So, who wants a Pi case?

Having had a rather nice successful print of a case for Robby, and having cleared it with Korn, I'm now selling Raspberry Pi cases to BCF members, if you guys want them.

They're not without a few minor defects, but in the famous words of Edward Norton in fight club, it just shows that they're manufactured by the indigenous peoples of wherever.

Either way, I'm intending to modify and develop the case, so it's got better support for the SD card, and possibly a holster for more cards, if it's a popular design desicion.

At the moment, I've got enough filament for one or two clear ones, and a lot of yellow ones, although the yellow filament's prone to bubbling a bit. I'll be getting some more filament in the week - specifically, white and black reels. I'll need to recalibrate the printer a bit for the new filament, so there may be a short lead time on the prints.

The price will be a tenner per case, and they'll be printed on a first come first serve basis - there's currently one person in the queue, so he's getting sorted first.

Just an idea... could it be extended to encompass a mains PSU so that the whole unit hangs out of a plug socket? Or you could even build in mounting points that conform to the VESA spacing on the backs of TV's/monitors?

Incidentally, I'd just like to let you guys know that the basic design for this isn't my work - it's from a website called Thingiverse, and it's object number 24721. I'll be adapting it over time, and will put up the modified design on there, too. If there's anything on there that anyone particularly wants printed, give me a shout.

As a rule, most things can be printed, provided they can fit into a 14*14cm square - that means that the longest tip-to-tip measurement of a thin object can be around 19cm, provided it's got a sharp taper.

although considering the coverage the Pi's have been getting its quite amazing to see "whats a pi case" or "whats a pi" questions around.

raspberry Pi = £39 (rounded up and including postage) credit card sized computer that runs off a SD card loaded with a linux image. using a ARM6 (?) processor and capable of putting out 1080p natively along with analogue video output.

you need to buy a keyboard, mouse, sd card, power supply (5v 1amp apple charger with usb to micro usb cable is perfect) and the usual other bits. hdmi cable and a POWERED usb hub. DO NOT USE A UNPOWERED ONE.

or if you fancy being ripped off. go to maplin and buy a complete kit for £70 lol

might be worth designing a case to hold a 2.5" hdd, clips a usb hub and slot into and a couple of lugs with holes so that you can mount it to your VESA fittings but without it interfearing with the mount so if you happen to use a wall mount or monitor arm mount it can still be used

just some ideas to throw around.

Two words of warning; One: when gluing the case halves together, you'll need to hold it under a little tension, and Two: the plastic is fairly brittle, so when I say 'a little tension', I mean a little tension. Rubber bands will suffice for this - anything more than that is overkill.

There are a couple of parts which are only one perimeter thick, so don't be expecting this to be as tough as your average flight cases. However, it does do the job of insulating a Pi from the various dangers of one's desk admirably.

You may encounter what look like hairs on some of the prints; don't worry, I've not given it the colin1 cleaning regimen, it's a feature of the plastic filament - it's not top-quality stuff, so is a bit prone to stranding like that.

When closing the cases together, I recommend either an all-purpose adhesive like this stuff, or you can weld it together with a soldering iron. In my experience, gluing it together's easier, and you tend to get a better finish.

One final thing - I did find that these printed cases tend to highlight the sometimes poor build quality of the raspberry pi - in the case of mine, the RCA socket is wonky, meaning that I'll have to re-solder it for any case to fit properly.
