I just watched this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujcjLt6goWo&feature=plcp
Ed Sheeran is alright as musicians go, but Devlin, I see no point in him.
I also note in the clip how he constantly shakes his hands about in a gangsta fashion, what's the need? I'm hoping he's the only one or is there more of these spanners out there? ____________________ Roger wrote: Women don't get damp for clingy puppies. Music right now makes me think that music i thought wasn’t so good in the late 90’s early naughties was actually alright. Even the explosion of all the Indie music shortly after wasn’t so bad after all. Compared to right now, a lot of that was creative.
Rap is the one genre that really is sad today, the image and the clothes are paramount, the fake set up is really getting old now. All of the ‘rapper’s I hear on tracks where they feature over a chart track always have that same tone to them, “it’s all hard work”, “We gotta stay together” “Be strong, ignore the haters”, when you are a rapper with a 4-5 year life span, this is really awful. It’s now a really confused message...back in the 90’s when I was listening to Ice Cube, it was obvious what the message was. Fuck the police, and I don’t blame him. Not only that, beats were inventive and fresh, lyrics were paramount.
The yanks seem to have lost their way in the broad sense and it’s not only ‘rap’, using rehashed UK dub step is strange. When that sound was touching clubs here, being a keen follower of Drum & Bass, I was sat next to several lads testing it out in the studios, it was a producers dream. Technical beats that have to be carefully pieced together to ensure variation, whilst sat at a low BPM. It’s harder to produce than you think and uses techniques and software that were original. I’ve never been a fan to be honest and as the craze died out among friends, it suddenly took off in the US. Now you hear it over all sorts of media. ____________________ Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.

It seems everyone is using computers and electro shit to enhance their voice or make some weird noises. Even the older "used to be good" bands like Linkin Park are at it these days with terrible albums being released.
Rock music, you remember that stuff, where people used real instruments, has once again been pushed out of the charts by these weird bands that rely on (c)rap and dance beats to make music.
As for dubstep.... I dont and hope never to understand how people can listen to that shite. |
Ja, the same jingoistic lovey dovey words, electronic noise which passes as music, and boys sounding like girls. And girls doping a lot of screaming and moaning. The pop music stuff that floods the airwaves of every nation, the plastic noise of plastic society, is just terrible
Older rock music had talent, but tehre were also the 4 chord, chorus over and over wonders.
Go back further and classical music was real talent. The symphony of all the instruments, the timing, the complexity....Timeless. 300 years later it is not 'out of fashion'.
And these modern vocalists with all sorts of electronic enhancement, can you compare them to the old style opera singers? ____________________ 2011 KTM 990 Dakar

Pretty sure my parents thought the trance/hard house I listened to was shit.
Pretty sure their parents thought The Who, The Beetles, David Bowie were shit.
I'd imagine that their parents thought Elvis, Nat King Cole, Hank Williams were "not good"
It follows a long line of "the kids of today listen to shit music, and equally we think the music are parents like is crap too. Tastes change though, 10 years ago if The Who came on the radio I would have switched it off, I'll happily sit and listen to a whole album now
Modern music doesn't interest me much, floppy haired indy bands, x-factor stars, manufactured boy/girl groups and all the rest of it but I wouldn't brand it "crap" just because it's not to my taste. Some of these people do very, very well - Leona Lewis for example. Hard to brand her music crap when she earns 200 times what I do a year from it.

It's entirely subjective. There are only really two types of music, music you like and music you don't. |

Rock music, you remember that stuff, where people used real instruments, has once again been pushed out of the charts by these weird bands that rely on (c)rap and dance beats to make music. |
That's just the progressive nature of popular music. Back when musicians used more 'real instruments' they were often still doing so in new and innovative ways - distortion pedals took electric guitar to a whole new level, heavily syncopated and complex percussion arrangements gave heavy Rock / Metal the energetic sound that was missing in lots of other genres, even the use of a human voice was being explored (shouting, screaming, whispering, as opposed to just singing). And when musicians were being innovative with 'real instruments' in the above ways, the older generation had the mentality of "what the fuck, you're not playing those instruments like REAL INSTRUMENTS, get a hair cut, what's wrong with you, etc".
It isn't cyclical, but those sentiments are always echoed through the years.
The whole thing with computers and 'electro shit' is a different matter. If you ignore art-music movements such as Krautrock (not the coolest name) and early hardware synthesis and sampler development, computers only really became a musical tool after they had been established as a viable recording tool. The switch from analogue recording mediums (tape et al) to digital platforms (HDD recorders) allowed for greater flexibility, stability and sound quality (although even to this day, the issue of analogue vs digital sound quality is subjective and cause for debate).
What this meant for music, aside from the fact that a wider range of the frequency spectrum could now be recorded, was that genres which required less 'real musician-ship' were far more accessible to Joe Public. For instance, when Rap began many many moons ago, a Rap artist had to find a small ensemble (usually a Jazz duo or trio) to perform some 'wallpaper music' while he/she recited poems over the top. With digital 'instruments' (read: computers) the Rap artist of the present need only have a basic knowledge of rhythmic programming, song structure, tonal arrangement and computer literacy. The same applies to other genres of music.
So is it all a good thing? A bad thing? Again, that is subjective too, and to consider that question you have to look further (as is always the case in popular music) to areas like sociology, popular and counter culture, trends, etc. In my opinion however, we need all the dull "(c)rap and dance beats" music to exist, for without it we wouldn't have such aural delights as Supersilent, Kim Cascone, Nine Inch Nails, Mogwai, etc etc etc ____________________ Yamaha XJ600S, Volvo v40. |

Yes but computers can make ANY sound of ANY type, and still current music sounds exactly as it did in the mid to late 90's.
I don't mind innovative electronic music, but it really needs to be truly innovative, not re hashed crap. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade
