Hi, just been looking for my first big bike and spotted a 1998 bandit 600, 17000 miles on it, looks tidy from the photos and free delivery as well. 1290 quid.

Is that a decent price? it's from a dealers, i know i could prob get cheaper from a private seller but as I need to use credit card i need to purchase from a dealer

Decent price for the bike...
From a private seller, I'd say average - you could maybe get a bike of that age and approx mileage for £1k but it would require hunting.
From a dealer? Yes. Very good.

One of my local dealers were selling a 98 SV with 40k for £2k and a '02 SV with 15k for £2.5k, to put it into context.
And you could always haggle.

Sound's a good price if i had the chance to get something like that for that money i would as i am also looking for my first bike Thumbs Up

My Rule of thumb is never buy a bike without looking at it, be sure to do basic checks if your buying one privately, from a dealer you should be pretty safe.

the_quick bought a bandit down to me last week. 2000 model bandit s, looks far nicer with that front end on it.

Think he paid 1200 private.

You'll get a better deal privately.

Also you might be able to get a 99/00 Thundercat for £1000 in good nick with average mileage! Thumbs Up

It does depend what area you're in - in more remote areas of the UK you'll get better prices, I'm in the South East, bikes and more importantly MONEY is everywhere.. So the dealers get away with charging a bomb, nightmare for the student Thumbs Down

See what the dealers will throw in, warranty-wise, any free gear or free servicing etc..

How much would a thundercat cost to insure though? Already checked bandit cost and its cheaper than my 125. Also not seen any thundercats at dealers in my budget.

I would go private but can't get the cash upfront

Ah, so would be a finance type deal on something <£1500. I would recommend saving the cash personally. Otherwise you'll pay silly prices.

My Bandit cost around £180 I think to insure, Thundercat was a bit more but in terms of riding/motorways/handling the cat won.

Sort of, got a card coming with 16 month 0% on purchases, I've half the cash already and hopefully the other half when I sell the tiddler so an easy pay off in theory

Hmm, makes sense I suppose.

Definitely shop round, don't grab the first one in your range.

Made that mistake before and was a little disappointed!

The cat's like 700 quid for me but then again I'm 19, 0 NCB and had my license 3 months.

(Just to add I haven't taken out the policy yet, I'm contemplating waiting for a years no claims!)

You're still paying the dealer premium, so factor that into your 0% calculations. Why not sell the tiddler first and expand your purchasing options?

I would say it was a fair price if you factor in the delivery costs they would normally charge.

Have you asked about Tax/MOT expiry? The ad doesn't mention it which is a worry.

Clean looking bike though Thumbs Up

Have you got somewhere to store it? You can stick it my garage if you want?

I don't know what people have against bandits?

Good bike, pulls well, fairings shield you from the wind, easy to fix etc.

Got mine as Paddy said private for 1200, with 27k miles on the clock.

No rust, no damage (small scratch on one fairing), almost new tyres, new battery and 4 month MOT, only little bad thing is oxidation on engine casing, but I will try to sort that out.

I did not want to buy from dealers as they add own mark up of at least 300 quid. And warranty they give you not always works etc.

If you are bit worry about buying from private person, take a bike mate with you, or just read what to check on the bike, have a test ride.

I think bikers care more for their toys than car drivers. You will know straight away if some cared for the bike. Best if bike is stored in garage for the night/winter

happy hunting

Not sure about the 600s, but the water cooled GSF650SA weighs a quarter of a ton wet. If you like the feeling of solidity, fair enough, but to me that's about 50kg of LOLWTF.

Ste,

Possible alternative??

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201235483055818/sort/default/usedbikes/cc-from/500cc/quicksearch/true/page/1/radius/60/postcode/sr33er?logcode=p

not sure if they accept card though. I'm guessing its a garage so should have card facility.

Better than the bandit Wink [/code]
