fix everything I'm considering selling it as parts and buying something else.

And yes it could have been much much worse.

Pat, if it gets fixed then it should be in better condition than it ever has been and hopefully you'll see it then Laughing

I sold my CG to my brother a few months ago and he said he'd sell it back to me if I wanted for less than he paid for it and he's only just used a full tank of petrol in it. However I said I'd rather ride this one as smashed as it is than ride a 125 again for more than a few rides Laughing

Damn, unlucky mate. Shouldn't be horrendously costly to get running, but replacing the fairings will be a bitch I'd have thought Sad
Also, you can't claim as TPFT so don't let your insurance know ever! Thumbs Up

Get the wrist checked out. Madame palm, and her her five friendly daughters will miss the attention.

Other than that - glad you're ok, and your chain is slack.

My what strong hands you must have. Razz
Probably didn't help matters that there's a change in road surface just at the point you had the bike in a lean and grabbed the brake.
If it were wet you'd be sat right infront of that car.

Bloody hell.

Has it got a shitty front tyre on there?

It seems to have given way far too easily for the speed and conditions even if you did give it a hamfisted grab on the front brake.

Dunlop Roadsmarts front and back. It's given way because I think I really snatched at it rather than progressively applying it because I hadn't see the car. I'm pretty sure that if I had quickly but smoothly applied the brake then I would have been fine but it was because I had already started leaning that it just gave way.

Thumbs Up for that, shame eBay uses PayPal instead of karma. Wink

Eh, stuff it, you've still got most of a bike, which is a lot better than having no bike.

Watched the video a few times.

It does look like that car was about to exit the roundabout to go down the opposite dual carriage way. So as an instinctive decision, you may have thought this, and proceeded to enter the roundabout.
Then of-course realized he was coming right round, and grabbed a whole load of front brake.

Shame the bike slid so far!

Hope you're not too injured. A bike can be fixed etc. Thumbs Up
