My helmet was £30. It's about 6 times heavier then my Uncles who's is £300.

All brands are decent (with the EU standards), but the more expensive will be lighter, have more perks (easier visor clips, internal tinted visor).

my lid was £50.

buy from a store for your first couple of lids. try on a few different ones you like, try different sizes, get a good comfortable fit.

make sure its not to tight across the fore head as this will cause headaches and discomfort leading to you being a hazard.

have you got a jacket?
have you got trousers?
have you got boots?

£150 on your first lid might be a bit....pricey. i think if my current lid much like my bike "only a matter of time before i stupidly drop it"

so i only spent £50 on it so its not a huge waste when i do lol.

Does your head become more valueable the more riding experience you get? Not sure why people have this "I'm not spending that amount on my first helmet" thought, why not? it's for your safety! I bought a Marushin for £90 purely for indoor karting, then bought an AGV S4, again for the same purpose... the comfort difference between the 2 was crazy! And I'd wished I'd went for the AGV right away. The AGv was £165 at the time, and now that I have an Arai that cost me £430 I notcie another massive jump in comfort and fit... No I'm not saying you need to spend £500 to get a good helmet, but go try on different brands/models of all price ranges and see what fits you properly and which feels the best to you

I easily forget i'm wearing a helmet, it's not uncomfortable at all and i get used to the weight.
If i come off at 60, the helmet will do fuck all to stop me breaking all my bones. If i come off at 10-20, then the helmet will help. Even if it is £30.

Most newbies are skint. Lemme ask you, he has £150. Should he spend 150 on a helmet and then ride around without gloves, jacket or trousers?

The best helmet is the one that fits (broadly speaking). Don't discount the sub £100 ones - the protection is mostly the same, the difference is in things like weight, anti-fog, lining, vents etc.

If you can find a cheaper lid that fits, then grand. I'd hit up ebay for the rest of the kit, myself, if you're on a budget.

Not saying that they have to spend £150 on it, i'm merely saying they should go to a shop and try on a range of helmets and see what is best for him. I think looking at getting ALL of that gear for £150 is a rediculous though anyway. And, they mentioned the budget for the helmet, with the possibility of getting gloves... Never said anything about jacket or trousers...

If a £50 helmet can offer the same protection as a £450 helmet, then it's down to the individual if they want to spend the extra £400 on being more comfortable - the whole "how much do you value the contents" argument is wank.

There are many attributes to consider when purchasing a new helmet - even more so if it's the 1st ever lid you will have bought.

A quick look through this may provide you with a little insight.

A £30 crash hat is as likely to protect you in an off as a £400 one. It might even help more, since it'll be a bigger shell with more of the actual keep-you-alive inside it.

It's your head, you have to decide. Pick one that fits and makes you feel all manly. Buy from the shop if they've been even remotely helpful.

it's not really a stupidly low amount to spend.

I mean, my gear cost less and its in no way 'bad' or 'unsafe'

£30 box bx-2 helmet, gets pretty good reviews everywhere, good sharp ratings,
meets the EU standard etc etc

£35 tuzo 'orka' jacket, was about £70 when they first came out, completely
waterproof, warm, comfortable, required armour and padding etc, I've had
jackets costing 5 times the amount that havent been as good..

gloves.. £10 out of the bargain bin at my local, akito mercury mega, toasty
and warm, waterproof, leather, Kevlar palms,.

so that leaves £75 for trousers..

they don't have all the gimmicks, carbon this, ligter that, thumb visor wiper
etc etc, but by no means crap or scraping the bottom of the barrel.

£150 on a lid? I'd never pay that, the lower end of the market is perfectly
fine, every helmet sold meets the EU standard.. just take a look at the sharp,
completely unbiased testing, where some of the biggest names came out worse
than the cheapest of the cheap. this alone tells you what your paying for.

Since you haven't even done your CBT yet...

Buy a helmet that fits properly. A BNIB helmet may feel a bit tight in terms of padding, it'll loosen up with use.

Get any lid you want within your budget. So long as it meets EC2205 standard and has the sticker or label that says so (all helmets sold should, possibly excluding Chinese ebay junk, they'll go into this on the CBT) you're good to go. A pair of cheap biking gloves is nice if you can extend your budget that far at the mo. If you really wish to spend silly money on a lid and/or make sure it meets whatever SHARP rating, then by all means do so. It's not a requirement tho.

Riding school lids and gloves are usually a bit smelly, so having your own is great. Enjoy your CBT and have fun.

I've got 2 helmets. A £30 LS2 and a £40 HJC.

Both have the Gold Racing standard sticker, both fit well and neither is exactly heavy.

I did try a £400 Arai helmet at the shop I bought my gloves from and I can honestly say I couldn't see why it was costing £350+ more than the ones I've already got.

But I don't spend long enough on the bike to talk about long distance comfort...my average trip is 10 minutes! Maybe the more expensive helmets feel nicer on longer trips?

No, they all feel the same. About the only difference you may find is how noisy it is at speed or how well the airflow performs to keep your noggin cool on a hot day. A higher priced lid may have a washable or replaceable lining, pinlock accessories as standard, etc, but by and large a well fitting lid is a well fitting lid.

The Schuberth S1 @ around the £250-£350 mark is "reportedly" the quietest helmet on the market - says who? = The guy who reviewed it, but I'd suggest that like most things, everyone has a different view.

There are other methods that help combat wind noise, one of the best I've found is a full neck curtain, not just the normal chin curtain. As people have suggested , it isn't essentially the mega bucks lid that is going to preserve your noggin more than a cheaper option, I have found the neck curtain to be a great addition, combined with ear plugs noise is considerably less.

Sod the price, buy what's comfy. Better still look around and see what's the best deal. Mine was £65, so quite cheap as far as lids go but it was on sale from £210. Has all the features, 5 point venting, bluetooth compatible, readily available spare lens's.....etc,etc,etc.
