So in the "stock and shares" discussion, a figure was stated that 50% of the population has at least £36k in wealth.

I'm taking wealth to be defined as "Cash I have laying about in my account thats not needed for anything, not doing anything, just £36k or more that I have readily available".

This does not include cars you may own, mortgage, shares or investments. This is cold solid hard cash, that you could readily invest in the stock market in the next 5 minutes should you desire.

Derivative regards £10k as small change, I think it is quite a bit of money for someone to just have laying around.

So, the question is, do you, as an individual, have £36k or more in stone hard cash. Simple question which can be answered adequately by the poll.

Do you count physical gold and silver? Precious metals held in a bullionvault / gold money account?

Yep, that's what I said. I did have more than £36k in an account, but I spent it. So I voted No.

I dont know where those stats came from, but here is HMRC's stats for "Liquid Wealth" which i think is close to what you are talking about.

https://cdn.bikechatforums.com/files/31-08-2012_15-36-39.jpg

So 10.9% of people have £30-50K, more people actually have £50-100k in liquid wealth.

I like the stat for men vs women for 5 million and over. Laughing

and also how 0.1% of people own 23% of the country's wealth...

I,ve got a quite a large sum above that amount in my savings account, made up from insurance payouts and saving a chunk of my wages each month, at the age of 25 its quite a descent sum, don't know why l have saved it over the past 5 years as l don't really have any life plans at the moment l just feel the need to save and to live within my means rather than blowing the whole lot on bikes/holidays.

I'd love to have some savings but I have just bought my first house (or rather started repaying a mortgage). Currently I have about £3k to my name which needs to be spent on various mundane things for the house. When all that is taken care of I plan on saving a decent amount per month as having that little if I were to lose my job tomorrow bothers me.

The spirit of the stocks and shares thread was about having spare money to invest somewhere, so that carrys on over to this thread. I'm not aware if you can trade your house on the stock market, but I doubt many would as a form of investment, thus it's more simple to stick to hard cash for the sake of trying to get an idea of what percentage of the forum are wealhty, and what percentage are peasents in Derivatives eyes Razz

I'm 32, have a good job, live in a rented house and have less than £3k to scrape together, including one Oz of gold I have from Australia (which I don't want to sell for 'sentimental' reasons).

I would expect "wealth" to mean what would be left over if you cashed in all your assets and settled your debts. In that case £36k is a pretty easy number to reach - lots of people will have several times that amount tied up in their houses but it's useless because you have to have somewhere to live.

I would describe someone with £2million in property and £10 in their account as wealthy. I wouldn't necessarily describe someone with £36k in their account and no other assets as wealthy.

But this isn't the stocks and shares thread Wink

You asked a simple question ( How wealthy are you ? ) based on the assumption that 50% of people have £36k+ of disposible cash, that assumption has been shown to be wrong.

Anyway, I'm a peasant and have very low savings. Why save it up when you can spend it and enjoy it instead, I might be dead tomorrow ! I've not too long to go on my mortgage, hopefully after that's done we will start to save a bit.

What about people who rent their homes? All of their "assets" probably include maybe a bit of furniture and a car/bike/both, maybe a laptop computer and a mobile phone. Barely 36k.

I had a lot of savings at the beginning of the year, but the mongol rally extortion fiasco blew a large chunk out of them, and now I plan on buying a bike, which will blow out another chunk, and I'll only have a little bit left.

However I'm a student so that may mean I'm better off than most of my demographic...that would give me a nice warm feeling of content superiority Laughing

They're not wealthy then. Renting is a necessity in early life but if you rent all your life you're unlikely to build wealth because bricks and mortar are where most of your wealth ends up. (Enter G to explain that if you live in a box-room in a shared house in Redcar or somewhere you can still save whilst renting - unrealistic if you have dependents)

"Wealth" tied up in property may not be any use to you in life (apart from saving you from having to pay rent) but it's sure as hell considered part of your estate when you croak and they calculate the tax you owe on it.

I wish I had that much liquid cash. Even when I inherited money from my great uncles I never had that much, even if you added them both together.
