'sup...

I've just got myself an unlocked handset, a samsung galaxy "y". Currently I'm on the orange base package (25p/min all calls all networks) and to be fair, I know I'm getting spanked on it. I hear a lot about giffgaff being the cheapest and seen a few threads dotted around, so I know there's a few on here using giffgaff. Are they still the best out there? I'm tempted by the 10quid goodybag as I use around 150-200 minutes a month and the unlimited internet will come in handy for web based apps (paddypower, ladbrokes etc). I don't send texts hardly (about 5 a month if I'm really going for some, yes I'm old), so that doesn't bother me, but I suppose if they're there and they're free, I might end up sending a few more.

Another question, the galaxy "y" is android, so I presume it comes with a web browser... Would I be able to view BCF and reply etc? Also, is there any kind of "facetime" type app that I can install on my macbook, that will work with video calling the samsung? What's the craic with the GPS gubbins on it? Can I use it as a satnav? or is it just for geotagging photos so that everyone can see exactly where I am every goddam minute of the day?

I'll also be signing up my missus to giffgaff, although she hardly ever uses her phone, so am I right in thinking that she can just top up and use the credit per call, rather than using a goodybag?

Cheers all

Girlfriend recently got a Galaxy Y with Tesco for a tenner a month. 2/300 mins, unlimited texts and 500mb internet, with the phone included.

Certain you could view BCF and reply, and I'll see if there's any of this facetime stuff on it, but I don't think it has a camera on the front (I assume that you need this to use that app) so I doubt you could do that. I'll have a look at the GPS thing too.

I use it on a smartphone for tracking and the odd message but a few friends and family use it.
For free texts and free giffgaff to giffgaff calls it's excellent value.

I don't see any reason why you won't be able to browse as per a pc with the tab. My other half uses a tab instead of her laptop these days.

Giff gaff sounds good, I have mine on Virgin mainly because the only remotely usable network here is orange and Virgin now works on that as well as tmobile.

If you're already with virginmedia they have an 8p PAYG tariff but data is 50p/day and only 25mb each day, however if you go over that e.g. using sat-nav one day, you get unlimited for £2.this actually works fine for me as a very light user due to almost no signal round local area.

Virgin credit doesn't expire at the end of the month either so of £10 put on mine in May at least £5 is still on it.

The great thing with smartphones is that you can do so much stuff on home wifi for no charge.
Plus there are so many useful/fun/interesting apps these days.

GiffGaff is cheap and cheerful, and is one of the few networks that don't charge for 0800 numbers!

The signal is usually good (being on the O2 network), but I found their 3G performance to be on the slow side.

If you've got a handset, a tenner a month for 700 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internets is hard to turn down.

Google maps now has a full on sat-nav for android. The speech is a bit odd, but it is free.

Yeah but is there a limit on when that top up runs out?

I put a tenner on mine ages ago (back in July, I think), thinking to use it very occasionally, but I haven't used it at all, and now the phone won't work at all.

(could just be an old phone) Laughing
And yes, I did charge it up Laughing

As long as the phone sends or receives a text or phonecall every 6 months then the sim will stay active. It is however, possible to top up an 'expired' sim :/
Can you log into your giffgaff account and see if your number's still showing on your dashboard?

Can confirm that you can use the GPS thing on it as a satnav. There is a 'Navigation' application that you use.
