Bonjourno,

My bike cover was on the floor this morning, it wasn't windy last night plus its a fancy oxford one with tight elastic around the bottom... have I been visited by some kind of bike fairy?? Am I just paranoid??

Ciao,

I suppose it could of been windy, I was fast asleep so I guess I wouldn't know, but to be windy enough to lift a cover off a bike? Its a medium cover so fits really snug.

Can a cover be blown off, I am wondering if someone had a look saw the ground anchor and flashy alarm LED and decided to leave it, or saw it was only an ER6 and decided to leave it lol

Probably this. The only time my bike cover came off completely, someone had had a go at it.

If I recall correctly this happened to another member not so long ago, few days later the bike had been stolen. May be worth upping your defences.

Makes me so angry, I want to plant mines in the garden!!

I'm gonna get another chain for the back tyre tonight, just in case they have weighed up whats needed for a second attempt, although if that was the plan they would probably have left no trace of the visit?

I could see no visible damage to the ignition or anything.

Ill await "someone tried to steal my bike" thread.

You would think if they were thinking of coming back then they would have replaced the cover, nobody will be keeping an eye out then. Maybe they were going to try and have it but got spooked by someone/something.

I'd have to leave a comedy note on it tonight, something along the lines of "I'm watching you..."

Remember the common criminal is as clueless as a bag of sugar at the same time with a dash of intelligence, why replace it when the owner will think its wind and you could set the "flashy alarm LED" off.

Oh OP I'd get that flashy alarm LED checked at as obviously could do with bit more sensitivity.

What if you got nowhere else to put your bike though? I'm assuming most people who leave bike outside under a cover do so because they have no other option? It might have to stay there, in which case extra security plus a little note for the fun of it seems sensible to me...

EVEN better would be if you could get a camera set up... or a tracking device put on the bike.

Or, it could have just been the cover faeries - the same faeries who knot all your cables up behind your TV dontcha know. Bastards.

The couple of times I have found the cover off my bike both times thieving scrotes had been the cause. Once seen / disturbed by a neighbour returning from shift work, the second time something tried to cut one of the the chains and only managed to cut through the protective cover before giving up.

Try this, a friend got one similar and got some good footage of a ride out a bit back:

Don't over-estimate thieves in general and bike thieves in particular. They're sub-humans, and all they know is: want, take, have.

Taking the cover off got them what they wanted right then (information on the bike and security), but putting it back on wouldn't have given them any immediate reward, so they didn't bother. Anticipating the consequences would require them to see things from your point of view. If their little rat brains were capable of such empathy, they probably wouldn't be nicking bikes.

A camera will do nothing except give you some washed out images of hoodies which will do exactly nothing to get your bike back. Move it or lock it to the centre of the earth with battleship chains.

I got home one morning and found my canvas bike cover on the ground. I wondered whether it was wind or thieves, but when I picked up the cover I found out that my lodger's mate was using it as a sleeping bag. He'd missed the last train back from a night out, walked 15 miles, and he was so pissed & tired he just curled up on my drive wrapped up in the bike cover.

Someone tried to nick my knackered & battered 250 a few months ago. I couldn't believe it. Anyway I bought a big lock and chain and I make sure the the lock is sticking out clearly from beneath the cover. It is all about perception. Make it look like it is bolted to the centre of the earth and they might not even try.

Its chained to a ground anchor. its a good waterproof oxford cover. It now has a new flourecent disc lock and I have managed to hook the flourecent reminder wire on the outside in clear view as warning that things are different to how they were last night so back off low life scum...

I usually leave the bolts down on the gates so if opened they drag and cause noise. But I wasnt the last one in last night Sad

Thanks for the advice anyway guys...

Ah, that's good then. Hopefully the ratbrains saw the ground anchor and decided to just move on to weaker prey. Thumbs Up

I had the wind blow my cover off - it was so windy it snapped belt from the actual cover at one side.
