Just heard the first man to step on the moon has died. Aged 82.

A man who made history.

No Crying or Very sad

His name will live on forever, I think I may be right in saying that he will be the most famous person in history. Celebrities may be famous during their short time in the limelight, but Neil Armstrong made such an imprint with his actions (and his words!) partaking in such a historic act that his name shall live on forever, and he very much deserves such.

I'm genuinely upset about this. The world has lost a really great person. Not only did he make history, but he was also incredibly humble and modest; unlike others who have seized at and exploited their fame, he was merely intent on getting on with his life.

May he rest in peace.

Did he top himself after being stripped of his seven Tour de France wins?

Wink

RIP Neil, a true hero.

That is a shame.

He went back to teaching when he left the space program I believe.

Tribute Bowie wrote it in '69 about Armstrong's space adventure.

First man to walk on the face of another planet world, treated it as no big deal. Top bloke.

There you go, that's his achievement put in proper context, you tiny minded pedant.

The first man to walk on the face of another planet almost certainly hasn't been born yet.

they almost certainly will be people on Mars by 2030 and the people to go will be in there 30's
any younger and they figure the stress of such a long trip will get to them
also training will be 4 - 5 years in the simulators and long exposure to mock ups

as to Neil, my dad got me up in the middle of the night to watch his historic steps
I was only 5 and that had me hooked for ever on space flight
top guy that got very pissed off at all the sceptic's calling him a liar and a fraud

the world lost a genuine hero today not just the USA

yeah I know but the US hunger for war curtailed its space program
but now there are all sorts of national and commercial space company's someone will do it
and I would give it 50 / 50 for nasa to be the first right now

I wonder if he'll fess up about either the moon landing being a hoax or aliens in his will Razz Razz

I don't believe that for a second.

he can't now he's dead
and for all the hoax people out there yes I'm sceptical about most things till I see real proof
but I do know there are things on the moon set up by people and not robotic flights
the laser ranger sites for instance, yes google it, I've still to see a conspiracy theory to explain this

I doubt if we will get there by 2030. Space programs arnt exactly top priority for most countries right now.

I'm not taking anything away from the man and it was a great achievement but it's interesting how much more succesful the US propaganda machine was in making Neil Armstrong's contribution to space exploration more famous than Yuri Gagarin's.

I mean ultimately, putting the first man into space seems more of a pivotal moment in human history (assuming space exploration ever amounts to anything) and yet I suspect far fewer people have even heard of him.

So with the need for 4-5 years on the simulators and 6 months to get there they're going to have to be totally commited and have set a final date by 2024, so that gives 12 years to get the funding together, design and build the next generation of launcher, the craft and the environment for the crew, not least the problem that they'd have to get back! Surely it won't even be contemplated until they've done a sample return mission.
MSL was started back in 2004, so it took 8 years to get to mars. so assuming they want to do a sample return mission before they send people (Pretty fucking good idea!) it'd be 8 years before anyone could consider a manned mission to mars (2020) so 2030 is optemistic and assumes that there is already a pressing need to send men there. In reality the advancements in robotics make a tele-presence more cost effective and risk free.

yes there is more robotics to come
nasa said so even before curiosity landed, Nasa (read USA) want / need to be first there
if not they loose the next step in the space race
the ISS shows how its moved on since the coldwar /70's in the space race
hell Nasa relies on Russia to take its astronauts and cargo up these days

Nasa has no launch vehicle even close to taking on ESA or Russia or even the Indian's or chinese
