Brand New Bike Warranty Worry.

Hey guys and girls.

Short time reader (3 months-ish), first time poster.

So to paint a picture:

Im relativly new to riding a motorbike. Got a brand new Kymco Pulsar LX 125 in June for my birthday to use to get to my mums house everyday to get to work. (We work at the same place and she takes me by car the rest of the way to Harrogate from York).

So 5 days a week I do a 6.2 mile round trip on it and every other Saturday do a 41.4 mile round trip. Plus other little trips.

In total (and been very generouse with the milage of the 'little trips') I work it out at about 270 miles a month.

Now for the problem:

Last Saturday I traveled to Harrogate (where I work) in the morning. Everything fine, no problems. Finish work at around 12 and went to my boss' house to give back his keys. Halfway round finding his house the bike begins to 'kangeroo' in a way I would associate with it not having any fuel, however it has half a tank. It couldnt even idle at traffic lights without cutting out and to start it I had to press the ignition switch and open the throttle fully, and then keep reving it so it didnt cut out.

Got it to a motorcycle garage and then got it recovered back to York by the dealer that sold me it.

They have investigated it and say there is a problem with the top of the engine and would need to be stripped. They also said it would more than likely be a warranty job unless I had "ripped up the engine".

This last part now has me worried. I did what the Handbook told me to do and didnt travel over 30mph for the first 300 (I think) km, I havn't since that initial distance rev'd the s**t out of it and i've had no crashes or falls. It had its first service after a month and at point of problem had only done around 900km.

The only "problem" about the bike is that it went into the red revs really easily and I have had a few instances where I have gone into the red zone doing 60mph and not realised. The bike does around 55mph before coming near the red zone.

Being new to bikes I have no idea if I have been doing something that I shouldnt have been doing. I pretty much do everything they taught me in my CBT and im really careful and cautious with it. Im just worried its going to cost me an arm and a leg as we had to take out a loan to get the bike in the first place.

Any opinions / info anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated as, like I said, i'm pretty new to this and 99.9% of people on here probably have more experiance than I.

Don;t worry about it the odd stay into the red won't be noticed by the dealer shouldn't really be an issue either.

there's no way they can know what speed you've done, the bike doesnt have any logging on it.

what it means is more 'dont rag the shit out of it'.

get this on the CTR forum a lot. people buy them and get scared if they 'accidentally' hit VTEC within their 1st 500km when all the manual says is 'avoid full throttle starts' which again is a nice way of saying 'dont rag the shit out it'

progressively accelerating to your max speed isnt going to cause any issues whatsoever.

I really wouldn't worry about it. If they don't fix it under warranty I would be seriously surprised and you would have a VERY good case to take them to court.

You'll get some crap from some members for buying a kymco but to be honest they are some of the better non-jap bikes out there. Hope you're enjoying your bike and welcome to BCF!

To be fair to them I think it was more of a disclaimer than anthing else. (Still doesnt stop me worrying though). They are a good lot down there and really helpful. I thought a tube had come loose so phoned them up and they said to just bring it down and they would have a look.

Turned out to be a drain tube. Felt like a right prat. Should have worked that out been a parts man and all, but they were really good about it and said everyone has to start somewhere. He even took it for a test drive just to make sure everything was ok with it.

This was about a month after getting the bike.

Wait to see what they say before worrying.

Chances are they will sort it and that will be it. If they don't, worry about it then. Even a ragged bike shouldn't ingest it's top end within 600 miles if it has been service.

Sounds like it should be a straight forward warranty jobbie, unless there's some weird clause in there somewhere.

Don't worry about revving it, its a bike they're made to be revved, and most 125's will probably spend 70% of its life in its top rev range.

Going into the "red" isn't a problem, just don't sit at the lights bouncing it off the limiter, you might find yourself on fire.

Red lining is fine if it's only momentary (and under load i.e. whilst actually riding) - it's an area you're not allowed in for sustained periods.
I snapped a pushrod on a 125 once before because of too many revs whilst in top gear, but I was 'drafting' behind a car at the time! (The wind resistance usually kept the revs under control - effectively creating a natural rev limiter, slipstreaming behind the car removed this!)

If they're going to try and stitch you up, they're going to pull the "That's had unreasonable wear and tear, that has" line regardless of what you say or how you actually rode it.

So don't sweat it until it actually happens. If they see you right and do have to rebuild the engine, personally I'd do a mototune break in, especially on a low powered 125 where it's more hamster than horse power. I ran my Chinese branded 125 in gently and I honestly believe I did it no favours by doing so.

You might want to ask exactly what this "top end problem" actually is. If they can't or won't tell you, then why are they doing any work to it?

I doubt the dealer would try to rip you off. They'll get paid, whether it's warranty work or not. Granted, they don't get quite as much for the warranty work, but I doubt it's worth ripping somebody off over.

Yipee! All sorted!

Turned out it was a leaky gasket and dodgy fuel tap. All done under Warranty so feel loads better.

They have had it running and road tested it and they say its running as good as it should be.

Will post one final up date when I actually get it back tomorrow.

We'll never know if they would have tried to pull a fast one if the problem had been more serious of course but like Rodger says, good on 'em and glad your all sorted.

Just an idea, if we are going to name companies like Victory Motorcycles, who mistreat their customers, why not use our powers for good as well?

If you get great customer service in relation to your bike, name the company who provided it, its only fair.
